To absolutely dread winter

Notagoodtime · 16/08/2022 08:14

I love this time of year. My kids are so much easier to entertain with paddling pools, trips to beach and picnics. We eat outside and have so much time outdoors. No house to heat so energy bills lower too.
I’m just dreading the winter months where the kids seem to pick up every germ that’s going. It’s dark at 4:30 and I find it so much harder to get up on dark mornings. I have so much more energy in the summer.

Moving to a warmer country is not an option so Any suggestions on how to embrace the winter months! I feel a bit panicky just thinking about the winter months.

I wear loose clothing, in natural fives and I sweat buckets. And if they are too loose my thighs rub together and sweat and chaff. And then I have sore, pimply, spotty skin. Lovely!

And the feeling of sun cream on my skin is horrid.

I’d much rather put layers of clothes on and scrape a car at 7am, than have to constantly shower, apply deodorant, sun cream, etc.

You're sorted for the majority of the year in the U.K. then!

I love rain. The more rain the better,Yes i am insane but there is nothing better for me than wandering up the garden into my shed with a hot cuppa and sitting on my sofa in there listening to the rain bang down on the windows. Its my ultimate pleasure, bring it on! Long lazy summer days are ok but late summer going into full on autumn well you just cant beat it,

But what about the mud!?

i want to weep when it's time to walk my dog and everywhere is a swamp.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 17/08/2022 15:43

I love the summer so much too. Opening the curtains every day this summer and seeing a bright blue sky and golden sunshine has been wonderful. I hate the grey, miserable, dreary, damp days of winter. I do walk during daylight hours, I have a lovely, cosy home, but I really prefer summer. Life is just so much easier during the summer months.

MissyB1 · 17/08/2022 15:53

I have thoroughly enjoyed this summer and will be really sad when it ends. I’m not good in winter, I literally try and survive it. Oh and yes all that “snuggle /hot chocolate / films” bollocks bores the arse off me!

my tips
Exercise- I go to the gym/ swimming pool/Pilates class. I am lucky I can afford this.
Books - if I have to be indoors I might as well engage my brain with something constructive.
Cook new recipes, might as well cheer ourselves up with food.
Plan next summer’s holiday!!

I love walking in rain and mud. I just wear walking boots. I like the squelching! I nearly always fall over too and end up covered in mud! Clothes go in washing machine. Boots get brushed off when dry. Or wellies if you want less upkeep.

MoodyTwo · 17/08/2022 15:58

Winter is the time to snuggle up on the sofa and have movie nights under the quilts , so crafts and colouring and lots and lots of baking ... I love winter

I also wear walking boots. They get caked in mud and soooo heavy! Plus there is the slipping about which hurts my back.

plus the dog.

SoupDragon · 17/08/2022 16:02

I guess, on the whole, the uk Has weather for everyone.

Oh the dog! Yes having to clean the dog after every walk aaarrgh!! 😱

Suetwo · 17/08/2022 16:28

It wouldn't be so bad if we got a few months of snow and ice and bright sunshine. There's nothing better than walking through a snowy landscape with the sun glinting off the puddles (like Monet's field with a crow painting). But that's a Dickensian fantasy. In reality, it's just drizzle, mud and grey skies.

For me, the worst times of the year are July and August (when they are hot - don't mind them when they're cool or wet) and November to January. February is quite a nice month, since you can sense things changing.

Best months of the year are March, April and September.

ouch321 · 17/08/2022 16:34

This summer has been vile so thank goodness colder weather is on the way.

Now now don't spoil things by being all reasonable Wink

I love winter, I love being snowed in, dark nights where you can close the curtains.

Snowed in? Where do you live?

RockStarMartini · 17/08/2022 20:30

I love Autumn but how do all of you hot chocolate/crumble/roast/pudding lovers not put on loads of weight? Especially if all you’re doing is snuggling in front of the fire from September onwards.

Brieandcamembert · 17/08/2022 21:44

and the kitchen floor every time they come in from toilet breaks in the garden.

In the summer we only shut the doors off the kitchen and snug when it's night time or we are out. The rest of the time we have a completely indoor/ outdoor link. I love it so much. I saw leaves fallen in the garden today and genuinely felt sad.

SirChenjins · 17/08/2022 21:51

Hate winter with a passion. Months of darkness, damp cold weather, snow and ice making it difficult or impossible to get about, horrible commutes. I love the long days, coming home from work and still having a good few hours to get out into the countryside with the dog running about beside me and playing in the river, or gardening, or meeting friends, or any of the other things I enjoy doing outdoors. Winter is like living underground - grim, depressing, miserable. This year is going to be horrendous for many and I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone wants to live in the cold and dark for 4 or 5 months.

Suetwo · 17/08/2022 22:10

I'm not looking forward to the dinge and darkness, but my god I cannot wait for cooler air. I'm in Essex, and have felt sweaty and uncomfortable pretty much 24/7 since early July. These last six weeks have been vile. Never thought I'd experience heatstroke in Essex, but I did - vomitting, nearly passing out, etc. We are meant to be in a cool spell right now, but my partner is moaning about how humid it is - and I agree. Next week the heat is going to return. It's going to be 27 or 28. I don't think it has dipped below 25 for nearly two months. I can't bear it anymore. If I had the money, I would be on a plane to Iceland tomorrow.

SirChenjins · 17/08/2022 22:16

@Suetwo You don’t need to go to Iceland - a train journey up to Edinburgh will cost you a fraction of the price and you can ‘enjoy’ the temperatures of mid to late teens with rain that are forecast. House full of damp washing, muddy dog walks, cold mornings, eyeing up the on button on the central heating…and it’s only August.

I can actually go running in Autumn/Winter. I can’t manage it in the heat as it is too much. I love running in the rain!

TorviShieldMaiden · 18/08/2022 13:38

I’m the same way how to simmer lovers not put on weight with all the ice cream and cold beers? 😄

Furries · 18/08/2022 14:08

I’m definitely a summer person, hate it when autumn/winter are around the corner. Although I’m not a fan of all the “snuggling/hot chocolate” sentiments on here, I actually really liked these two threads from last year - gave me a few ideas of how to try to enjoy some of it.

Don't eat or drink to excess? It's really easy.

MissyB1 · 18/08/2022 14:22

@Furries thanks for those links, some useful tips on those.
Can anyone recommend a good autumn scented candle?
