To absolutely dread winter

I love this time of year. My kids are so much easier to entertain with paddling pools, trips to beach and picnics. We eat outside and have so much time outdoors. No house to heat so energy bills lower too.
I’m just dreading the winter months where the kids seem to pick up every germ that’s going. It’s dark at 4:30 and I find it so much harder to get up on dark mornings. I have so much more energy in the summer.

Moving to a warmer country is not an option so Any suggestions on how to embrace the winter months! I feel a bit panicky just thinking about the winter months.

I dream of layers and layers of snow. The world looks and sounds so beautiful.

Yeah but honestly how often is actually like that? I agree but it's mostly grey and miserable

I live in Scotland - East Coast. That's just what it looks like when I snows here! Until it's been down a few days then it starts to get yucky...don't have to go far for the beauty though!

This was Jan 2021.

I hate the dark of winter. We've had mild winters and I hope that carries on.
It would make it better if they didn't mess around with the clocks.
I always try to get out in the day as getting out in some daylight helps a lot.
Then I give in and try to embrace all the homely blankets on the sofa, reading cosy books, soup on the stove, cake in the oven, movie nights and game nights stuff.

The people living in the far north of Scotland wouldn't agree with you about "messing around with the clocks" it makes a massive positive difference up there.

That said I get on with it. I don’t get the drama over winter, dress appropriately and carry on as normal

Which would be some impressive stoic grit if you live in Aberdeen but if you are on the south coast telling people how to suck eggs and cope with token gesture you call winter, it's a bit of a joke.

Not quite Aberdeen, but I have Scottish roots. I currently reside in Yorkshire, not known for its particularly mild climate (although granted not as cold as Scotland).

I go on holiday to Scotland in the winter though. And still go outside.

I find hot weather far more uncomfortable- the sweating alone the last few weeks has been awful.

TorviShieldMaiden · 16/08/2022 18:07

Oh the endless sun cream application. I’m pale and so are my dc. I hate the feel of it and so do they. And it’s constantly to be applied (even all day stuff doesn’t last for us).

and I’ve stained some really nice clothes with sun cream this summer.

userxx · 16/08/2022 18:08

Hate winter with a passion, it's just so frickin wet in the north of England. I find it incredibly boring too, I love being outdoors with my friends enjoying the sunshine.

plantseverywhere · 16/08/2022 18:24

I like autumn but I feel a bit sad about it coming this year. I love may and June especially but July and august can be too hot for me. I do really love rainy days where you can be cosy inside but I also don’t have kids to entertain!

Usuallg I hate Christmas but I’m looking forward to it this year. January and February can get to fuck though.

StoneofDestiny · 16/08/2022 18:30

I prefer Spring - you know the months ahead will be light and bright and you can throw open your windows again. I don't enjoy summer anymore with the 30-40 degrees we have had - unbearable. I don't like the early darkness of winter - makes the day too short.

countrygirl99 · 16/08/2022 18:39

Crisp clear winter days are lovely but we only get a few and they always seem to be mid week when I am working. I hate that I only get to see my horse or walk the dogs in daylight at the weekend when it always seems to be passing down or foggy. I hate that I'm trying to fit so much outdoor stuff into the few hours st thr weekend when it isn't dark, pissing down or foggy. I hate that the dogs need cleaning and drying off after every walk and ittakeshalf an hour to scrape the mud off my horse before I can ride. I loath being indoors when I'm not working. The cold doesn't bother me, I can wrap up for that if it's dry but wet and windy/foggy British winters are grotty fun sponges.

Mimilamore · 16/08/2022 20:07

HATE winter!! My mood gradually deteriorates between Oct-Dec. hate Xmas and wish it would F**k off. January I breath a sigh of relief and start ticking off the days until the clocks change end of March.

Those talking about hot chocolate, board games and crunchy leaves..... the leaves are usually soggy from the rain, board games lead to rows and accusations of cheating, they can never agree on what to play etc etc. Nope, winter can do one!

This completely and utterly

DrCoconut · 16/08/2022 21:01

I bet that people who just love winter don't have to put multiple stifling layers on and go out to scrape ice off the car at 7am in the dark ready for the school run and work. How can anyone seriously find this easier than just putting on light clothes and sandals, getting in the car and going?! What else do I dislike about winter? Cold, dark, grey. I hate ugly, frumpy winter clothes that make me itch and look bigger than I am too. And as for the kids. They always sleep better in summer and behave better too. I'm guessing it's being able to get out and run around and generally mood uplifting stuff. Someone on here once suggested that I don't have the right positive attitude because I wouldn't have it that going to the park at 6pm in December, in lashing rain with a torch (seriously) and waterproofs and icicles hanging off the kids' noses is just as good as going in a week like this has been. Nonsense. Then there's the fact that DS2 uses his inhalers less when it's warm (they make him hyper). And vitamin D for me. I don't absorb properly via my gut and I always feel so much better in summer. I'm just peaking now I think and I want it to last as long as possible. Most of my best memories are of things that happened in summer, it's just a happier time somehow. Let's not mention the coming heating bills...

