I used to buy them
All the time I hardly even see them
In the shop anymore do you still buy them

Take a Break is just like the magazine version of Jeremy Kyle, I can't believe Mumsnetters read it! (ducks to avoid the slings and arrows).

Occasionally buy Vanity Fair and The Lady. Used to get Psychologies on subscription but the content got more vapid so stopped. And I buy a cat magazine every month.

Vampirethriller · 16/08/2022 14:47

@ImJustMadAboutSaffron Ah but I'm not your average mner, I live on a council estate and I certainly don't earn six figures.. And I'm fatGrin
I got into the habit of reading Take a Break at uni because I liked the puzzles and I didn't like Cosmo etc telling me the way to being empowered was by being good at blow jobs, amongst other rubbish. I like The Lady too!

I work in magazine publishing. It's swings and roundabouts really. There's been massive competition from online, more so in some areas than others. There have also been huge hikes in the cost of printing, paper and distribution over the last few years, which is partly why magazines are so expensive. But on the flip side, desktop publishing means you can pretty much put out a magazine single-handed nowadays if you want to. I suspect that's why there are so many niche magazines about vintage tractors and so on these days.

We stopped selling them in our general store about a year ago as administering the range was no longer work it when compared to sales.

We still sell newspapers but that's going the same way, soon we'll cut to weekend only if the wholesaler will agree

TheTeddyBears · 16/08/2022 21:03

I bought some for going on holiday but hardly looked at them so I'll not be bothering from now on!

BuwchGochGota · 16/08/2022 21:09

I have subscriptions to Good Food and Gardener's World, but they are paid for with Tesco Clubcard vouchers. I enjoy reading them, but probably wouldn't bother if I didn't have the vouchers.

Sloth66 · 16/08/2022 21:14

We get Private Eye delivered

Davros · 16/08/2022 21:16

Private Eye for me too and I love my Radio Times

dottypotter · 17/08/2022 01:00

I don't buy any. Friend buys woman and woman's own and passes them onto me when she has finished with them. I wouldn't buy them though.

I have recently stopped buying a paper but like to read our free local ones.

astorsback · 17/08/2022 01:18

I used to try them all but since the 2010s theyve been very poor value in terms of weak content, poor writing, numerous adverts etc. so i hardly bother now.

jennyofthenorth · 17/08/2022 01:57

No! they got too expensive and alot of the good ones are gone. I buy alot of them at the op shops though

Sagealicious · 17/08/2022 03:41

I still buy them. I've tried reading them online but it's just not the same. It's the same with books even though I have a Kindle and use it a lot there's nothing like curling up with a good book or magazine.

toffeechai · 17/08/2022 04:53

I used to love magazines but now the only thing I bother with is the Christmas Radio Times.

hattie43 · 17/08/2022 08:45

I'm a magazine junkie and buy loads . Platinum, Red, Country Homes and Interiors , Good Housekeeping , Physiologies,

I find them quite motivational.

leccybill · 18/08/2022 01:28

A fellow hotel guest passed me Woman and OK on holiday last week. Woman is basically Loose Women in print. OK is celebs I've never heard of and adverts. Surely they won't last much longer.

thebestmom · 21/08/2022 15:19

No. only online or ebooks.

mamabear715 · 21/08/2022 17:14

No. Gave them up a long time ago, with the exception of, like a previous poster, the low cost interiors mags. Then they got disappointing too. No newspapers except Metro when I'm travelling, for the crossword!
I don't like reading them online either.

Notthecarwashagain · 21/08/2022 17:38

I get a couple delivered that I ordered on the 6 issues for £6 offers.
Woman and Home, and Homestyle (I think)

Honestly, I mainly like them for the smell 😳

Crikeyalmighty · 21/08/2022 17:39

I used to love 'Eve' anyone else besides me remember it???

JustSortYoursefOut · 21/08/2022 17:42

I don't buy magazines - I used to get Take A Break and Chat, but they're full of adverts, and the stories are always the same kind of topic - my husband cheated on me, my mum beat me, etc. I buy puzzle books instead

NovaDeltas · 21/08/2022 17:43

I suspect only old people do now.

Tibtab · 21/08/2022 17:45

I read them on my Libby app through my local library. Haven’t bought a physical copy in years!

TPL · 21/08/2022 17:56

I have a Heat subscription. It is not bad value at just over a quid a week.

All the other magazines I have previously subscribed to have folded - Instyle, Glamour, Marie Claire. I don't think Heat has long left now either.

mamabear715 · 21/08/2022 19:11

I do remember Eve.. didn't last too long, as far as I remember? :-(

Greenpolkadot · 21/08/2022 22:23

Yes I buy them regularly.
Mostly Prima Good Food Good housekeeping ,that sort of type
I especially love the Christmas issues
