"Minimum Effort" as in do the role as described and only hours required, or the bare minimum you think you can get away with and an attitude to match. The former will see you a regular pay packet but little progression, the latter probably dismissed.

I work ridiculously hard and always strive to go above and beyond for my employer however my roles are classed as minimum wages roles.. the role itself is potentially dangerous & it is very very stressful.

And you do this for the minimum wage ? A life threatening job ? No way would I put my life on the line for a minimum wage .

No. The more senior I’ve gotten the more I’ve realised that the less you’re paid, the least flexibility and the greatest presenteeism is expected of you, despite these sorts of roles - caring, retail etc - often being marketed as ideal for people (parents) who need flexibility.

Whereas I’m well paid and as long as I don’t have meetings or deadlines I can take a 90 minute lunch break to go to the gym if it suits me, start late, finish early, work late afternoon evening or early morning or just generally suit myself.

I get paid twice as much as minimum wage (now) and I've only ever done just enough work to not get sacked.

More people should try it, it's liberating.

Some people can get away with it as they don't work harder just smarter they delegate.

It's high time employers realised to get good results they need to pay more for it

Thankfully I've never had to work for NMW but I couldn't blame someone for not giving their all if they're paid so low

I was on a touch more than minimum wage (Band 1 NHS), and was still expected to make maximum effort.

The last job I had was minimum wage. With my qualifications I can earn 50k, but I took this job as it was all I could get to fit round my children. I must admit I didn’t bust a gut.

The harder you work others will notice and slack off . Just do no more or less than you have to and go under the radar . I've seen slackers get promoted because their face fitted and hard loyal workers treated like dirt and scapegoated .

It's not it's working smarter not hard . These employers don't give a damn about their staff and see them as numbers that can be replaced

I think that whilst it's lovely to go over and above in your job, if everyone did this then employers would get away with paying peanuts. In schools TAs notoriously go the extra mile, do unpaid overtime, stay for extras to help out the kids and teachers, come in early, stay on days they're not paid for. But actually it just means that schools take advantage of them and other stuff become resentful because it shows them up.

I think that people have realised that some minimum wage jobs are way harder than others. Best example I can think of - Really busy McDonalds in city centre packed out on a Saturday afternoon v a tiny cafe serving just tea and cake to a few customers at a time.
I think unfair pressures at work demotivate and result in people doing as little as possible. Not necessarily wages.

It definitely does happen, it shouldn't but it does. If a jobs worth doing, it's worth doing well. I'm on minimum wage in the hospitality business but I still put as much effort in as possible at work (it would soon be picked up if I didn't to be honest because we are constantly understaffed), I do think however certain customers at my work may think we see putting in minimum effort because they don't seem to see everything else we may be doing (which is fair enough actually - you probably don't expect your waitress to be the one making your drinks, desserts and doing pot wash as well as serving you).

The trouble is, the minimum wage is a breadline wage.

I mean, we’re in a recession right? There will be 100s of applicants for a minimum wage role, it’s an employer’s market. There will be people who put in maximum effort for a minimum wage role and do sn excellent job. If you’re dossing and doing F all, don’t be surprised if you get passed over for opportunities/promotions for those that are better than you, or worst case if you eventually just get sacked/made redundant because they don’t need you. It’s your life.

Cor, I wish - our workload went right up when we came home and has not dropped off yet (delayed activity so reprofiled/extended projects added to new projects = us tearing our hair out).

I think people who say this sort of thing know very little about work.
