To find this phrase irritating

“Sorry to hear that”
I have a friend who literally says it at everything.

“aw I’m not feeling too good today”
”sorry to hear that”

”the kids are testing my patience today”
”sorry to hear that”

“I had a terrible dream last night”
”sorry to hear that”

“Just ran out of bread”
“sorry to hear that”

i’m starting to think it’s just a sloppy attempt at empathy, even when empathy isn’t required.

is it me? Maybe they find me too negative, although most things are just said in conversation and are a throwaway comment or as an explanation (for not messaging back in a few days).

i thought “sorry to hear that” is something you say when someone dies, not because I couldn’t get a stain out a shirt…

yes I know I’m 100% being ridiculous, petty and unreasonable…like who cares what the reply to me missing a bus.

Who knows what I’d expect them to say in response to these things…
kind of at the point where I want to say to them that if they feel it’s necessary or have an urge to say it then to just ignore it.

P.S. This post is in no way being super super serious, it is a petty irritant in my life that I won’t lose sleep over.

Ha your op made me laugh, I don’t know I suppose it’s just conversation. I have a colleague who massively over reacts to anything I say . For example if I said ‘I ran out of bread this morning’ . She’d say Oh no you poor thing what did you do ? ( it’s not said sarcastic either it’s genuine concern as if I said I’d just had a car crash . Then she’s ask me the next time did I manage to get some bread .
It can really irritate me sometimes but I genuinely just think she’s making conversation she’s a nice person and she feels she has to say something just a nod from most people is fine .

@gettingolderandgrumpy I’m so glad someone found the humour within my extremely serious yet boring and controversial post 😂

somtimes it’s just the tiny things of the nicest people that can be irritating eh! And it is in no way shape or form their fault.
