DH has completely changed

GeorgiaDe · 20/08/2022 17:18

My DH has completely altered his worldview/ opinion over the last few years. It was gradual, and only now am I coming to realise the full extent of it. We've been together for 15 years.

He believes in the great reset, believes there will be a nuclear war, covid is a hoax and the vaccines are killing people. He's stockpiled around £3k worth of food/ camping equipment/ knives. Our spare room is full of this stuff. He's also invested thousands into cryptocurrency.

He believes that inflation is all part of the "plan" and all the world leaders are "in on it" together.

I can't take it anymore. He disrespects my opinion by continuing to talk about it daily, even when I've expressed that I do not share the same opinion and don't want to argue about it. He tells me that "I will see when the time comes."

Every time there's news of a celebrity death/ unexplained death of a young person, he blames the covid vaccine. He threatened to leave me if I got it, although changed his mind when I made clear how serious I was.

Aibu to feel at the end of my tether? It's so draining.

A couple of thoughts bouncing around my head - why do people into ‘alternative theories’ unquestioningly trust internet sources, particularly ones that use massive corporations like YouTube or Spotify as a platform?

Are people aware that governments are quite happy for these theory peddlers to run wild because it distracts from what’s actually going on?

Reset is a pretty good descriptor for every shift in civilisation that has gone before. Anyone who knows their history knows that this change, sometimes massive change, is inevitable. With peak oil fast approaching (or already here depending on where you look) and climate change of course civilisation is going to adapt and change. If it’s all going to be so horrible what are you prolonging it for with a couple of bags of extra pasta and a penknife’s? Radical change isn’t going to be held back by delaying it for a few weeks. Surviving won’t happen by battling against whatever ‘it’ is.

Your DH is wise. You will thank him next year.

Why? We are all entitled to have an opinion but bombarding your spouse with it, and using joint money, is different.

i liked a pp post - I have no intention of being surrounded by tinned peas and anarchy either. I would like to live normally as long as possible.

I always thinking people like you are having a "joke".

I was also amazed how much money InfoWars made. Who wants to listen to a crazy man shouting?

@StridTheKiller rather than derailing this thread I suggest you start your own and invite people to debate with you there.

this is what happened to me when I asked for support about my own ‘dp’ a while ago and it was a real pain trying to sift through the genuine advice and those arguing over who’s right and wrong.

op I hope you were able to gain some useful info on this thread at least. Good luck Flowers

How are things with you? I'm interested to hear from posters who mentioned recovery but I don't think any have returned.

catless · 21/08/2022 10:14

My brother is heading this way. He doesn't seem to realise that his 'independent research' online is actually being fed to him because of his previous searches and online interactions.

AluckyEllie · 21/08/2022 10:23

It really is a shame because it’s clear how much you love him but you have to leave. He won’t change and if you try to get him to see another point of view he’ll have answers - ‘that’s them brainwashing you.’ It doesn’t seem like you have a relationship at the moment as you aren’t allowed your opinion, he doesn’t support you, you aren’t having fun together.

Start thinking what you will do, he might be keen to move out and go buy some survivalist fortress in a rural area! Make sure those silver coins are taken into account when you divvy up. Tell your friends and family and let them support you.

bellac11 · 21/08/2022 10:28

Ive been thinking about this thread overnight and just how many people seem to have been caught up in this spiral, both the believers but also their family

It seems a big problem and must be very lonely for the partners and family members.

Occam's razor disproves the idea of a giant great reset that's been planned in secret and is designed to harm individuals.

The WEF is not a shadowy sinister organisation. It's describing the problems with current capitalism- which we can all see, right? - inequity, oil dependency, and the paticular way our overconsumption of resources and economic growth is now bumping against the boundaries of the ecosystems of the planet. They are taking responsibility as a membership organisation of the people who DO have power in the world to transparently discuss how we could run things differently. What's the problem with that? Why does anyone think it's being done secretly? What, in fact, should they do, if not that? There's no future for conventional economics.

Why shouldn't we own nothing and be happy? Better than owning a load of shite and being unhappy. I would invite conspiracy theorists to engage with the problems of the world and proffer solutions rather than hide from the problems by whining that the grown ups are corrupt.

Really well put! @EthicalNonMahogany

He's right.

A once in a 100 years virus, with a miracle vaccine, a war with Russia, then a climate emergency. Hmm.

Scurryfunge12 · 21/08/2022 11:14

@WGO what ‘’research?’’ What effort has he gone to to do all this in-depth research? Google searching from bullshit sources that already confirm what he wants to believe? That’s not research and it’s definitely not more reliable than the media. Do have a word with yourself. The irony.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 21/08/2022 11:16

I second any PPs who have suggested looking at Marianna Spring's, How I talk to the victims of conspiracy theories.

Marianna Spring is a hilarious shill.

5 billionaires own 80% of UK media and you think this is healthy and trustworthy?

