How much do you spend on your hair a year?

We were doing a family budget and my biggest and really only personal expense is my hair. I think I am well within the national average for a 47 year old woman, DH thinks it's ludicrous (even though he spends equally on trainers and clothes). So how much a year does your crowning glory set you back?

About £300. That would be for 4-5 cuts a year and using home hair dye.

Dimondsareforever · 15/08/2022 06:55

£100 every 3 months and then shampoo etc … on top

Sooverthisnow · 15/08/2022 06:57

8 x £35 so £280

Mintchervilpurslane · 15/08/2022 07:00

Cut approx 6 times a year = 6 × 36 = 216 (although price going up soon)
Plus about 112 on box dye = Euros 328

Plus the cost of shampoo, conditioner, styling gel, and hair spray and electricity to blow dry which very roughly must be about 50 annually, which makes € 378 in total which is £ 319

I am surprised it is as much as that tbh as I consider myself quite low maintenance!

CrunchyCarrot · 15/08/2022 07:01

Nothing. I cut my own hair every few months, job done! Mind you it's fairly straight hair so relatively easy to do.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 15/08/2022 07:02

£150.

Hair cut costs around £50 twice a year. Plus shampoo (T-Gel) and conditioner.

I should take better care of my hair but 1.time 2.don't feel like I'm deserving of self care 3.money.

MsMarvellous · 15/08/2022 07:03

We spend £50 every 6 weeks and the hairdresser comes to our home and cuts all 4 of our hair. So about £450 a year for all 4 of us.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/08/2022 07:05

For the last 10-15 years about £10 a year for a couple of box dyes as I tied it back and then just trimmed the ends myself. However, I've just had it restyled shorter and will be getting it cut every couple of months at a local salon that costs £30 a time. Plus I dye it myself so probably averages around £20 pm.

But what others spend isn't really relevant, you'll see that you've had answers between nothing and £100+ pm. Beyond a basic cut to keep it tidy a few times a year, it's choice to spend more than that. If you want to cover greys, you can do it at home for almost nothing.

So if you want to spend more than that, you have to see how it works with your budget. If money is tight, regular cut and colour at a smart salon isn't really affordable, it's a luxury.

The fairest way would be to account for all joint expenses including savings for emergencies/pensions and other irregular expenses like Christmas, insurance etc then split what's left 50/50. Then you can pay for whatever you want doing to your hair out of that and DH can buy his trainers and clothes.

MeanderingGently · 15/08/2022 07:08

Almost nothing, I do buy cheap shampoo so about £15 a year??
I started cutting my own in 2019 and over time I have become better and better at it, and yes, I do layer it, even at the back.
I used to colour my hair but decided to stop the chemicals and I'm quite pleased with it at the moment, it's going grey but only in parts and has a sort-of distinguished dual tone look. I now wonder why I spent so many years putting colour on my hair, it looks perfectly fine when natural.

goldfinchonthelawn · 15/08/2022 07:10

£120-£180. That's two-three cuts a year, no colour. Hairdressers around here are cripplingly expensive so I just it it cut quite short twice a year in a style that grows out OK. If it was badly cut then I have to have a third cut.

carefullycourageous · 15/08/2022 07:11

About £60 on 3 x haircuts.
About £30 on shampoo and conditioner.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 15/08/2022 07:12

Probably about £30-50 per year on shampoo and conditioner.

My SIL is a hairdresser and cuts it for free.

What do you spend?

paulmccartneysbagel · 15/08/2022 07:14

£30 for 2 x cuts and probably about £30 on box dyes

I get my hair cut twice a year and either go to the market or see a graduate at my local salon.

Stuffin · 15/08/2022 07:16

£350 at the hairdressers

Louise0701 · 15/08/2022 07:16

I’ve just sat and worked it out and it’s £1,560

I reckon DC comes to around £400 a year between the 3 of them.

Aprilx · 15/08/2022 07:16

Mine is about £1200 per year, cut and colour every seven weeks on average.

Cherryana · 15/08/2022 07:18

£60 colour and cut every six weeks -£360
£200 hair extensions
£200 to fit them

So far this year £760

I have a few more cut and colours this year a and it’s £200 a time for refits and I will do it at least twice more this year.

Around £1300

SpaceyCake · 15/08/2022 07:19

Around £80 for two haircuts and whatever I spend on shampoo (tresemme so I don't actually need to buy shampoo very often 😁). I hate wasting time and money on my hair. I just can't be arsed with it so I keep it long and get it cut when it starts looking ridiculous.

ZenNudist · 15/08/2022 07:20

About £450 plus shampoo and hair products maybe £30

CosmopolitanPlease · 15/08/2022 07:23

My dh is always astonished at how much it costs me to get my hair done, they really have no idea - men's hair is a different world.

I spend around £80 on half head highlights, shampoo and wet cut (I dry it myself at home to save £20 or whatever) and ideally I would get my hair done every two months but I end up going for much longer between visits because I just can't afford it.

StarDolphins · 15/08/2022 07:24

Cut & colour every 3 months at £42 - I just pay for the products as my friend owns the salon.

Olaplex - £26 per month☹️ I am now mixing it with Superdrug cheaper 1 so hoping to cut this down.

if I didn’t have my friend to colour it cheap, I’d go to the local college & let the students do it. I just won’t pay £100+ for cut & colour.

Londonrach1 · 15/08/2022 07:26

£0 re haircuts, shampoo £1-£2 for about a month but DH and DD use the shampoo too.

Jellywobblescobbles · 15/08/2022 07:27

Approx £1100 a year. (Not including products). With those it might be £1300.

CrappyJob · 15/08/2022 07:28

@badbaduncle how much do you spend?
