I used to buy them
All the time I hardly even see them
In the shop anymore do you still buy them

I read them digitally - I use the Libby app (free with a library card) which has 1000s - I’m addicted to interior design mags.

Dotjones · 16/08/2022 10:10

Rarely buy them but read them all the time for free on PressReader app using my library card login. Also there's a specialist magazine I read who's digital archive is behind a paywall, but the pages themselves are unencrypted, so once I knew the structure of the files I can read decades of material for free. (eg site.com/archive/aug2022/page73.jpg).

I read woman &home and good housekeeping and usually buy each month. I don't like reading magazines or books on devices as I like reading in bath etc ,

I pop my iPad mini into a clear ziplock bag for reading in the bath. Touchscreen still works.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 16/08/2022 10:20

Yes, i subscribe to a few and buy them on the silly offers £1 for 3 issues etc, and get good deals on 6 monthly subscriptions which i have on and off. I like a physical magazine, i hated readily it just didn’t seem right.

GoatsandSheep · 16/08/2022 10:23

Nowadays I like some of the cheaper interior design ones such as Style at Home.
Fast Forward was my favourite as a kid (late 80s/early 90s). My Nan always had both the Radio Times and the TV Times in the days when they respectively only listed BBC and ITV/C4 programmes. I used to read these cover-to-cover along with her stack of Murder Casebook magazines!

starfishmummy · 16/08/2022 10:24

Yes. But probably not as many because there are fewer that I am interested in these days.

JubileeTrifle · 16/08/2022 10:30

I think I will and then they are £6 or something and the price of a book. Sad about it. I tried the online thing but I hate reading online.

Mymugisblue · 16/08/2022 10:31

How silly to say they don't exist anymore!

I buy The Simple Things, Country Living and a special interest magazine, love them and can spend ages flicking through. Can't stand women's magazines or crap like Grazia though, they definitely still exist so lots of people clearly do!

CravenRaven · 16/08/2022 10:34

I have a subscription for Gorderners World.

If I were taking a train journey, or had time to kill, I might buy New Scientist or National Geographic or Private Eye or similar.

A coffee and a mag is my favourite way to fill "waiting" time - e.g. last time was waiting for the car windscreen to be changed.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/08/2022 10:35

@KimberleyClark Yep done all that- I just like the feel of paper I guess and proper page turning!!

MsJuniper · 16/08/2022 10:37

I will confess I LOVE a real-life magazine. Take A Break or That's Life for preference. No interest in the celebrity ones but I like reading about people's lives. I guess browsing MN is a bit like that too.

I haven't read them for ages but have just been on holiday and bought one every few days to read when the children were in bed or playing. Oh it was lovely.

Wowitshot · 16/08/2022 10:40

I buy Country Living, and the Radio Times at Christmas. It wouldn't be the same on an app. It's the whole experience I like, flicking through, looking at the pics. And how would I highlight the shows I want to watch? Grin

I don't really click with any other magazine, although occasionally get Good Housekeeping. I can chart my life through comics and magazines: Playhour - Nikki - Jackie - Smash Hits - Just Seventeen - NME - Minx and Sky - Glamour, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan - Heat - Country Living!

girlfriend44 · 16/08/2022 10:54

No but I get them passed onto me by friends

Ifailed · 16/08/2022 10:56

I have a subscription for Gorderners World.

I know it's a typo, but I now want to buy a copy of Gorderners World!

BrieAndChilli · 16/08/2022 11:07

i subscribe to readly - it works out sooo much cheaper! its £10 a month so even if I only read 2 magazines I've covered the cost, it means I can read loads of magazines and not worry about the cost.

I do buy a physical radio times at christmas and also will buy some actual magazines if going on holiday abroad as 1 dont want to have an ipad by the pool and 2 hard to read a screen in the sun.

yellowsmileyface · 16/08/2022 11:09

Oh happy memories of going to school with the latest Bliss and flicking through the pages with my friends during break. This thread has really brought me back!

I haven't read magazines regularly for about ten years. The kind I used to read (girly mags) just don't appeal to me anymore. Occasionally in more recent years I've bought one for a long journey but have realised I'd rather just bring a book.

JustJustWhy · 16/08/2022 11:11

I use Readly as well. So many magazines and newspapers to choose from and you can even do the crosswords!

RosaGallica · 16/08/2022 11:43

There’s a big difference between informative magazines and the crap that is produced under the name of ‘women’s’, ‘men’s’ and ‘celebrity’. I never saw the point of any of that.

I do still buy craft magazines if there’s something I like, puzzles for holiday and current affairs stuff. The kids have a subscription to something similar.

TheStarsDontShine · 16/08/2022 11:45

I use the library app Libby - hundreds of magazines and all free inc back issues

AtomicBlondeRose · 16/08/2022 08:52

Women’s magazines are basically dead as a genre. Unless some serious revamping goes on, I don’t see myself ever buying one again (and I used to love them).

However take a step into WH Smith and you will see the niche/special interest sector is thriving! I wanted to buy a railway magazine for my DS and there were about 10 to choose from. Now I find them very boring but each and every one was bursting with content, lots of photos, detailed articles, stuff you can’t find anywhere else. I felt a bit jealous actually as I’d love that sort of magazine if it was about something other than railways. Just hours and hours of reading.

You've reminded me that i have got a subscription to Steam Railway for my 5yo son. He absolutely loves the minutiae and the pictures.

FlyingSaucerss · 16/08/2022 13:52

Loads in the shops near me, I sometimes buy my dd one but don’t really like buying them as they are expensive so it’s rare.

YouBelongHere · 16/08/2022 13:56

I like the real life ones as well, my favourite is Take a Break. I did avoid them for a bit because my step-brother ended up in one and although he was no saint his ex-girlfriend that sold the story definitley wasn't either and completely changed the story to fit her narrative.

Loved reading Shout as a teenager, my Mum bought me a copy every month. I don't buy them as often now, only if I'm between books really and want something to read.

AppleBottomRats · 16/08/2022 14:06

I subscribe to Ethical Consumer but never seen it in a shop. I subscribed to the Sunday Times for a while mostly for the magazines but gave that up because I had a backlog. Also had a brief subscription to an outdoors mag using a cheap code from one of the Christmas bargain threads.

I used to sometimes get Glamour as a student (having started on Shout as a teen) but I think it’s online only now. I kind of went off fashion/beauty magazines because the products they feature don’t usually meet my ethical standards - fast fashion, animal testing etc.

PinkButtercups · 16/08/2022 14:08

Yes, not every week.

I like the Chat and Take A Break ones.

DS 3 of course loves the kids magazines!
