To think it's not unusual for a woman to have size 42+ feet ...

... and yet so many shoe ranges only go up to a size 41! Why is that? I've had problems buying shoes ever since my early teens. I rarely own more than 2 pairs at any one time, because finding shoes that I like, and which fit, is so difficult. If size 42 (or more) isn't unusual, then there must be a big untapped market out there.

I didn't realise women could wear a size 8!

My mum was 6 foot and wore size 9s and a fairly wide fitting. She would have been 85 now.

she had to go to fairly specialist shops in london for her shoes. A few stores like long tall sallys would sell a reasonable selection.

a lot of places she shopped for shoes she would be offered insensible, impractical high heals. That was all she could get when she was younger in 50s. She often used to have to buy mens flat shoes when younger.

It took her years to realise why she couldn’t get sensible shoes in her sizes, her epiphany came one day in a shop in the 60s when she sat next to a man trying on some knee high high heel boots to go with his mini skirt. I kid you not…Stravers shoes are one such company whose large size shoes for “women” were made for, what was in those days called, transvestite women,

when I was young and shopping with her, she’d tell the shop assistance “I do not want the sort of shoes a transvestite wears”. 😱🤷🏼‍♀️ . I guess those type of shoes weren’t suitable for being a teacher and on her feet most of the day 🤣🤣

im a size 8. Internet shopping was a relief for me as I suddenly i had access to trawl easily through loads of shops to get shoes that fit. Before the days of internet I trip round all the shoes shops in a town and not find one pair to fit- I could pre kids fit into a generous 7. Back in even hte 80s most shop went to size 6-even 7s was scarce. I don’t know how many times I was to,d “we don’t go up to THAT size “ like I was a freak. I have always been bemused with women with large shoe collections…for most of my life I’d only have maybe 1 pair trainers, one flat, one heal, ankle boots and walking boots plus slippers- if I could get replacements for those when they wore out I considered it good luck.

happy days since the internet- I could buy shoes fairly easily…but old habits die hard and I haven’t bought any new shoes since 2018 🤣🤣🤣

MyneighbourisTotoro · 16/08/2022 20:35

I wouldn’t say it’s unusual but I don’t think it’s as common as the smaller sizes, most of my family and friends are between a 4-6.
I only have one family member who is a 7 and I know a couple of people who are a 3.
I do think it’s ridiculous that shops don’t cater for all sizes though! I think my daughter will end up wearing a 7 or larger as she is already so tall.

I don't know anyone with feet larger than a 7. I'm 5ft 8 and a size 6, my SIL is 5ft 11 and a size 5!

I suspect that an increase in larger female style shoes may be the only benefit of the trans movement!

noooo!

see my earlier comment about my poor mum trying to get sensible shoes in the 1960s….it most certainly was not beneficially to her

mrsDracoMalfoy · 16/08/2022 20:37

Have you tried Deichmann. Their footwear is amazing. Im a size 8 and wide feet. They fit perfect.
And they go up to a 44.

PicturesOfLily · 16/08/2022 20:42

It’s also annoying that all socks seem to come in size 4-7 so I wear through the backs as the heel isn’t in the right place!

I have one foot size 42, the other size 43. I wear clown shoes.

On the positive side, I don't blow over in the wind and I've probably saved myself a small fortune not being able to buy all the lovely shoes.

My teenage sons both have size 11 feet so I finally have the smallest feet in the house.

Oh god, don’t get too cosy about your small feet

your genes may pass onto them and then you’ll be mortgaging the house to buy them shoes

I’m 5 7” and take 42

Eldest DS 62” and size 13
youngest DS 6 6” and size 15

omg it was horrendous just finding shoes let alone paying for them😱🤯
youngestDs shoes were rumoured to be a backup safety life raft in emergencies in school 🤣🤣🤣. His girlfriends could literally stand both feet in them

thankfully they’re in their 20smnow and shoe shopping is not my problem 😳☺️

I’ve switched to nice mens socks years ago. Luckily mens socks can come in all sorts of nice patterns and colours. Sporting a nice pair of seals at ones today with foxes on.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 16/08/2022 19:51

How didn't you realise that?

To be fair, there are plenty of shoe selling shops that don't seem to realise it either.

littleducks · 16/08/2022 20:46

So nice to know it's not just me.

Sizes are definitely increasing in my local deichmann boys I have to get my 8 year olds (size 4) from the teen boy section. Whereas my 13 year old teenage boy was wearing size 12s so needed men's section.

