Crisps & dips, cheeseburgers on burger baps, large salad, spicy wedges, corn on the cob, strawberries & ice cream for dessert?

What would you add/change?

OP posts:

Sounds nice but the only actual 'main' food is burgers. I'd expect more options/variety at a BBQ, ie, at least sausages, some form of chicken & a veggie option.

apintortwo · 20/08/2022 00:29

Can I come? 😄

So should I add sausages too? Cheeseburgers, chicken kebabs and sausages? God…how do people eat all that..🤣and I like my food

On another BBQ thread recently people were saying they’d have bbq at 5-6pm and then would expect another meal at 10pm. Crazy and greedy!

WhatInFreshHell · 20/08/2022 00:52

Do all BBQs have to cater for vegetarians now, regardless of whether there will be vegetarians attending or not?

Just in case a vegetarian happens to be passing by ?

It does sound nice OP, but your dessert would do nothing for me, as I have a sweet tooth and find strawberries so overrated.
I loved the idea about adding chocolate brownies too.

scatteredglitter · 20/08/2022 07:44

I d add haloumi skewers (chunks haloumi peppers courgette )
And as a side mango and cucumber (diced small, with a squeeze of lime and some coriander )

Oh an jalapeño relish (ballymaloe ) for the burgers !)

Hobbesmanc · 20/08/2022 07:59

I think sometimes people go,a bit bonkers with a bbq. If you went to a restaurant or diner you'd be happy with chip and dip starter. Decent quality burger and several sides and pudding. You'd not order a second main.

There's only six of them. No veggie. There was a time before halloumi everyone!

A really good coleslaw or Greek salad plus corn and wedges is ample. Plus tomato. Onion. Cheese etc for the burger.

felulageller · 20/08/2022 08:26

All you are Bbqing is the burgers though?

Not much of a BBQ!

You need sausages, chicken drumsticks etc.

And veg kebabs.

Nekomata · 20/08/2022 08:38

I think it's fine as a dinner, but I agree that people usually make a bit more effort for a BBQ. For us, a BBQ is a longer more relaxed affair.

BaileySharp · 20/08/2022 08:41

Personally I'm not keen on burgers so I'd add some sausages

Aside from Mexican – tortilla chips and guacamole – I can’t picture chips and dip as a restaurant starter.

Otherwise I tend to agree – in this scenario where it’s dinner for six. But I think the thread has gone down the route of “barbecue as event” where it lasts all afternoon and covers lunch, afternoon food, dinner.

@WowIlikereallyhateyou What should I add to the burgers and chicken kebabs? There are only 4 adults and 2 kids, we’ll be stuffed 😅

I think this is the key post people are missing.

It's dinner cooked on the bbq, not a bbq with guests.

Op you don't need a tonne of food that will then get wasted. Your dinner sounds great.

dmask · 20/08/2022 11:43

If you’re just going to do burgers, surely it’s easier and cheaper to just do them in the kitchen (grill or fry) as you’ll have the oven on for chips etc?

I would say the whole point of a bbq is that you can get out of the kitchen! That’s why I never make bbq food that needs oven involvement. Greek salad, kotfas, marinaded chicken thighs, sardines, and some tzatziki.

No one has missed anything..

the OP asked ‘is this a nice bbq?’

implying she’s having a bbq… where a range of food is normally supplied.

Yes, I'm kind of wondering why she asked.

  • Is this a nice BBQ?
  • Well, there isn't much BBQ food there. How about adding some more meat?
  • Oh, my goodness, I couldn't possibly eat more meat.
Maggiethecat · 20/08/2022 14:15

I was invited to a 'bbq' once and was given the choice of having a burger or a piece of chicken. It was very bizarre as they didn't have a lot of side accompaniments either.

It was not a large group - perhaps 10 people but I was gobsmacked at how very limited the choice was and the amount of food on offer. We had travelled quite a way to get there and it just felt mean.

Mrsjayy · 20/08/2022 16:24

@Maggiethecat I think we were at the same Bbq I was absolutely starving and a bit too drunk 🥴 the hosts said there was loads of food and just bring "yourselves 😅

Maggiethecat · 20/08/2022 23:54

@Mrsjayy - think we must have been, got told same thing - ‘just bring yourselves’!

Would happily have brought mi dinner too 😂
