To hate the phrase "we are pregnant"...

.... I just can't stand jt. However supportive you are of your pregnant partner, as you don't have a human growing in you, you are, by definition; not pregnant!

How did this ridiculous phrase ever start?

OP posts:
BloodAndFire · 18/08/2022 12:37

At my antenatal class, one bloke said "we won't be having any pain relief in labour, we don't believe in it."

Jedsnewstar · 18/08/2022 12:39

The same people who insist men can get post natal depression.

GlitteryGreen · 18/08/2022 13:07

Yeah I agree completely, only one of the people in the couple is pregnant. It's a really weird thing to say.

LittleBearPad · 18/08/2022 13:11

Makes you wonder if they’ll also claim any birth injuries too “We had a fourth degree tear” Or so they only claim the nice bits

YouSetTheTone · 18/08/2022 13:48

I can’t stand it. ‘We are expecting a baby’ - perfectly fine.
Only ONE of you in that couple is pregnant though.

I expect it became trendy when appropriating women’s experiences did. Only the cool ones though obv. As pp have pointed out there’s no appropriation of 4th degree tears, prolapse, vulval varicose veins or such like.

’We are pregnant’ are often the same people who say ‘pregnant people’ and ‘parental leave’ instead of paternity/ maternity. Seems to me it’s about displacing the specific role of the women and bringing men into it under umbrella terms. This seems harmless until you realise, for example, that ‘maternity leave’ is something that covers women during pregnancy and the new born period for things that the male partner will not require legal protections for.

YABU

Get a grip

MaryShelley1818 · 18/08/2022 15:03

YAdefinitelyNBU!

Awful, cringey, definitely said by a certain type of couple trying far too hard to appear like they're oh so in love. Usually vloggers and instagrammers.

LadyEloise1 · 18/08/2022 15:03

I hate the phrase too.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 18/08/2022 15:27

Oh I hate this. My sister (who doesn’t have children) says it all the time about her friends: “So exciting, Sophie and James are pregnant” and it massively winds me up then too, though I’d look really petty if I objected. I think she thinks it’s somehow the inclusive/accepted phrasing, but it feels both twee and inaccurate to me, and a sidelining of women’s physical experience. Really grating.

catandcoffee · 18/08/2022 15:30

YANBU.

ChagSameachDoreen · 18/08/2022 15:35

I despise it.

Unless you are a lesbian couple who are pregnant at the same time.

LT2 · 18/08/2022 15:49

YANBU

I guess it's done so the other parent doesn't feel left out, which is stupid. It's still their child, carrying it or not! Only one of you is pregnant.

GoingOnce · 18/08/2022 15:51

I hate it too. It sets my teeth on edge in exactly the same way as hearing adults calling each other “babe”.

VickyEadieofThigh · 18/08/2022 15:51

It's twee and makes me cringe. YANBU.

Hate this statement.

Next time, tell him you hope he is avoiding all alcohol for the duration of 'his' pregnancy. The prick.

Totally agree…”we are having a baby” fine but “we are pregnant” NO

Adventurine · 18/08/2022 21:37

Yanbu

If the baby is going to come out your vagina (or sunroof), you are pregnant. If your contribution was the sperm that met the egg, you are not pregnant. You are the father. Not everything is about you!

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 18/08/2022 22:06

It's so twee. When the baby is born people who say this are the same ones say "we have welcomed our precious gift"...

VestaTilley · 18/08/2022 22:08

Agree. It’s cringeworthy bullshit. Only the woman is pregnant!

FirstFallopians · 18/08/2022 22:15

The last time I saw a thread about this it was much more contested!

I agree OP. There was one time DH referred to a time when “we” were pregnant with dc1. I actually snorted, and robustly explained that it made me want to kick him in the shins.

Someone upthread referred to feeling petty about being annoyed by it, but it isn’t. It minimises the impact on the woman mentally and physically by pretending it’s some kind of joint venture, like you’ll flip coins for who’s going to get the PGP or third degree tear.

Iced · 18/08/2022 22:25

Cringe!

Rachie1973 · 18/08/2022 22:30

Beaten only be the ‘we are only having gas and air’
