How much do you spend on your hair a year?

We were doing a family budget and my biggest and really only personal expense is my hair. I think I am well within the national average for a 47 year old woman, DH thinks it's ludicrous (even though he spends equally on trainers and clothes). So how much a year does your crowning glory set you back?

OP posts:
Onthegrid · 15/08/2022 06:25

Hair at salon approx £1000 per year
Hair product approx £200 per year

Timwith2noses · 15/08/2022 06:28

I must admit working out yearly was a bit of a shock - I pay about £150 every 8 weeks for highlights/toner/cut & finish - annually that’s £975 (gulp).

FunsizedandFabulous · 15/08/2022 06:31

Hair products: About £50 a year.

2-3 cuts a year at the hairdressers (and because I relent at how split it gets) about £150 (fifty quid a go, cheap where I live).

Hair ties and other bobbins; about £20 a year.

Thank f*ck I no longer colour my hair.

Chouetted · 15/08/2022 06:36

I have curly hair, so I cut my own, and use Johnson's baby shampoo and a cheap silicone free conditioner. I'd be surprised if it was over £50 a year, and that would include a good pair of hairdressing scissors

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/08/2022 06:37

4 x £7 box dye =£28
1x £5 dry cut
so £33. Though if I cut and dyed it every 2 months like I probably should it’d be £72.

stuntbubbles · 15/08/2022 06:37

£0 in haircuts. Don’t use products other than solid shampoo – about £3 a pop every couple of months. So £18?

soupmaker · 15/08/2022 06:38

4 haircuts a year = £100

Hair care products = £50

onelittlefrog · 15/08/2022 06:40

Probably about £150-200 on 3 or 4 haircuts at a salon, and the same again on products. I think that's reasonable but I don't colour/ highlight at the moment (have in the past) - that's what bumps it up a lot.

I find a lot of hairdressers also try and convince you that you need cuts a lot more regularly, which irritates me. You don't need a trim every 6-8 weeks to 'keep hair healthy', hair grows just the same whether or not you cut it.

tenbob · 15/08/2022 06:40

Cut and colour 3 times a year -£450
blow dry before a wedding etc - £80 maybe?
olaplex shampoo for my awful hair - £100

Natsku · 15/08/2022 06:41

About 35 euros - get it cut once a year as I put it off and off until it gets too long to bear. I should get it cut more often but I hate going to the hairdressers.

SafeHeaven · 15/08/2022 06:42

£500 in the hairdressers. This doesn’t include Olaplex shampoos etc that I buy.

however I do spend £1800 on nails and waxing a year

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 15/08/2022 06:43

Probably about 50 or 60 quid. Planning on spending a bit more going forwards but it's the first luxury to go when economies need to be made and I cut everyone else in the family's hair.

Goldmember · 15/08/2022 06:43

550 a year = roots done every 3 weeks. Cut and highlights twice a year.

Vikinga · 15/08/2022 06:44

1-2 haircuts a year £40-80

Wash once a week but shampoo, conditioner and styling/care products probably total £100. Think I use about £200 of them a year.

Hair is an important part of how I feel about myself. It's naturally curly so a good haircut and good products means it is shiny and sits nicely. A bad haircut and bad hair products would mean a frizzy dull mess that didnt suit me.

Sarahcoggles · 15/08/2022 06:44

2 x £8 = £16

CrappyJob · 15/08/2022 06:44

So op, are you going to share how much you spend?

maddy68 · 15/08/2022 06:45

I colour it myself and my cut and blow costs £30

dressupinyou · 15/08/2022 06:47

Cut and balayage twice a year £140 each.
Maybe another two cuts through the year but often not. £50 each.

Then just a stupid amount of money on products now and again. Currently trying Merwave.

dudsville · 15/08/2022 06:50

This used to be a huge expense of mine but it's dropped right down. The varieties you'll see on here will be drastic i think.

AmberGer · 15/08/2022 06:51

Not much. I don't dye my hair. I'm allergic to hair dye so can't.
A family member (hairdresser) cuts my hair a few times a year. £10 each time.
I don't use any products.
I wash my hair in conditioner only (cheap one too, Alberto balsam)
That's it.
Around £35‐40 per year, all in

crossstitchingnana · 15/08/2022 06:52

£450

SimonaRazowska · 15/08/2022 06:53

4x haircut 65 = 260
shampoo conditioner around 10
henna every 2 months 6x8= 48 (allergic to real hair dye)
hair clips dry shampoo mousse etc 30

total: £348 a year

i have a hair dryer and a straightener but they last for years

how much for you OP?

WhatTheFuckingHell · 15/08/2022 06:53

£20 odd for shampoo per year (bar)
£10 for hair mask used every 3 months
and around £50-£75 hair cut (every 6 months)
all in all- £80- £95

Carrotzen · 15/08/2022 06:54

How is everyone's haircuts so cheap?

Mines about 180 for cut, highlights and blow-dry. Plus a treatment. Have that done around 4-5 x a year

Plus probably an extra £400ish a year on products.

So I guess about 1200 a year? It's blond highlights that cost for me but I think even a basic cut is about £45 round here and I'm not even in London!

Crimblecrumblerules · 15/08/2022 06:54

£0 Haircuts (shoulder length hair, or ever needs trim round which mum used to do, daughter kow does)
Used to do box dyes but let it go naturally grey (people as where I've had it coloured 😂)
Just ordinary shampoo and conditioner
