DH has completely changed

GeorgiaDe · 20/08/2022 17:18

My DH has completely altered his worldview/ opinion over the last few years. It was gradual, and only now am I coming to realise the full extent of it. We've been together for 15 years.

He believes in the great reset, believes there will be a nuclear war, covid is a hoax and the vaccines are killing people. He's stockpiled around £3k worth of food/ camping equipment/ knives. Our spare room is full of this stuff. He's also invested thousands into cryptocurrency.

He believes that inflation is all part of the "plan" and all the world leaders are "in on it" together.

I can't take it anymore. He disrespects my opinion by continuing to talk about it daily, even when I've expressed that I do not share the same opinion and don't want to argue about it. He tells me that "I will see when the time comes."

Every time there's news of a celebrity death/ unexplained death of a young person, he blames the covid vaccine. He threatened to leave me if I got it, although changed his mind when I made clear how serious I was.

Aibu to feel at the end of my tether? It's so draining.

It's not CT if it's backed by evidence

It is, however, a conspiracy theory if it can't be disproved by evidence.

What evidence could you find in your 'research' that would cause you to believe your theory was wrong?
Cause if the answer is 'none', that should perhaps suggest you're not as logical as you think you are.

loginsaredicks · 21/08/2022 23:47

Just because you like be spoonfed by the mainstream media, why do you think it's our job to do the same?

Quite frankly the last few years have opened my eyes in lots of ways and I have no desire to help anyone who threw anyone under the bus for the government etc.

Scurryfunge12 · 22/08/2022 00:03

@loginsaredicks are you not seeing the irony in your posts? You ARE being spoon fed yourself, because you’re clicking on videos on YouTube that 1. You want to believe so you will seek them out and 2. You are being directed to by algorithms. You are in an echo chamber that is feeding your confirmation bias.

When you make a claim, it is up to you to back it up and if you were so confident in your convictions you would be able to link copious amounts of evidence from reliable sources, but as predicted you just parroted back ‘do your own research’ how about no?

You people wouldn’t know what research was if it slapped you in the face, and yet you tell everyone else to wake up. Completely gone.

Scurryfunge12 · 22/08/2022 00:06

YouTube is definitely more reliable than the media though isn’t it? How? They get paid per click and subscriber, they profit from the controversy and fear. Don’t you think if it was so easy to find everything out reliably on YouTube that we should just do away with education because everyone would already be a genius? 🤣

CJsGoldfish · 22/08/2022 01:04

It's not CT if it's backed by evidence
So the fact that they are not means they actually ARE CTs then, right? 🤷‍♀️

Marvellousmadness · 22/08/2022 03:16

Time for a divorce on the basis of your dh's insanity

I predicted this response a few messages back when I said "I would genuinely like it if someone did this as whenever I've asked I've only ever had 'it's all in Google, if you're interested then look it up' or 'do your own research' etc. Never even had so much as a YouTube link with evidence in."

So predictable and disappointing.

Not one single link to some evidence that shows something most people believe to be a conspiracy theory, due to being 'spoonfed' by the MSM, is actually true?

Piglet89 · 22/08/2022 07:51

This has happened to my dad, OP. It’s ruined our relationship.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 22/08/2022 08:03

@loginsaredicks

Why do you think YouTube is a more credible source than say the Guardian, Times, or BBC?

If there really was some secret organisation running the show and trying to manipulate the masses surely the global media and technology conglomerate Alphabet would be part of it?

Why would they allow their own organisations such as YouTube and Google to host evidence against them unless it was all part of their plot for control i.e., pretend to be the voice of reason and lure you into a false sense of security so they can manipulate you later and you won't question it?

You should really take your own advice and get off the easily corruptible internet to do your own research, and maybe try not to be so easily led by an algorithm.

I don't think YT or Alphabet can be trusted at all. They have proved themselves just as bad and their censorship is terrible. Shadow banning, removing subscriptions by stealth etc.

You seem obsessed by the algorithm though.

But the Guardian, Times, or BBC etc no longer have any credibility. They don't report the news. They tell you want to think and create the narrative for the 1%

Phineyj · 22/08/2022 08:58

If the above were true, we'd not be able to find anyone via Mumsnet who'd ever contributed to, been featured in, or written a news story.

I'll start. I have (I used to work as a press officer).

Lightscribe · 22/08/2022 09:00

The conspiracy theorists think that we’re all eventually moving into a digital cashless society using things like digital IDs, how silly is that?

I mean these well known conspiracy websites like BoE and .gov are spouting all this nonsense.

Ridiculous isn’t it?

www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-digital-identity-attributes-trust-framework-updated-version/uk-digital-identity-and-attributes-trust-framework-alpha-version-2

www.bankofengland.co.uk/research/digital-currencies

Best not pay any attention to these conspiracies, as the economy is just fine and everything will continue as normal same as it ever was.

Keepingupappearance · 22/08/2022 09:04

@Lightscribe indeed. And there’s quite a lot of policy work going on to consider the implications of tgis across society.

Scurryfunge12 · 22/08/2022 09:07

@Lightscribe but that isn’t a conspiracy, a cashless society has been known about for years what with the rise of internet banking etc. Not cash per se, but paper will become more obselete. The definition of a conspiracy is that it’s all secretive and neferious. Not out there on Bank of England and government websites. I don’t understand your point? It’s not some big scary evil plan. Covid has probably sped things up in that respect but that was expected for at least 15 years that eventually paper will fall out of favour, it’s just time and technology moving on.