Of course not but firstly that’s not the topic of this thread, secondly on what planet are you of you don’t think that the same people have the same control over alt.news platforms. Newsflash - they do. There’s no alligence if there’s money to be made and influence to exert.

it’s interesting to me that when covid was first making ripples from China that alt.news and conspiracy sites (even good old Joe Rogan was initially for caution) were all over the news whilst others were very much of the mindset it was a non-story. It’s almost like when it was accepted as a large problem and ‘mainstream’ this subset rejected it instead of being satisfied they were right. Maybe it wasn’t ‘special’ enough anymore or maybe they shit themselves that one of their ‘theories’ was actually right and they just couldn’t deal with it - who knows but my money is on a mixture of both.

The people most wedded to the idea of these more recent doctrines appear to be those least equipt mentally to deal with them should they actually happen imho.

teaandcats · 21/08/2022 11:48

Why shouldn't we own nothing and be happy? Better than owning a load of shite and being unhappy.

The point behind the "you will own nothing and be happy" meme is that you won't own anything, you will rent everything on subscription style services, ie. someone will own everything, it just won't be you, or me, or Pete down the road. The means of production and now the very products themselves will be even further concentrated into the hands of a wealthy few.

Chairman and founder of the WEF Klaus Schwab wrote a book, The Fourth Industrial Revolution and it lays everything out pretty clearly. I'd wager most normal people would find his vision for the future to be fairly dystopian once you drill right down into the details. There really should be more discussion about this, considering how much influence the WEF has gained over world affairs over the last few decades.

Cornettoninja · 21/08/2022 11:50

A once in a 100 years virus, with a miracle vaccine

disease happens. The 60/70 or so years we’ve had with relatively few serious infectious diseases (in the west specifically, this is not a global truth) is the anomaly. The vaccine is only due to scientific advances in capabilities and is an objectively good thing.

a war with Russia

We’re not at war for a start and this situation has been brewing since Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014.

then a climate emergency

again, not new and has been happening and people sounding the alarm for well over twenty years. It’s certainly more stark against the backdrop of current events and of the last few years but it’s in no way a ‘surprise’.

You’re listing issues without context and seeing things that simply aren’t there. That’s how people ended up sacrificing goats.

tenterden · 21/08/2022 11:55

He sounds terrifying to me OP.

i would not be having children with him or moving house with him.

I would be leaving him before your own MH is destroyed. Flowers

@entropynow Have you evidence to disprove the Great Reset thing please, or just shutting down debate by being rude and patronising?

This is like saying to an atheist ' have you evidence to disprove god?'

Cornettoninja · 21/08/2022 12:06

@GeorgiaDe i do hope you’ve gleaned some helpful stuff from this thread. Even if it has just shown you that you are undoubtedly not alone in having to deal with this.

The Reddit board recommended earlier, qanoncasualities is worth a read, even just to help order your thoughts.

I hope you find your way through this and to some sort of peace.

@loginsaredicks , you made me wanting to laugh. "A miracle vaccine"??? It's not miracle. It's the result of years of medicine advancement and research with some serious balance of decision making between risk and benefit. Miracle? It's ignorance talking.

Idunnowhyibother · 21/08/2022 12:12

Sounds like lockdown triggered intense paranoia and he is happier closeted with his apocalyptic fantasy world. Personally I would divorce and never look back. My brother became like this over the years and it took a nearly terminal stay in hospital hooked up to life support to knock that shit from his mind. But the damage done to friends and family is still there. Anyway if a great reset is coming having crypto and a room full of tins is utterly utterly pointless but he'd be too deluded to see that. And if you do divorce, getting half his crypto might be very hard....if he hasn't lost it in a scam....

Onandupw · 21/08/2022 12:21

I think it’s such a shame that they choose to use the phrase Great Reset. It so easily lends itself to all this conspiracy language.

if they had called it an Evidence Based Reassessmemt of Corr Functions To Better Reflect A Reasonable Balance of Long and Short Term Social and Economic Goals none of the loonies would have noticed it.

He's right.

A once in a 100 years virus, with a miracle vaccine, a war with Russia, then a climate emergency. Hmm.

Prime example of looking for patterns when there aren't any. Basically shit happens and sometimes there is more shit than normal. Sometimes one bad thing (pandemic) leads to other bad things (recession).

I know the idea of randomly occurring negative events can be scary to some people, but there really isn't a pattern or a plan. Government leaders are flawed human beings not evil geniuses.

StridTheKiller · 21/08/2022 12:35

@EthicalNonMahogany Thankyou. It's nice to have someone intelligent explain how they view things, instead of all the small minded faux superior people giving monosyllabic answers. I really worry about the Great Reset stuff, so thank you sincerely for a calm, intelligent response ❤.

Zilla1 · 21/08/2022 13:07

Schroedinger's vaccine, simultaneously a miracle and the work of the devil, killing people now (though with fewer haemorrhages than COVID infections) and in the future when presumably it get's triggered. Though I don't know if this reply uses enough syllables to pass the threshold.
