How much do you spend on your hair a year?

We were doing a family budget and my biggest and really only personal expense is my hair. I think I am well within the national average for a 47 year old woman, DH thinks it's ludicrous (even though he spends equally on trainers and clothes). So how much a year does your crowning glory set you back?

I get my hair cut maybe once or twice a year. About £30-40 each time so £80 max.

BellaLab · 15/08/2022 16:40

Hair £1040
Hair products £400ish

@AcetoneForMyPhone I am really tempted buying scissors on amazon and trim my ends. Did you learn from tutorial on youtube or something? I won't see my hairdresser until November.

Yes, do buy some. I do have professional scissors (my mum always cut our hair at home) and they are expensive as a one off cost, about £50 maybe?

I have an expensive Mason Pearson real bristle hairbrush (they're about £65)

I do have a very simple (long straight) hairstyle and I don't worry too much about what other people think about me either 😂Still, I hold down a "professional" job and don't think I look too "scrappy".

My make up spend is about £5 a year as well.

I'm just a simple gal.

Meltingsocks · 15/08/2022 16:42

About £700-800, cut and colour every 7-8 weeks. I'm 41 and refuse to tolerate the greys or dullness

TitInATrance · 15/08/2022 16:50

About £80 in products. Not had it cut in a couple of years.

Camomila · 15/08/2022 17:08

Maybe £50 a year, I cut my hair myself (it's curly so doesn't need to be a perfect straight cut) and buy shampoo/conditioner with the supermarket shop.

PacMantra7 · 15/08/2022 17:10

Spend my money on other things that I enjoy

LavenderfortheBees · 15/08/2022 17:15

Get it trimmed about once a year for £30ish. Buy big bottles of shampoo and wash three times a week so they last a long time. So maybe £40-50 a year total. Don't use other products really.

RuthW · 15/08/2022 17:16

£320

Cut every 6 weeks and 4 packets of hair dye.

Allywill · 15/08/2022 17:19

About £250 but I’m in a very cheap part of the country and chop my ends with kitchen scissors in between appointments!

Mammyloveswine · 15/08/2022 17:35

About 45 quid a month it averages I think!! So around £550 quid a year-a tiny percentage of our take home pay!!

badbaduncle · 15/08/2022 17:39

Lanaa · 15/08/2022 05:42

About £3000 Blush Afro hair can be an expensive labour of love. That includes 2x good quality wigs. Braids in the summer, bi weekly deep condition and steam treatments in the hair dressers.

Thank you @Lanaa, I am sure it is worth every penny.

BestIsWest · 15/08/2022 17:39

£360. I get it cut once a month as it’s very short. When I used to colour it, it was £550.
DH spends £120.

badbaduncle · 15/08/2022 17:45

SimonaRazowska · 15/08/2022 06:53

4x haircut 65 = 260
shampoo conditioner around 10
henna every 2 months 6x8= 48 (allergic to real hair dye)
hair clips dry shampoo mousse etc 30

total: £348 a year

i have a hair dryer and a straightener but they last for years

how much for you OP?

It's my colour. I have a full balayage 2x per year and 1 cut, but use expensive products too
Approx £1200 per year 🤷‍♀️
I have no handbag at all, don't wear make up, and buy very very few clothes (all on eBay). I just bloody love my hair

Husband has always cut/clipped his own hair. DD has had hers cut 3x in her life 😂😂 it's waist length and wild, ds does the Turkish barbers - about £10 every 3 months.

£0 because I cut it myself and don’t colour it. I like natural shampoo/conditioners which I buy in bulk once per quarter but they are used by the whole household. I used to but then I realised I was spending £100s to prevent my greys offending society No more!

AliTheMinx · 15/08/2022 18:14

I'm 44 and thankfully a natural blonde, so no colour needed. I have it cut about 3-4 times a year, so spend about £150. I just use regular shampoo and conditioner (Aussie or Pantene, etc), so no big expense. I don't use any products - I literally just wash and go.

Piccy · 15/08/2022 18:41

Nothing - my DH cuts it now and then, I very very lucky to have thick, wavy hair that just looks pretty good when left to it's own devices! It goes lighter and darker depending on sunlight so it looks naturally highlighted.

My mum has to spend hundreds, her hair is very thin, and only a short cut suits her so she needs regular styling.

As I get older I may need to have a shorter style, a hairdresser told me once that long hair doesn't suit any woman past 40!

littlepeas · 15/08/2022 18:47

Not that much anymore - I used to have a full head of highlights every 6 weeks and a trim every 12 weeks. Now I have 2x balayage and 2x trims. Cost is prob £300 per year in total. Lockdowns made me realise I didn’t need to be so high maintenance!

I have a few greys (about to turn 40) but they don’t bother me at all.

What a bigot she is! I am late 40s, very long hair. Looks great abs I get endless compliments. I mean look at these glorious beautiful women: www.byrdie.com/15-long-hairstyles-for-women-over-50-5070905

About £350 . Cut every 8 weeks, highlights once or twice a year and bar shampoo.

Divebar2021 · 15/08/2022 18:59

About £700 a year for the cuts and colour. I have short hair and need to cut it every 6/7 weeks to keep the style. I don’t colour every time though. These answers are making me feel ok about it though so thanks.

ShitPuffin · 15/08/2022 19:01

Maybe about £1700. But that’s because I have a whole-head of highlights (and my hair is long and I have a lot of it so they always charge more) and I live in London.

Harvey3 · 15/08/2022 19:02

About £80

Geekynzmum · 15/08/2022 19:03

I'm lucky to get a hair cut once a year, last one was nearly 3 years in-between due to covid ...
Hair products - maybe £30 a year as I use shampoo bar which lasts ages and leave in conditioner. I also only shampoo my hair every other week as it goes to dry and brittle otherwise.
