I really liked my neighbour until she said this

I've recently moved to a new area and was talking to my neighbour, who I really like.

Somehow the conversation went to GPs and how you can never get appointments and basically have to beg to be seen nowadays.

She was saying how it didn't used for be that way... before...

She then went on to say that it's because of all the immigrants that have come into this country and how our country is too small to hold all these people.

She also talked about the illegals coming in on boats etc and how terrible it is.

I am immigrant. I didn't come on a boat and I have a good job etc. But essentially I came to this country. I've never claimed benefits or anything like that. I'm on a high salary etc and studied here etc etc. So, I'm well established. Essentially whenever people say stuff like that, alarm bells start ringing for me.

Am I seeing it too black and white ? It's just difficult when someone says stuff like this to someone who also came here..... as an immigrant...

Depends which chart you look at

We have taken many refugees alongside general immigration so I think we have and continue to play our part

Where does it end

Which chart or statistics are you basing your statement on?

GlassDeli · 27/08/2022 01:12

Uncontrolled immigration is bad for everyone, you as an immigrant included.

I have to agree. There is a difference between a sensible policy which welcomes refugees and essential workers, while not giving a free pass to, say, 30 year old male 'child' migrants, or trying to prevent people traffickers from operating.

verdantverdure · 27/08/2022 01:18

Who's got uncontrolled immigration?

loginsaredicks · 27/08/2022 08:58

She's right. Just because it offends you is your problem.

I can't think of a single problem we face that isn't down to mass immigration.

Equally I can't think of a single issue that has been solved by mass immigration.

phishy · 27/08/2022 09:38

@loginsaredicks We don’t have ‘mass immigration’. And immigrants will be taking care of you in your old age, let’s hope you learn a bit of respect by then.

Don't we? According to our useless government in August:

1M people in one year!

Why do you we expect immigrants to look after us when old? Bit racist.

Visa / asylum figures:

330k+ work visas (+72% on 2019)

480k+ study visas (+71% on 2019)

75k asylum claims by main applicants and dependants (fifth highest ever and most since 2002)

230k granted entry for resettlement (Ukraine, HK, Afghanistan)

loginsaredicks · 27/08/2022 10:03

That should read as 1 million people in a year! No edit button on MN?

phishy · 27/08/2022 10:05

@loginsaredicks where is your data from? You do know that students go back to their home country yes?

And immigrants are already taking care of people in hospitals and care homes. Nothing racist about that, unless you see those jobs as unworthy?

Only from the the people allowing it...

Tories, Labour it doesn't matter. They all need mass immigration. There is no way to vote for alternative. There is no democracy.

We certainly do have mass immigration.
If you don't understand that then I would suggest you go and educate yourself, rather than argue the toss about something you seemingly dont know much about at all. Have some respect for those who do, rather than making yourself appear rude and ignorant.

lollipoprainbow · 27/08/2022 11:00

@Freedomfighters absolutely agree we do, I'm so bored of people burying their head in the sand and coming out with the usual name calling racist, Xenophobe crap all the time it's so predictable.

Fimofriend · 27/08/2022 11:01

But NHS would have collapsed a long time ago if not for the immigrant doctors and nurses.

Not if the population had remain relatively stable (as it had been) it wouldn't. Mass immigration adds to the problem. Unfortunately the government's main drive seems to be to keep pushing up GDP, with little thought to how it impacts, particularly on poorer people already here.

Freedomfighters · 27/08/2022 11:24

You can't then. I didn't think you could. Thanks for clearing that up.

Ooh I think if we didn't have so many people here the NHS wouldn't need as many staff

Fleetheart · 27/08/2022 11:38

I don’t think we should have uncontrolled immigration- but we should have controlled immigration. we need immigration, but we also need to ensure we make provision for all the schools, GPs, nurses, housing etc that that entails. If we don’t then we stir up a hornets nest of resentment. This government is doing nothing to deal with any of the above. It’s failing us all; never mind the refugees who need asylum. this problem will only get worse; so it needs real government plans. Not ridiculous Daily Mail pleasing superficial policies like Ruwanda.

Poster endorses neighbours right to inflict racist, xenophobic views on OP. I am intrugued as to why that is not clear. The immigration thing is a smoke screen abd derails the real issue here. This interaction is a much more damaging experience than dealing with a card carrying racist.

woodhill · 27/08/2022 12:19

The people who live here can't afford the housing and to have a family and it's rare they get given social housing, is it any wonder

Mass immigration isn't a smoke screen. It's the reason why there is not enough resources for everyone in the country. The reason why housing is a problem. Why you have to pay so much in-work benefits. Why the NHS is struggling. Why new roads have to be built.

But (any) Government love an influx of bodies as it's the only way to maintain GDP in a debt ridden and now high inflationary country.
