Men holding hands in the Street

Saw two men walking along hand in hand earlier and I admired their bravery and thought hope nobody starts on them.
Have seen women before but not men?
Do you think they were brave. Would you be scared for them if they were your sons?
Brave men. Perhaps it's something we will see more of in the future?

@Anewdayanewdawn do your children not know their fathers? I get it was probably a bit inconvenient if it held you up but it’s hardly homophobic. It does need a male to make a child.’

@Louise0701 Rudely forgot to answer your question! No, our children do not know their ‘fathers’ because they have 2 mothers instead of a mother and a father. They don’t have a father. Hope that clears that up.

lots of straight people on here trying to pretend that things are fine and dandy for gay couples wherever they live. "Well maybe if you live in the middle of nowhere but there's homophobia in London"

All these straight people thinking they’re being all lovely when actually pretending homophobia doesn’t exist is homophobic in itself.

@hyperbyke yup!!

God the ignorance on this thread! My ex and I (both female) would get things shouted at us all the time if we were affectionate/held hands etc. We'd also get the delightful "can I watch/join in".

Homophobia is alive and well. Pretending it doesn't exist helps no one.

The percentage saying the OP is unreasonable is astonishing.

I think posters have demonstrated a quite remarkable lack of reading comprehension and have assumed the OP was saying it was unreasonable for gay couples to hold hands. Which she clearly was not. And an awesome determination to ignore posts from gay people or evidence that homophobic attacks happen in supposedly cool places like London, Brighton, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

I voted YABU as I'm in London and see this quite regularly and think nothing of it. I can imagine the same scenario up north where I'm from would be different, very closed minds, so totally depends where you are.

Treemouser · 26/08/2022 14:02

I'm a lesbian living in a liberal town and it definitely is brave to do this. My partner and I regularly hold hands but never unthinkingly and not in unknown areas or in either of our home towns.

It's not even the threat of being beaten up, which I think is a low risk in a public place. People can say a lot with their facial expressions, or shouting 'lesbos' etc. Shouting has probably only happened to me a 4/5 times in 20 years of being out but it is horrible and really ruins your day and confidence for a bit.

As others have said - read the thread.

There are plenty of examples of homophobia in London and other "cool places"

And the point of the thread wasn't whether you or anyone else can signal how tolerant and inclusive they are.

@Grrrrdarling did you read all the posts about peole
being beaten to a pulp?

Yes I did & I have plenty of gay friends so I know how persecuted they are which is why I said I would have HOPED they wouldn’t get heckled in a developed country.
Nowhere is perfect but my friends stay away from certain areas & can handle themselves just fine.
There was a high profile gay murder near where I live a few years ago, Shane Tunney. Brings it home when it is so close.
