I really liked my neighbour until she said this

I've recently moved to a new area and was talking to my neighbour, who I really like.

Somehow the conversation went to GPs and how you can never get appointments and basically have to beg to be seen nowadays.

She was saying how it didn't used for be that way... before...

She then went on to say that it's because of all the immigrants that have come into this country and how our country is too small to hold all these people.

She also talked about the illegals coming in on boats etc and how terrible it is.

I am immigrant. I didn't come on a boat and I have a good job etc. But essentially I came to this country. I've never claimed benefits or anything like that. I'm on a high salary etc and studied here etc etc. So, I'm well established. Essentially whenever people say stuff like that, alarm bells start ringing for me.

Am I seeing it too black and white ? It's just difficult when someone says stuff like this to someone who also came here..... as an immigrant...

Immigrants are soft targets. The government doesn't mind because it lets them off the hook for their underfunding. One would have thought that they would have to start bearing the responsibility after Brexit but somehow there is always another scapegoat and people are just too willing to keep letting them off the hook.

Your casual ageism speaks volumes. It's not worth engaging with people like you.

Just checked back in to see my previous post had been removed by MNHQ.

It's incredibly revealing that causal racism and xenophobia are more palatable and tolerable to you than supposed ageism (which I don't agree my post was). There is nothing ageist about saying that I think those who creating the so called problem should be the one's to bear the brunt of any negative impacts associated with it.

Can you explain which part you thought was ageist and while you're at it what your solution would be for dealing with issues of a labour shortage and aging population would be?

woodhill · 28/08/2022 12:23

Aren't we going to be in a recession soon with the energy crisis so really should be making sure everyone where possible is in full employment and we should have invested in upskilling people in the UK in the first place

If you don't agree that your nasty vile post was ageist, then speak to MNHQ about it.

Someone who holds views such as yours is not someone I will be engaging in debate with.

Even MN would have to admit that importing millions of people is stupid when we can't keep the lights on and people are shivering in their houses.

Gingernan it is not “narrow” to disagree with your opinions. So you have a West Indian partner. So what? I actually live in the West Indies and i love the people there. But i am British and think the govt has not got any worthwhile policies on illegal immigration. It is not Racist to think that we need to control our borders although there are some people whose views are xenophobic. Mostly they are elderly people who do not like change. Wait until you are very old and see what you think then. This idea that if you are a Tory then ipso facto you are racist is bunkum. I gave most of my working life to teaching English to overseas students in parts of the world that most of you will never work in. My past students would be shocked if they knew some white people think their teacher was a racist! Maybe one day you will come to live in the West Indies. Local people are friendly and have a great sense of humour. This is not England. I am just surprised at the narrow point of view on this thread. Freedom of opinion is sacrosanct to many of us and so is freedom to express your opinion. I fear some younger people dont agree with that freedom.

Funny how you’ve benefited from immigration yourself and yet begrudge others.

I wonder what opportunities and housing you’ve taken away from West Indian people?

Ans no one has said they want uncontrolled immigration, pointless arguing against straw man arguments.

What do you call 1 million people a year? A trickle of immigration?

The government love mass immigration for the reason outlined above.

The middle class love it as they get some one to serve them their Starbucks, wipe their arses when they are older (as someone already stated they wanted them to do), and push up their asset prices (houses, pensions etc)

The working class might not be so keen now life is starting to get a lot harder and they are competing more than ever with the new bodies.

So I ask again, what genuine problem has been solved with mass immigration*

  • and not including anything that is required because of it!

Your 1 million number is a lie. From the gov site:

In the year ending June 2021:

573,000 people migrated into the UK and 334,000 people emigrated from it, leaving net migration of 239,000 people. This represents the balance of long-term migrants moving in and out of the country.

I'm not an immigrant but I would avoid her. Not an opinion I want to hear about it a person I would be involved with.

I agree with that. Just be civil, limit your contact.

I did start going through all the different visa status etc to add it up for you, as your reference provided a very limited and somewhat inaccurate oversight when one wants to see the bigger picture. However I noticed the telegraph had already done it for me, so I'll just post you that instead to save me the effort.

If she does it again just face her down and shame her.

Say in a calm firm polite voice, not smiling, with eye contact;

"I'm an immigrant; you're talking about people like me. " Then wait. Now she's the one on the spot feeling embarrassed, and not knowing what to say.

Why should she be embarrassed? I wouldn't be embarrassed. Do you think that we shouldn't dare speak of facts to actual immigrants?

Visas are a really poor way to measure net migration (as I assume is what people want to do if they are trying to look at the impacts of immigration, and particularly comparing post-Brexit to pre-Brexit. Plenty of visa categories are short term in nature - treating 'visas granted' as immigration is misleading at best.

Freedomfighters · 29/08/2022 09:37

Yet the overall population has increased by nearly 25 percent since 1981.

No infrastructure to support it.

One doesn't have to be a genius to work out what sort of impact that's going to have. Just a basic grasp of maths.

Reimu · 29/08/2022 14:10

"Please explain the way to apply for asylum from another European country without "sneaking into" the UK."

I did not specify which country the illegal immigrants come from. I was correcting the claim that "there is no such thing as an illegal immigrant".

JassyRadlett · 29/08/2022 14:50

No infrastructure to support it.

The idea that infrastructure hasn't changed in the last 40 years is quite a big claim...

It certainly hasn't changed enough to respond to either increased numbers of immigrants or the population increase caused by increased longevity coinciding with the baby boom. And it's been particularly poor since austerity. Brexit has also dealt a blow to the human side of eg health infrastructure.

But that doesn't mean it can't, or shouldn't. It's a failing of governments, not immigrants.

You wouldn't need to keep changing infrastructure though and all the environmental damage that results if you didn't keep importing so many people. Up until the prick that was Blair opening the floodgates, you didnt have half the problems we are facing today.

You clearly don’t know what ‘vested interest’ means.

What interest do I have in immigration numbers?

And you refuse to understand the simple fact that the 574k (or whatever) student visas you have cited, are not permanent residents. They have to return home at the end of their studies.

I don't need to explain. The deleted post spoke for itself. And MNHQ clearly thought it wasn't in the spirit. Or they wouldn't have deleted it. Obviously.

As for explaining anything to that poster, there's no point in debating with someone who has such hatred of older people. And then they pretend they want a civil debate. They don't. And I'm not wasting my time with them.
