Neighbours Dog

I'v name changed for this. But am at the end of my tether and need advice. I recently bought a flat, its lovely and I'm really happy with it, but my neighbour has an absolutely huge dog and I'm allergic. She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway and I find it quite intimidating and it is making me sneeze.

I wasnt told about the dog when I bought the flat, and it doesnt make any noise. Apparently she has permission for it and permission can only be removed if it is making a noise or fouling - but not for any other nuisance. What can I do?

This is one of those windups someone bored in the commute has done isn't it Confused

Has to be .

I need help - neighbours have a well behaved dog they have permission for and they walk it and look after it but hey - I'm allergic to dogs so they shouldn't have one . Hahahahahahahaha.

I call windup .

Right, I can understand your annoyance, as you bought a flat which doesn’t turn out to be what you expected..
Look at this realistically - The pro’s and con’s - problem solve, and decide when its been enough. If you reach that line I would look for another flat?

Not ideal, and moving is stressful, but staying somewhere you know you are going to be anxious is surely even more damaging ?

mountainsunsets · 25/08/2022 15:37

I say she insists on taking it out, because the hallway is the only route, but its so many times, back and forth. if it was only once, that would be one thing- but its in and out, in and out all the time. it just makes me so anxious about meeting it always trekking back in and out.

The dog needs to go to the toilet! What else do you expect her to do, train it use a human loo? In all honesty, three trips a day to go out for a walk/use the toilet is very few as it is - my own dog goes out a hell of a lot more often than that Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 25/08/2022 15:37

The problem though is not the dog, it's your anxiety

Focus on that - the dog is there to stay, fix your anxiety about animals.

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 25/08/2022 15:38

This is either the nadir of Mumsnet, or possibly the zenith, I can’t decide.

airforsharon · 25/08/2022 15:40

Christ OP, entitled, intolerant nitwits like you are the reason i often prefer dogs to people 😄

The dog sounds beautifully behaved, the owner excellent if the dog is quiet & exercised regularly. You otoh sound a nightmare.

BlueReindeer · 25/08/2022 15:40

People here are dicks. Maybe write the dog owner a letter saying you are really allergic and you’re struggling and if she sees you coming could she just wait and you will do the same/you’re not being rude not stopping to say hello.
people don’t understand how debilitating it is with allergies and don’t get me started on dogs in John Lewis brushing against clothes…..

bringbackveronicamars · 25/08/2022 15:40

This dog is a nuisance, just not in the ways listed.

No, the dog isn't a nuisance. But it sounds like you're about to become one to your poor neighbour.

Orangello · 25/08/2022 15:40

Eh? You think a dog should be happy with being taken out to pee once per day?

Also if you are so allergic and generally intolerant, why on earth did you buy a place where house rules specifically say dogs allowed?

Ohnohedident · 25/08/2022 15:42

This has got to be a wind up.

Oh, don't be daft.

I doubt this lady encourages her dog to rub all over the OP, lick her face and piss up her door. The dog lives in the building and has every right to walk through it without being made to stop and wait to accommodate someone else's drama.

If OP is that badly allergic, she should have asked about dogs in the building BEFORE she bought her flat.

Yikes. Maybe you are stuck next door to the OP who sounds like a seriously entitled pain in the butt.

KarmaStar · 25/08/2022 15:43

Wtaf?
you want the dog kicked out because you sneeze?
Gfy.

MK85 · 25/08/2022 15:44

Unless the dog is being a nuisance then no action can be enorced based on your personal allergy. Im afraid all you can do is take allergy medication or relocate

Sheetonthebed · 25/08/2022 15:46

Why are you in and out so much that you are meeting the dog 3 times a day? 🤔

DuchessDarty · 25/08/2022 15:46

This is either the nadir of Mumsnet, or possibly the zenith, I can’t decide.

I'm not sure it can qualify for either until we have a diagram.

OP, please can you draw the hallway, the huge dog and the intersection points.

Stellaris22 · 25/08/2022 12:21

I’m allergic to my own dog (I get itchy skin) but I just take a generic Aldi antihistamine that’s non drowsy.

Are we really getting to the point where responsible owners of well behaved dogs aren’t even allowed?

As if. Dogs are allowed everywhere! I expect the OP struggles to even travel on a train these days. Do you work in an office OP, there will no doubt be dogs there, too.

However, if you are moving into a flat that you are buying, are choosing and presumably intended to spend a reasonable period of time living in, I'd have thought it would be one of the first questions you'd ask. Very odd not to raise the issue.

PixieLaLa · 25/08/2022 15:48

and don’t get me started on dogs in John Lewis brushing against clothes…..

Just when you thought this thread couldn’t get any more ridiculous 😂

mbosnz · 25/08/2022 15:50

Your dislike of dogs sounds a lot more detrimental than your allergy to canines. May I suggest reaching into the pantry and grabbing a big ol' can of harden up?

In this country, dogs are everywhere, as you must very well know.

Blowthemandown · 25/08/2022 15:52

@Rustpail I’m allergic to dogs. A few things you can try: try to see if the communal door can be kept open briefly to let some fresh air in from time to time, maybe wear a mask if it’s a lot of dander. Also consider a plant spray mist bottle to damp down what’s in the air as this will help. Shame you didn’t know beforehand but unfortunately not much to be done. If you get on ok with her she might be up for bathing her dog more often/have him go out with damp coat but otherwise you’ll have to either lump it or move. I have to sit in peoples’ gardens when we visit for this reason sometimes! I know it must be disappointing.

lickenchugget · 25/08/2022 15:53

How are you managing to notice how often they are in the hallway, are you out there watching, do you have a ring doorbell?

Why should the dog owner be the one who waits for OP? Why can't OP wait for the dog owner to be clear?

You can't reasonably expect someone to damp their dog down before every single time they take it out to the toilet, which will be multiple times a day.

I too would like a diagram of this enormous terrifying intimidating labrador.