Converse definitely go up to at least a 9, ASOS have them if your DD is still after some. (Not suggesting she has to have the pink btw!)

Yep, I was thinking this..don’t they do design your own? My son with size 15 mens boght some for Xmas that he “designed” based on what colours he wanted.

Yes! I have been known to ask for a knife and some bandages.

Tell the, you’re not one of the ugly sisters 🤷🏼‍♀️

RewildingAmbridge · 16/08/2022 20:50

I am a 40/41 seasalt do some nice and comfortable sandals up to size 42 which is labelled 8, their 41s are labelled 7.5

Talipesmum · 16/08/2022 20:51

Couldn’t find much data on shoe size distribution but this seems to suggest that it’s not THAT unusual these days. And since the average UK shoe size has changed from a 4 in the 1970s to a 6 now (apparently) it seems pretty likely that two sizes up from the “average” size isn’t that unusual.

I’m a 42 but that’s because they’re v wide - I think I’m really a 7.5 G. So all the mens sizes do fit me pretty well and I have some mens shoes, but they’re often a lot heavier and clumpier which - given I’m already getting them in a large size - is annoying.

I wonder where transwomen buy their shoes? Surely having size 42 or 43 must be pretty usual among transwomen?

As I said to others, see my post later on and my mothers issues in the 60s

I didn't realise women could wear a size 8!

Why not? Surely you've seen this size all the time when looking at shoes? 🤔

What a strange comment!
Why would they not be able to wear size 8 , 9 10 or what ever size fits .

I have to wear safety shoes for work so always go for men's as they tend to be wider and a better fit size 7 or sometimes and 8 however if I want to wear dress lady there is not a Prayer I will get into a size 8

FuzzyPuffling · 16/08/2022 21:00

Re all the posts about transwomen ( because it's irritating me). Bio men have different shaped feet to bio women- longer, wider, deeper. Shoes that fit transwomen won't fit women.

Catchphrasewannabe · 16/08/2022 21:02

www.mokkahshoes.co.uk/ is worth a look - nice founder story too.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2022 21:04

It's a lot better than it was as women are getting a lot taller. When I was a teenager, I almost never saw a woman taller than me, but now I feel quite average height at 5'7.

I'm a 41 foot so join you all in the bugbear that no-one can agree what UK size this equates to with no consistency between brands and what turns up when you shop online doesn't even match what's on the website.

But I do see a lot of size 42s when looking for my 41s, usually in M&S (they also do wide fit) and also my new favourite, www.moshulu.co.uk/ - I got some great boots from them in the sale earlier this year.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2022 21:06

But my biggest bugbear with the shoes in M&S is that they put the small sizes on the top shelves and the large sizes on the bottom shelves.

So I'm having to fold my long legs down to the floor to get them off the bottom and when I stand up I see a 5 foot nothing woman jumping up to get her size 3s off the shelf above her head, which of course I pass down to her and we have a laugh about how stupid they are to have not realised the problem this causes.

On average, yes, but not all bio women - my feet are very typically “male” in width and depth. Feet are much more on a spectrum than other “bio” features that divide us much more clearly!

toffeechai · 16/08/2022 21:08

I’ve found Next really good for bigger shoes.

This thread has variously made me feel both less alone and also like a freaky foot giant

Yes, you're right. I'm sorry to be so binary about feet. I think I was getting over- annoyed by the notion that at long last I could wear nice, well fitting shoes because transwomen!

FatBettyintheCoop · 16/08/2022 21:11

I'm 5'2" and wear size 8 shoes.
I have big hands too but a slightly smaller than average size head so can wear kids hats. My best friend at school was the same height as me but with tiny hands and size 3 feet. I probably looked odd. 🤷🏻‍♀️

German websites are good for bigger sized women's shoes. I like Alegria and Waldlaufer shoes, but I've always gone for comfort.

Changenameobviousreasons · 16/08/2022 21:11

This winds me up as well - and the fact hat a mens 43 and a ladies are different sizes. Also that this has only changed in in the past 15 years. I have flippers and have done since I was in primary school (size 5 by year 2 and size 9 by age 11) I've now settled at a men's 44.5 in most brands however my feet are wide with Tailors bunions due to years of ill Fitting shoes! I have mens skechers flip flops, mizuno wave rider trainers (the only ones I cand wear!) buffalo boots and demonia platforms. I've totally given up with anything else!!
