Minimum Wage Minimum Effort

Do you agree?

It's got me thinking. YABU - don't agree. YANBU - agree.

What do you even mean?

Some minimum wage jobs are incredibly hard work.

Some people doing minimum wage jobs are people who have worked hard and got degrees.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/08/2022 21:51

🙄

ElegantAndWild · 16/08/2022 21:53

I mean: if you earn minimum wage is it fair enough to expend only minimum effort?

OP posts:
cheekychatta · 16/08/2022 21:53

Depends on what job you do . If you are caring for others then yes . But in a job where people don't pull their weight or you are treated badly then no . For a minimum wage I don't bust a gut no way .

Yousee · 16/08/2022 21:53

Is the question "do you agree that this is what happens" or is it "you think it is morally acceptable that this is what happens"?

Hellocatshome · 16/08/2022 21:55

Do you mean as in how much people are bothered about doing a good job if they are only paid minimum wage? If so I think that depends more on personality than the amount of money. Some people put their heart and soul and blood, sweat and tears into minimum wage jobs whilst other people phone it in and are paid a lot more.

DelilahBucket · 16/08/2022 21:55

Absolutely not acceptable to make a minimum effort and those that have that attitude will not get very far in life at all.

Yousee · 16/08/2022 21:55

Cross post.
No, I don't think minimum effort is acceptable.
I also don't think it's acceptable that people whose jobs require actual training and skills end up on the minimum wage.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 16/08/2022 21:55

It’s not really the way to get on, is it?

OTOH some employers want the noon on a stick, free overtime and heart attacks from their euphemistically named “entry level” staff.

So it depends whether you mean “Skive folks!” Or “Oace yourself and don’t be a mug.”

ElegantAndWild · 16/08/2022 21:57

Sorry, thought it was a well known phrase. I didn't mean to confuse you all. It's a stance. If an employer pays minimum wage they shouldn't expect more than minimum effort.

BeyondMyWits · 16/08/2022 21:57

I work in a job that is usually minimum wage plus uplift for training. 50p per hour more.

But in April min wage has often gone past my wage with uplift, so until we get a "pay rise" ... every June... I am on min wage despite the training... so I do the minimum, pretty much out of spite.

XenoBitch · 16/08/2022 21:57

You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

carefullycourageous · 16/08/2022 21:58

There has been a lot of stuff about this recently - one term is 'quiet quitting' where people do not feel valued and so do the minimum.

If I am honest, I think it is fair enough. You are employed to do a certain job. You do it. You don't have to go over and above unless the job/environment/team/boss gives a reason to. I personally am not doing it - but if I was only paid £9.50, had a shit zero hours contract, they messed me about with shifts etc. I would not bend over backwards to do extra.

The difficulty is many important roles - especially in care - are paying NMW for something that is actually very important. Our economy is really quite fucked up.

hotfroth · 16/08/2022 21:58

What a nasty thread.

Everyone has a different definition of minimum effort.

it's like that crap term going round at the mo - is it quiet resignation - where people actually, you know, do their jobs. The wrong phrase entirely.

carefullycourageous · 16/08/2022 22:00

I am going to model myself on our current PM going forwards, he is minimum effort for a pretty large salary the lazy bastard

ElegantAndWild · 16/08/2022 22:02

@carefullycourageous yes hahaha, didn't he hold a meeting with no outcome at all the other day? That's quiet quitting on a whole new level.

Let's hope not as most childcare workers are on minimum wage

sst1234 · 16/08/2022 22:03

Depends on if you want to progress.

It was good of him to show up though, good to see him putting the hours in for us all. Twat.

Fucking Truss talking about 'graft' I see - the Tories need to stop judging the rest of us by their own idle standards!

WheresTheLambSauce · 16/08/2022 22:05

Some jobs, sure. But a lot of minimum-wage workers are in the care industry, so a slip in standards doesn't hurt them - it hurts the (often vulnerable) people they're caring for. I've seen it enough times in my job, and it breaks my heart.

Groundhogliving22 · 16/08/2022 22:05

I work ridiculously hard and always strive to go above and beyond for my employer however my roles are classed as minimum wages roles.. the role itself is potentially dangerous & it is very very stressful.

DenholmElliot1 · 16/08/2022 22:07

I get paid twice as much as minimum wage (now) and I've only ever done just enough work to not get sacked.

More people should try it, it's liberating.

well said 👏

kegofcoffee · 16/08/2022 22:10

Unfortunately it's the other way around.

The person I know who works the hardest is on around £10ph. They are deemed low-skilled and easily replacement, so treated with little respect and worked into the ground.

The person I know who works the least hardest is on over £250k a year. They are deemed high-skilled and hard to replace, so treated with respect and cut some slack.

I don't agree with it, but that's what I see.
