Painting 5 year old dds toe nails

We are off on holiday tomorrow, I painted my daughters toe nails, DH has thrown a tantrum and told me to remove it talking about it being inappropriate etc, I tried to compromise suggesting to change it to clear purple glitter husband is adamant he wants it off before our trip tomorrow. AIBU to refuse to remove it…. Is it such a big deal ? I mean I couldn’t care less if her toes are painted or not, she asked and I obliged.

It’s like dress up I don’t see the issue whatsoever

escapingthecity · 23/08/2022 16:48

Was it the first time? I think five is too young for any kind of make up, including nail varnish.

Wolfiefan · 23/08/2022 16:50

Mine used to love having her toes done when I did mine at age about three. Not often. Just for fun. And not bright red. She was fond of pastels!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/08/2022 16:50

Has he said what about it is inappropriate? No, kids don't need makeup but a bit of nail varnish for holiday which will come off before she goes back to school then there's no harm.

I'd stand my ground on this.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/08/2022 16:50

I'd also question why his opinion on this is more important than yours.

CantstandCoriander · 23/08/2022 16:51

Nail varnish on 5 year olds is absolutely fine! It's not like you've put mascara on her

redwineisthenewgin · 23/08/2022 16:53

My 3 year old DS currently has his toe nails painted because he wanted to be the same as his sister, who was playing dress up. I don’t see the issue. I won’t let him have his fingernails painted tho, mainly cos he’d probably eat the nail varnish..

LaPufalina · 23/08/2022 16:53

I did my 5yo and 3yo's nails and toenails to match mine on holiday, it's fine!

Hapoydayz · 23/08/2022 16:55

Why does he think he gets the final say?

RhubarbMoon · 23/08/2022 16:57

Weird. My daughter isn't a girly-girl but she likes to have her nails painted sometimes.

I don't really view it the same as makeup that goes on your face. So if I saw a woman with her nails painted but no face makeup, I would just say she has "no makeup" on.

I very rarely do it, but she has seen me paint mine and wants it too (rarely but sometimes she does ask). I got her a few play lipglosses as well as she was always asking to put my lipstick on, they are just clear shimmery gloss.

I remember I was painting my nails one time and she came up and said could she have colourful nails too? I said sure why not, it's just a bit of fun. I'd happily paint my son's too if he asked (I don't have a son though). Some strange woman stopped me at the bus stop to tell me off(!) because my daughter shouldn't have nail polish on. I just looked at her like she was deranged and told her to mind her own business.

ElCaMum · 23/08/2022 16:58

The toe nails is what I started with when my daughter started asking for nail varnish. It's subtle and totally appropriate.

GoAround · 23/08/2022 16:59

Thrown a tantrum?! Is he 5? I’ve done it for DD whenever she asks since she was about 3. Always glittery or pink and only on her toes. I wouldn’t stand for DH tell me I couldn’t.

mountainsunsets · 23/08/2022 17:00

Your DH is being utterly ridiculous.

10HailMarys · 23/08/2022 17:00

Painted toenails are just a fun colourful thing that kids like. It's not at all like wearing makeup, in my opinion. I do think that sometimes makeup on little kids (unless it really just them scribbling on their faces with mum's lipstick at home, or putting rainbow glitter lip balm on or something) can edge into 'sexualisation of children' territory but that really isn't the case with nail polish at all. Kids just like looking down at their toes and seeing a bright colour, to be honest.

I know loads of small children, boys and girls, who love having their toenails painted as a treat. I think your DH is being quite weird about this if he thinks it's 'inappropriate' somehow.

Triffid1 · 23/08/2022 17:02

Blimey, at that age I find boys AND girls love having their nails painted. It says more about how he views nail polish generally - does he see it as "slutty" and was he horrified when Meghan Markle wore dark red nail polish to an event? DD's BFF (a boy) was wearing v cool blue nail polish last week when he came over for a playdate.

He'd hate me. My 7 year old went out wearing sparkly eye shadow and lip gloss today. Just because she found it fun to play dress up!

MassiveSalad22 · 23/08/2022 17:04

Wow he’s an oddball. Tell him I regularly painted my 2 year old BOY’s FINGER nails!! Pink too! He may explode!!!!

PinkButtercups · 23/08/2022 17:11

What is his issue?

My DS (3) wanted his toenails painted the same colour I did mine so I did it.

Most people might not agree but I couldn't care less. He saw mummy had 'paint' on her toes and wanted the same 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Wouldloveanother · 23/08/2022 17:12

My 3 year old asked me to paint her toenails the other day, I haven’t done it yet but was going to as I can’t see the harm?

FangsForTheMemory · 23/08/2022 17:14

Maybe he feels left out? Offer to do his as well!

DdraigGoch · 23/08/2022 17:15

talking about it being inappropriate

How is it? It's a bit of paint on her toenails.

Surely that’s the same the other way round. Why is OP’s opinion more important than his? Just curious.

Well yes, I agree. But he is the one laying down the law and acting as if his opinion is The Final Say.

Darkness22 · 23/08/2022 17:20

I see it as fun and used to paint ds and dd toenails.

AutumnIsHere21 · 23/08/2022 17:23

My 5 year old paints her own (and her two year old brother’s) nails with a Frozen themed set she got for her birthday. They both love it!

APurpleSquirrel · 23/08/2022 17:28

My DD (7) & DS (4) had their toenails painted when I did mine last - now is worn off they want me to redo them!
It's absolutely fine & your 'D'H is being a dick.
