GP says I have no entitlement to have anything 'extra'

I've had so much going on it's just been so hard, I know it's no excuse.

I went to my Gp today to discuss a dietician referral. I have Asperger's (unknown to anyone apart from my mum), and I'm not great with making food, I struggle - plus I am a picky eater.

Anyway, I was hoping to see a dietician for advice and maybe ways I hadn't thought of for healthier eating

In 7 months, I've gone from a Size 10 to a Size 16. I look so big. I looked in the mirror last week, and saw I have no waist anymore Sad I felt fine really until that moment. I knew I put on quite a bit but didn't think it was that bad

GP listened to me and then said 'you know Polly, you aren't entitled to extras. I know that's hard to hear. It must be very difficult caring full time on no sleep. And I suppose that makes you feel like you deserve something else'

He told me to come back in 6 weeks if his suggestions of simple meal prep etc don't work. I didn't know what to say, I felt so sad

I lost my baby son recently, coupled with caring for my disabled DC 24/7 and providing all the care. It's so tough. I know it's no excuse but was it really necessary to phrase it like this?

Sorry for your loss.

Try this...

Not all local authorities offer services but yours might.

@lockedonyou there have been some really shitty things said to you on this thread and you don’t deserve any of them. You are having a horrendous time and I think you must be a spectacularly strong person to even think about asking for help regarding weight issues. That doctor made you feel about 2 inches tall I bet.

What foods do you like? Write 3 lists, one of proteins, one of carbs and one of veg/fruit you like, and are able to eat. If you need to mash them or purée things to fit around any sensory requirements then do that. The vitamins are still there if not the whole fibre content. You do what works for you. If they are there in plain sight it may be easier to pick a balanced meal rather than having to think about “what can I eat today”? which can be overwhelming for anyone let alone someone with the challenges you have on a daily basis.

I can’t give you lots of dietary advice because I’d be a hypocrite! I’m very obese. I do, however, have 2 dc with ASD (and yes one was diagnosed as Asperger’s the month before the terminology changed to say it’s all under the one theme of ASD and we still refer to him as having Asperger’s) and I try my very best to give them the correct food that they will eat. No good giving my daughter anything green, she will not eat it. So I don’t. But I do make sure she gets those nutrients other ways, from other food she will eat.

That’s what I assume you wanted a dieticians advice on. How to meet those nutrients while still losing weight on a sensory and allergy restricted diet? I don’t think that was too much to ask about and simply indicating that you eat ‘extras’ because of your emotions or circumstances was blinkered and narrow minded of that doctor.