Cornettoninja · 22/08/2022 09:16

You seem obsessed by the algorithm though

because it’s a huge factor in feeding people a bias.

But the Guardian, Times, or BBC etc no longer have any credibility. They don't report the news. They tell you want to think and create the narrative for the 1%

they are far more credible and trustworthy than sources with no regulation, requirements for transparency or arena to be held to account. If we start from the point that all news is biased to some degree (and it is) then you’re arguing that people who choose largely unregulated platforms to transmit their version of news as more credible largely because they’ve told you that everyone else is a liar…. but they’re not. Confused

A lot of the larger alt.news sources aren’t prepared to put their money where their mouth is and formally identify as news or even factual. They call themselves ‘entertainment’. In 2017 Alex Jones argued during his divorce that his public persona and content was ‘performance art’ and he was nothing like that irl.

So you mean to say moving towards eventual CBDCs is not a conspiracy?

I mean the ability for the government to have more control over people and ‘money’ has to be a conspiracy right?
They wouldn’t be able just to link say benefits (like a universal basic income) to your digital ID right?
Essentially becoming a bit like crypto where tokens expire, bonus spending, liquidity added and removed from the system right?

I mean the IMF and articles from the FT are hardly doing any favours in egging the conspiracy theorists on are they?

Scurryfunge12 · 22/08/2022 09:30

@Lightscribe If it was a bloody conspiracy it wouldn’t be so blatantly out there for all to see on big organisational websites.

Do you not think it’s odd how one minute the CT’s are saying ‘don’t trust the media or the government, they lie’ but the next minute quote media and government sources as proof.

That’s confirmation bias right there, you are cherry picking to fit your existing beliefs. You can’t cherry pick.

Equally, people don’t believe scientists unless their research says what they want it to say.

God almighty.

‘’Yes, there’s a big nasty plan we don’t want anyone knowing and only the most intelligent of thinkers is privy to this information, but we are going to put it on our website as plain as day’’ 🤣

Your reasoning is flawed beyond ridiculousness.

Cornettoninja · 22/08/2022 09:44

re: cashless society specifically - people’s wealth/ability to procure wealth has always been subject to the control of whatever system of power was in place. Taxation and confiscation of assets has been going on since civilisation emerged. Digital or physical cash - we’re already subject to the same restrictions/pitfalls.

the point is the powerful can control any system of currency, the representation of the currency isn’t as important as the morality of the people in charge of it (in the UK’s case government and largest corporations). It’s a distraction to focus on physicality of it.

You keep telling others to do their own research by ignoring the msm and watching YouTube yet, now you're saying it can't be trusted either. So how does one carry out "research" when according to you everything is tainted?

Also why is credibility an issue when it comes to the Guardian or Times but not when it comes to a YouTuber or vblogger?

Also also, I've posted only once (prior to this) on this thread so there's no obsession from me about an algorithm or anything else, but it's important to understand how social media channels work and that the content they expose you too is not random.

Farmageddon · 22/08/2022 09:54

Was reading about the Bitcoin crash in the Times yesterday, and it made me think of this thread. So many self proclaimed Youtuber 'experts' encouraging people to invest in stuff they got paid to sell basically. Now it has collapsed, many of them have disappeared, closed their youtube channel and no accountability for their lies.

Farmageddon · 22/08/2022 09:56

I also wonder if Alex Jones' trial - the admissions in court that Sandyhook was real, and therefore what he was peddling was bullshit, and how much money he made personally off his lies - will have any affect on his disciples or other similar bullshit believers?

Phineyj · 22/08/2022 10:24

No it won't. People who have committed a lot to believing something are rarely swayed by rational argument.

See: religion, politics, ideology.

Bingo.

It’s much harder to convince people they’ve been lied to than it is to convince them of a lie. (Mark Twain I think).

Theres a lot of pride and emotional investment tied into belief. It’s an art form to be able to admit a mistake and a fairly rare skill.

Your reasoning is flawed beyond ridiculousness.

Let me get this straight from your point of view.

So you agree that we are heading to CBDCs and digital IDs and it’s not a conspiracy, that’s all I wanted to confirm thanks.

Do you think that the US would still be the reserve currency then at that stage?

Because the WEF (you know that place where the countries leaders go each year to discuss the global economy - you know the ones YOU vote in) seems to think the US won’t.

www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/11/8-predictions-for-the-world-in-2030/

With that in mind, do you think that change on something that’s been the worlds primary reserve currency for 60 years might have some major impact on the economy and supply chains?

So is preparing and being sensible for any forthcoming economic turbulence justified? Or is it just a conspiracy theory? Because that’s the point of this thread.

Indoctro · 22/08/2022 10:48

I don't see anything wrong with the prepping side of things, as long as he is rotating the food so nothing is wasted

We got left high and dry in NE Scotland with storms. Rural communities cut off and no access to food etc. it was a absolute shambles.

Never will I be left in that situation again. We have installed a log burner for heat and a generator for electricity , and I have also done food prepping

I don't think he is unreasonable in that sense.

If freak weather comes no one really comes to help you, did you see what happened in the big freeze in Houston. I had friends there thinking they were going to freeze to death.

As for crypto..I know people investing in hold to try and protect there money from those inflation. Again I don't think your husband is crazy by trying to be proactive in protecting your future for the worst.

I would just let him be and tell him you support what he is doing but can he do it quietly and not bang on to you about it all the time.

I'm always suspicious of what the future holds , and I would take comfort in his efforts to try and prepare for the worse

My motto is prepare for the worse and hope for the best.
