To absolutely dread winter

Notagoodtime · 16/08/2022 08:14

I love this time of year. My kids are so much easier to entertain with paddling pools, trips to beach and picnics. We eat outside and have so much time outdoors. No house to heat so energy bills lower too.
I’m just dreading the winter months where the kids seem to pick up every germ that’s going. It’s dark at 4:30 and I find it so much harder to get up on dark mornings. I have so much more energy in the summer.

Moving to a warmer country is not an option so Any suggestions on how to embrace the winter months! I feel a bit panicky just thinking about the winter months.

I live winter. We get snowy cold winters and hot Mediterranean summers. So I feel like it’s best or both and I’m ready for winter after a hot summer and vis versa.
We are lucky that in winter it’s more dry crisp cold, so winter layers and your rarely cold. It rarely rains in winter.

That sounds good - where are you in the world?

I love Autumn but how do all of you hot chocolate/crumble/roast/pudding lovers not put on loads of weight? Especially if all you’re doing is snuggling in front of the fire from September onwards.

All those very active walks kicking the leaves and healthy soups offset all the higher calorie stuff Wink

SirChenjins · 18/08/2022 20:55

Yeah… course they do 😂 There’s no amount of leaf kicking in the peeing rain and rolling in the mud that offsets the stews, hot chocs and crumbles that are eaten by some MNetters in winter 🤥

SpiderinaWingMirror · 18/08/2022 20:58

Take vitamin D.
I literally remind myself that it starts getting lighter before Christmas. And its light when I finish work before the end of February.

Caspianberg · 18/08/2022 21:11

@SirChenjins - southern alps. We don’t wear puddle suits and kick wet leaves here in winter. It’s more ski, mulled wine and goulash.

I could cope with that. It’s the endless damp, depressing weather and months of darkness, interspersed with some snow days when the country seems to grind to a standstill. Walking the dog in the peeing rain on pavements on the end of a lead in the dark because you can’t see where the damn thing is to let it off and run around isn’t much fun either.

Im astounded that you dog lovers ate complaining about the mud etc.

you knew it was part of the parcel! Or you thought about those lovely puppies sitting lovingly in their baskets only requiring walks on dry days

Don't be ridiculous.

There's a big difference between walking in the rain and trudging through a swamp of mud. I'm astounded you can't see that.

I love muddy paw prints! I've never felt it was a chore to clean them up.

But I also love winter and can see from the posts here that perhaps I'm just a bit weird!

It’s getting the mud out of dog’s fur that I struggle with as it doesn’t brush out of her coat, it has to be washed out or picked gently out by hand. Her cost is like Velcro.

And yes the scraping of wellies and all the extra laundry are time consuming. A dog walk in mud results in at least 30 minutes work when I get home. And with energy prices rocketing all the laundering of her towels is going to impact.

MrsDThomas · 19/08/2022 09:10

@SoupDragon i can clearly see it as i live on a smallholding. 1000ft above sea level so mud and wind and rain and snow is a massive part of my winter. Hence why i love it.

there is nothing ridiculous about my comment.

it obviously rings true here

Nope. Your comment was completely ridiculous.

Walking through a swamp of mud isn't the same as walking in rain. Also, and this may come as a shock to you, it is still possible to absolutely hate something and still do it anyway because you have to.

i can probably find loads of photos of my dog knee deep in mud if you like.

MrsDThomas · 19/08/2022 09:28

I have zero interest in seeing photog your dog.

Because you know you've made an incorrect statement.

SoupDragon · 19/08/2022 09:36

My dog gets walked whatever the weather because I'm not an idiot. Your "cute puppies lounging in a basket only requiring dry walks" is utter nonsense.

MrsDThomas · 19/08/2022 09:38

What is bothering you? This thread isn’t just about you and your dog. Its about every poster

you may like the mud, there are plenty of people who don’t. And some have said they don’t like it.

MrsDThomas · 19/08/2022 09:39

and there is no correct nor incorrect statement. (Shit, of course, its Mumsnet!)

its a comment which obviously you are tetchy about

Fluffygreenslippers · 19/08/2022 09:41

No I can’t wait til the clocks go back and I don’t have to listen to neighbours chavvy screeching kids outside. I hope we have a freezing cold, wet winter.

PPop · 19/08/2022 09:42

I just admit I utterly hate summer and being a sweaty mess, I love blankets and getting cozy in the house! Maybe keeping them busy with decorating for halloween and then decorating for Christmas? Pumpkin picking is always a fun day out! I feel there is much to enjoy! I prefer walking the dogs in winter too!

You targeted a comment at dog owners and asked a question. A dog owner answered in a way that doesn't suit your agenda. That doesn't mean they're taking your comments personally. They're just telling you you're wrong.

MrsDThomas · 19/08/2022 09:45

that person (male or female) is taking it personally

Lookingforrecommendations · 19/08/2022 09:52

I think I just try to embrace the right now, whatever season you're in. I do get season fatigue, so I prefer the spring and autumn months as they are generally milder than the extremes we get on winter and summer.
Summer is tiring, body clocks find it hard to wind down so I'm always tired, then there's the heat, and sweat, and feeling like you always have to be doing something evening late on into the evening.
I like winter because it feels like a type of hibernation, yes busy with school and after school activities, but I love settling in for the evening with my knitting and a cuppa.
But come January/February I am ready for the season to change, very grateful to live in a country where the seasons do change and I'm not living in a permanent summer environment.

No-one is taking it personally - just pointing out you’re talking through your arse. I’m one of the people to whom you directed your stupid comment about cute puppies - I’m not even going to dignify it with a response because others have dealt with it brilliantly already. Try Twitter if you’re looking for a fight or to have a snarky dig, you’ll find your tribe on there.
