Men holding hands in the Street

girlfriend44 · 20/08/2022 20:00

Saw two men walking along hand in hand earlier and I admired their bravery and thought hope nobody starts on them.
Have seen women before but not men?
Do you think they were brave. Would you be scared for them if they were your sons?
Brave men. Perhaps it's something we will see more of in the future?

@MrsLawrence1 awks - you’re so virtuous and right on you’ve accidentally been massively homiphobic and totally ignored to actual experience of gay people.

pretty much summarises all that is wrong with the virtue signalling of our times

Erm……..OP meet 2022, 2022, meet the OP 🙄🙄

Jeez. Read the thread. This has been said 300 times. It's reductive and ignorant of what ACTUALLY faces gay people in 2022.

Bring over 50 and openly gay let me tell you things are a damn sight better in 2022 than when I was fumbling about being judged as a teen. I cannot agree with you, maybe you and your righteousness is the problem?

What righteousness? Your comment was reductive and has been said countless times on this thread.

Why not read the thread and find out what dozens of gay women and men are talking about when they tell you (and the other 'it's not 1986, y'know' folk) that this kind of response is part of the problem?

FFS. Read the thread. Any number of gay people have commented here to agree with the OP regarding it being brave to hold hands.

You are about the 78th poster to come along with this kind of snide comment.

See this occasionally and no one bats an eyelid. Why on earth would anyone care? It’s surely quite acceptable these days?

@MrsLawrence1 Things may be better but gay people are STILL abused, attacked and murdered. Don’t dismiss their experiences.

Anewdayanewdawn · 22/08/2022 17:42

All the people on here saying it’s commonplace and homophobia doesn’t exist and no-one cares remind me of the white people who claim racism doesn’t exist because they e never seen it or never been a victim of it…

Anewdayanewdawn · 22/08/2022 17:45

Still, maybe I’m pissed off because DW and Inhave just taken our kids to a Western European country with supposedly modern laws and attitudes and spend a good 45 minutes with immigration ‘proving’ our kids were ours and answering questions about their ‘father’. The officials were clearly not happy about dealing with 2 women married to each other, with children.

A pp wrote brilliantly on this upthread. The 'it's 2022, not 1982' comments miss the point spectacularly, and the pp drew comparison with the 'I don't seen colour' people, trying to show how not-racist they are, by denying/skewing the experience of BAME and others.

Louise0701 · 22/08/2022 18:00

@Anewdayanewdawn do your children not know their fathers? I get it was probably a bit inconvenient if it held you up but it’s hardly homophobic. It does need a male to make a child.

How often has this happened to you? Does this strike you as standard procedure?

But it's not acceptable everywhere and to everyone, including one poster on this thread. Who hasn't bothered to come back...

The people who murder us, beat us up and verbally abuse us care.

glittertea · 22/08/2022 18:38

I'm in a same sex relationship and we don't hold hands or really show any indication that were together because of the attitude of some people. I love in a generally friendly gay area there's lots of gay bars close to us but I just can't be bothered with the attention it sometimes attracts. I know it's 2022 and it should be acceptable but many people still don't like to see it.

The number of sexual comments I've had in the past from men is shocking just because we're two women in a relationship. Asking really personal questions about sexual history if I've ever been with a man, would we try it. It's just not worth it. For gay men the risk of violence is an issue even more for them. So I think it's incredibly brave when I see gay couples holding hands.

Lapun · 22/08/2022 19:09

No sane Liverpudlian even though I so not live there would move to Manchester. I never forget I am from Liverpool and am proud of my roots. I am not and have never been homophobic not am a racist. I am old and see the world as I observe it, I do not have rose coloured glasses either!

Hello 1997, how've you been?

Tip of the day: it helps to read, or at least get the gist of, a long thread before plopping on some inanity.

It saves embarrassment - at your end.

Stop negating and silencing the very voices most impacted by this.

Cliff1975 · 22/08/2022 19:17

My DS is gay and in a relationship. When he is in his university town he has no problems and his friends at home are fine with it, no issues, which is also true of his siblings and their friends. However, in his home town he has been thrown out of a pub as he danced with his boyfriend and his brother was badly beaten up at school over it when he was 14 . So it is a much safer and LGBT friendly world but we are not there yet and i do worry abut him-depending on where he is.

I mean Singapore only legalised it today. TODAY.

Men holding hands in public is brave…. A lot of people are still awful.

and have said they're going to change the constitution to make achieving marriage equality harder, no doubt to appease the homophobes.
