To hate the phrase "we are pregnant"...

.... I just can't stand jt. However supportive you are of your pregnant partner, as you don't have a human growing in you, you are, by definition; not pregnant!

How did this ridiculous phrase ever start?

Lives too short to be hating something so trivial, I’d personally just be happy for the couple.

DangerouslyBored · 18/08/2022 05:52

It’s awful. So twee. Said by a certain type of person / couple.

Did you both suffer with morning sickness? Are you both also going to give birth? I’m pregnant and have never felt the need to say ‘we’re pregnant’. We’re expecting a baby, sure, but DH is not pregnant.

Positivelypatient · 18/08/2022 05:54

Yes me too, can women have nothing to themselves!
I was talking to an older new father whilst they were chasing after their toddler and he said how he 'popped this one out' and I couldn't help but say 'you popped him out? Surely that was your wife' I felt a bit pedantic afterwards but still.

Anothernamechangeplease · 18/08/2022 05:55

It is very twee. I can't say it bothers me that much, but I do cringe a little when I hear it.

UseOfWeapons · 18/08/2022 06:12

Yuck.
Makes me feel a little nauseous.

EachandEveryone · 18/08/2022 06:18

Oh god this week ive had “we’ve been breatfeeding hourly its exhasting” “we were in labour for six hours we are so tired” i could go on.

Allinadayswork80 · 18/08/2022 06:22

Yes I agree, very twee and very annoying. “We are having a baby” fair enough but “we are pregnant” no WE are NOT!

KangarooKenny · 18/08/2022 06:23

Agree. It’s cringeworthy.

That's even more irritating imo!

Some people seem to seriously lack self awareness!!

Clymene · 18/08/2022 06:30

Yes it's dreadful

Delphinium20 · 18/08/2022 06:33

I HATE this phrase...always had. Never once used it and thankfully DH would never consider using it.

QuizzlyBears · 18/08/2022 06:40

This is a real pet hate of mine!

TFMinx · 18/08/2022 06:54

No! No WE are not pregnant, unless both parents are female and were successfully implanted at the same time!
I am currently pregnant with OUR 2nd child. It would give me the ick if DH started saying 'we', fortunately he knows better than this.

onelittlefrog · 18/08/2022 06:56

I wouldn't say it myself.

But I think it's just some people's way of saying they are doing it together and both parents are very much involved.

Not something that I could get upset over. There are worse scenarios for an unborn child than two parents trying their best to be on the same page and there for it, even if it is a bit 'twee'.

Vallmo47 · 18/08/2022 06:58

I agree OP. Soon worried husbands will be menstruating with their wives as well. 🤢

warmsuncoldwind · 18/08/2022 06:58

When they ask my husband what he does I answer we are accountants

Of course. I'm not saying there aren't much bigger potential issues with pregnancy...:

That's why i posted here to check whether IABU.... clearly there'd be no point starting a thread on a more important issue such as "AIBU to think that it's a bad thing that pregnant women are more at risk of abuse from their partners?"

Thank god it's not just me, makes me cringe. Would you ever get a couple saying "we are on our period" ?

balalake · 18/08/2022 07:33

Agree, not sure when it started.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 18/08/2022 07:36

Reminds me of the Borg in Star Trek.

Goes with all that 'love is one soul in two bodies' crap!

Lndnmummy · 18/08/2022 07:58

I agree. "WE are having a baby". But I
am the pregnant one. Otherwise do WE have stretch marks as well? We have c-section overhang? We have prolapse? We had a 3rd degree tear? No man, that was all ME
