How much do you spend on your hair a year?

We were doing a family budget and my biggest and really only personal expense is my hair. I think I am well within the national average for a 47 year old woman, DH thinks it's ludicrous (even though he spends equally on trainers and clothes). So how much a year does your crowning glory set you back?

I must admit DH has occasionally thanked me profusely for being a low maintenance (grooming) woman. I don't get beauty treatments or wear makeup. He must hear stories from male colleagues about their female partner's personal grooming costs. I can believe £800-£1500/year is common for people even on ordinary incomes. Adult student DD probably spends about £350/year.

My Hair cost: £5 a year on hair bands, I suppose. £5 every other year on a new comb/quality brush that suits my exact hair type (fine strands but tonnes of it). DH cuts it & I only wash it about once a month (*), which means I'm still working thru a shampoo bottle I bought in (probably) 2017. Adult DD obsessively daily washes (& conditions) her (dyed blonde) hair, it feels like straw to me but she insists it's "greasy." Anyway, she leaves behind nearly finished shampoo bottles so they'll probably carry me a few years forward with still not needing to buy shampoo.

(*) For those who responded "Yuck!", I get spontaneous compliments on how nice my hair looks. <shrug>

Vicliz24 · 15/08/2022 08:14

1x £10 haircut. Maybe £25 on products I have been grey for 7 years so no colour . A few £s on ties grips not £50 a year .

FinallyHere · 15/08/2022 08:15

Heavens, I've never added it up before.

£153 every five weeks for cut / colour, say ten time a year would be £1530

£25 blow dry every week in between
Say forty times a year ...

£2500 a year.

In my defence, having my hair always look pretty good is daily heart lifting luxury for me.

I don't wear makeup or use facial care. Shower and body creme daily, using basic rather than fancy branded creme. Don't buy many clothes, wear clothes for years and only throw them out when threadbare.

Strugglingtodomybest · 15/08/2022 08:16

£30-60 per year

crosbystillsandmash · 15/08/2022 08:16

Almost nothing as I cut it myself.
My nails though and make up.... 😳

Cosycover · 15/08/2022 08:17

I'm about £150 every 8/9 weeks and then around £400 a year on extensions.

Wouldloveanother · 15/08/2022 08:18

£70 every 3 months. Cut, root melt and balayage. So around £300 a year.

Nothappyatwork · 15/08/2022 08:09

Are we counting things like replacing straighteners and hairdryers and all that sort of thing ?
colour wise I need to get mind of more often I only paid 150 last year for full head of highlights but in retrospect I look shit for 50% of the year so that needs doing at least once more often.

About £500 a year

Straighteners and hairdryers isn't going to be a significant expense though is it?

Even if you get expensive ones, they'll last for years, so the cost per year must be £10/20 at most.

Fairislefandango · 15/08/2022 08:23

About £300 - £350. I have it cut 4 or 5 times a year and have a half head of highlights twice a year (only in the last couple of years,so spent less before that). I'm not counting shampoo and conditioner as a personal expense, because I don't buy anything fancy, I just use the same cheap stuff as the rest of the family!

ofwarren · 15/08/2022 08:25

Zero
If you are counting products, probably around £15 in shampoo over the year.

CrappyJob · 15/08/2022 08:26

Oh, I said zero, but someone mentioned hairbands.

So maybe £3.

mac1974 · 15/08/2022 08:43

My colour needs doing every 6 weeks really but I try to push it to 8 as it's £90 a time so I guess around £700 a year.
I'm considering dyeing it myself but it's never as good.

stuntbubbles · 15/08/2022 08:43

CrappyJob · 15/08/2022 08:26

Oh, I said zero, but someone mentioned hairbands.

So maybe £3.

Mind you if we’re counting Kirby grips then probably upwards of £1,000,000 – where do the bastard things GO?

DaisyWaldron · 15/08/2022 08:48

Teen DD cuts my hair for free.
Around £40 for hair dye.
Probably around £30 on shampoo and conditioner. Maybe less.
£6 on curl cream
£6ish for curl spray.

So £80ish per year. It was a lot more before DD started cutting her own hair and then branched out to other people's.

I haven't worked out the energy costs for using a hairdryer in winter.

Stag82 · 15/08/2022 08:50

About £150 on hair cuts (about 4 a year) I have long hair so no real hair style and I haven't needed to dye it (yet!)

No idea on shampoo etc but I don't buy high end. Ans usually stock up when it's on offer!

ManateeFair · 15/08/2022 08:54

About £300 a year on getting it cut. Would obviously be a lot more if I had it coloured, but I don’t.

I probably spend about £75 a year on shampoo and products.

Alarae · 15/08/2022 09:04

I reckon I probably go 4 times a year to the hair salon. One time is a full balayage session and others are cut and toner.

Looking back if I did all that in one year it would be ~£500 which is horrifying to me (although admittedly my hair does look nice).

I reckon I might just eek my hair out for a bit longer between sessions for now. Failing that, I'm tempted to just have some fun with colour and might just go purple (but then I feel I might regret it due to how much my hair has cost me!)

Snog · 15/08/2022 09:04

£250 a year

nokidshere · 15/08/2022 09:07

Hardly anything at all. I have thick curly hair that is very forgiving. I just wash and leave it. In the past 3 years I had it cut once and it was £45.

MicksMate · 15/08/2022 09:07

There's going to be a massive response bias on threads like this. You can easily spend £100 plus on a cut and colour several times a year. Of course lots of people don't, but there are lots who do. I've gone natural colour now which is saving me a fortune, but if I was working I'd probably still be dyeing it.

MassiveSalad22 · 15/08/2022 09:08

I cut my own and intend to see how I suit natural grey when they come in. So just shampoo and conditioner costs.

Introvertedbuthappy · 15/08/2022 09:08

Between £1500-2000 a year. It makes me feel good though and it's my money so I don't see the problem. We can easily afford it, when we were poor I spent about £70 a year, but I am lucky enough not to need to live like that any more.

Phrenologistsfinger · 15/08/2022 09:09

0 (apart from shampoo)

Blackdiame · 15/08/2022 09:11

£19 (cut) x 4 = £76
£10 (shampoo + conditioner) x 4 = £40
1 tub of wax = £5

Total £121

onthefencesitter · 15/08/2022 09:14

Haircut once or twice a year often in my home country (which is cheaper)- £50 in total more likely £40

Used to dye my hair twice a year in the salon but switched to home dye now- £15 per box every few months so £60?

Share shampoo with DH (herbal essences). L'Oréal conditioner for a few quid?

At most £120.

I don't go for any beauty treatments or do my nails but do wear nice makeup and have a skincare routine made of mainly drugstore products. Estimate I spend £700 on makeup /skincare yearly and thought I was high maintenance. But I guess I spend little on hair...