AliceW89 · 16/08/2022 21:18

I agree. I’ve always loved summer and could quite happily never see winter again. Now I have a toddler those feelings have increased exponentially. Just being able to sit outside and let him crack on playing has been bliss. He is so much better at entertaining himself outside then inside. Sure, you can go outside over winter (and we most certainly will do it I want my house to still be standing by March)…but it’s just so much easier in the summer months!

Yes I have to go and scrape the car at 7am and do school runs and go to work. Infinitely better than having no air con, sweating, sticking to the seat. In. My. Opinion.

I also have a vitamin d deficiency interestingly and struggle to absorb it BUT...

I and the DC sleep better in winter, they're calmer and happier, I prefer the way the world looks and feels, like not having to wear revealing clothes or expose my body in any way or wear suncream. Winter is a happier time for me.

It's just preference innit?

Sunnysideup999 · 16/08/2022 21:25

i love spring and autumn
this summer has been horrendous with the stifling heat - I sweat just sitting outside - gross.
winter I hate the rain and the dark and the mud. And how it take so long to leave the house with coats and boots and gloves and hats and scarves etc
i do love a glass of red wine by the fire though on a frosty day.

Hbh17 · 16/08/2022 21:25

It's not the temperature that's the issue in winter so much as the lack of light. December is therefore the worst month of the year, and I wish we could just go straight from November to January.

countrygirl99 · 16/08/2022 21:26

Wearing revealing clothes isn't compulsory whatever the weather. Loose covering clothes are often cooler anyway.

MrsDThomas · 16/08/2022 21:45

Absolutely loathe summer. Especially when its been like it is. I love being outside walking, exercising etc but when its too hot i can’t do that.

i prefer running in wind and rain. And walking. Local areas are quiet and clean.

i love being cosy with my blankets candles and fire.

dockspider · 16/08/2022 22:31

I and the DC sleep better in winter Ditto, and I thought this was quite normal from various chats I’ve had; it makes sense that we would sleep more/more soundly in the winter when there is less light.

I actually love scraping ice off the car, in the dark. I love the feeling of the cold air in my nose and throat. Different folks and all that.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 16/08/2022 23:07

I love Autumn and Spring, lovely warm sunny with coolness and love dressing in my winter clothes. Loved the heat when younger but now older dislike it a lot. Guess this winter will be hard also so hope is mild as bills be so expensive. I do not like the dark early though as bright here til 11 pm at night in west of Ireland which is great for getting out if have to walk late. Years flying by so fast and seasons getting all mixed up so just taking each day as it comes.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 16/08/2022 23:08

Meant to say bright here til 11pm nearly in summer which is great. Can see it getting darker earlier now though.

The worst thing about winter is Mumsnet blasting you with this nonsense about wrapping the kids up and embracing the wet days and all hail the puddlesuit.

I hope anyone who posts that is trapped in their house by a giant puddlesuit.

😂

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 17/08/2022 08:46

I absolutely hate winter. Last night I walked the dog in the pouring rain in wellies and a coat and thought "fucking hell this will be every day soon". And I feel so down today, seeing the cloudy, windy, drizzly weather.

I love the warm weather, kids in the pool, playing outside, it makes life so much easier!

You weren't relishing how "crisp" it was whilst looking forward to snuggling in front of your roaring fire with a hot chocolate?

SoupDragon · 17/08/2022 13:13

I'm dreading it too. The cold, the rain, the mud on dog walks (oh the mud!).

i feel my mood start to plummet around mid September. I'm hoping all the lovely sun we've had this summer will see me through though!

lollipoprainbow · 17/08/2022 13:14

@CloudPop 😂😂 I adore autumn/winter but some of the descriptions are so cliche. Roasts, stews, crumbles, home made soups, blankets, roaring fires, hot chocolate, fairy lights, etc. With the cost of living crisis coming in I'm not sure this will be the reality for lots of us.

TorviShieldMaiden · 17/08/2022 14:33

Wearing revealing clothes isn't compulsory whatever the weather. Loose covering clothes are often cooler anyway.

I wear loose clothing, in natural fives and I sweat buckets. And if they are too loose my thighs rub together and sweat and chaff. And then I have sore, pimply, spotty skin. Lovely!

And the feeling of sun cream on my skin is horrid.

I’d much rather put layers of clothes on and scrape a car at 7am, than have to constantly shower, apply deodorant, sun cream, etc.
