Men holding hands in the Street

girlfriend44 · 20/08/2022 20:00

Saw two men walking along hand in hand earlier and I admired their bravery and thought hope nobody starts on them.
Have seen women before but not men?
Do you think they were brave. Would you be scared for them if they were your sons?
Brave men. Perhaps it's something we will see more of in the future?

Just checked with my gay couple friends who live in vauchall. They’d hold hands in vauxhall but there are lots of areas in London especially say on Friday night out for drinks because they’d be worried about getting beaten up. Anecdotally their lesbian friends are often even more reluctant to be sue they get so many disgusting comments frem about it

i think that all the virtue signalers on here loudly proclaiming how cool they are with it are doing a real
disservice to gay people who this is still a genuine issue for

People aren’t “loudly proclaiming how cool
they are with it”, though. No virtue signalling. They are saying if it’s something they commonly see where they live.

germsandcoffee · 20/08/2022 21:01

My son has an hidden disability (he's 18) and if out with his dad he has to hold his hand to keep him from running off,a man decided to shout homophobic bullshit at them today 🤬
I was nearby to loudly explain what a prick he was being and embarrassed him enormously in front of his mates ( because nobody messes with my boy 🤣) but it did make me think about how it must feel to be homosexual minding your own business and getting verbal abuse for absolutely nothing 😡.

Itsbritneybitch22 · 20/08/2022 21:02

I saw 2 teen boys holding hands last week and smiled, I don’t think they gave a shit what anyone thinks, wish that people would not have to think this is brave but I guess not all people are nice.

Where do you live, OP? The 1950's?

Where do you live, under a rock?

Denying homophobia still exists in places makes you part of the problem I'm afraid.

And lots of people who are gay, or who have gay family members, are saying they don’t (or often don’t) feel safe doing it.

Picture it: The year is 2022; same-sex couples can openly display affection in public, even in small, rural towns, and nobody bats an eyelid.

Tell me you’re straight without telling me you’re straight.

LampLighter414 · 20/08/2022 21:04

Very Brave. They are more likely to get bashed up for it than women too.

speakout · 20/08/2022 21:04

I have seen lots of same sex couples holding hands in the street in the past few years
Honestly it fills my heart with gladness. Two people caring for each other and being bold enough to assert themselves in public. Given the homophobia in our society it must take courage to stick to out a neck.

brownbeauty80 · 20/08/2022 21:04

@SunnyD44
Yes openly gay
It's actually cute coz they look nervous of their surroundings but still show affection

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 20/08/2022 21:04

@girlfriend44 No, I would not think it odd if I saw 2 men holding hands. However, it is something I rarely see, but I rarely see 2 women holding hands either - OR a man and a woman.

I HATE walking along holding hands, and even though it's meant to be all romantic and shit, I find it restrictive and uncomfortable and irritating. I walk alongside my husband, occasionally arm in arm, (linking arms,) but walking along holding hands, nope. Hate it.

There are still a lot of homophobic people around though, so any 2 men holding hands are taking a risk I think. Sad that it's like this in 2022, but it is.

One thing I DO hate is PDAs. People smooching and snogging in public. Usually younger people who think it's sooooo radical and edgy to be licking each others tonsils in public. I think 'LOL you really think you're the first generation to snog in public, and to have sex don't you?' Daft!

AldiLidlDeeDee · 20/08/2022 21:05

Never seen a male gay couple holding hands around here.
Probably not surprising as I live in rural Ireland. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tell me you’re straight without telling me you’re straight.

You are telling me that the same-sex couples who walk about my small, rural town holding hands are what, a figment of my imagination?

Many gay people can picture it but sadly they're unable to live it.

GingerPushkin · 20/08/2022 21:05

yeah but totnes doesn't count

Edinvillian · 20/08/2022 21:05

My stepson and his partner frequently hold hands in public.

Not too long ago a man was brutally murdered in Trafalgar Square after walking hand in hand with another man; and two lesbians attacked on a London bus.
Yes, both in London.
All those posters saying it's no big deal should note that while it's no big deal for most of us, there are still ignorant, violent homophobes around.

I'm impressed by the posters willfully misunderstanding the OP's point. Here's some examples of homophobic attacks in oh so cool Dublin and London.

GingerPushkin · 20/08/2022 21:06

"well i see it therefore it must happen in wakefield" jeez, some people are so blinkered

Well, that's a great shame. Perhaps it depends where you are.

Tell me you wouldn't recognise homophobia if you fell over it in the street.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/08/2022 21:08

Where I live in the US, I wouldn't say it was 'brave' because it's pretty commonplace. But in certain parts of the US, yes, it would be extremely brave, in some places to the point of foolhardiness. But I applaud those who take a stand for who they are and whom they love. They may not know it, but they're blazing a trail for others to follow.

PeriodBro · 20/08/2022 21:05

No, but that occasionally someone will do a lot more than bat an eyelid and even though it may only happen every few years those people you see holding hands know that every time they go out there is a non-zero chance of it happening and evaluate whether on that day, in that place it is safe to hold hands or not.

Well, yes, perhaps.

So naive.

nomistake · 20/08/2022 21:11

Take it you don't live in Brighton?

ITriedToStopSwearingButICunt · 20/08/2022 21:11

Exactly Lass those were just two off the top of my head.
I also recall now the men stabbed in the park in Reading, and, closer to me, a doctor killed in a park in Cardiff.

It's ridiculous to say that it's all hunky dory and there's no risk to gay people.
