To think people should hang their heads in shame

After Freya the walrus who had taken up residence in a Norwegian fjord has been euthanised because idiot people would not heed the warnings to stop getting so close to her which put them and her in danger . People were posing for photos , feeding her and throwing things at her .

Now she's been euthanised . So they have nothing to see .

👏👏👏 slow hand clap .

Surely boat owners had insurance? Or does it not cover walrus damage ? Act of god ? I do feel she'd have gone on her way had they left her alone .

Stupid people.why should this poor creature pay the price. They should have issued harsh fines to these. I hope they do hang their heads in Shame.

Cas112 · 14/08/2022 19:39

People are idiots

Pruella · 14/08/2022 19:39

I'm pretty sure fishermen have co existed with marine wildlife for as long as they've been there

Well they co exist with marine wildlife if by that you mean that they kill lots of it so this is a weird point. If you think a fishing community wouldn’t want an animal that was sinking boats killed then I don’t think you’re thinking it through very well.

FourChimneys · 14/08/2022 19:43

I'm sure the poor creature will live on in many Instagram and TikTok posts 😰

limitedperiodonly · 14/08/2022 19:47

@stillvicarinatutu you chose to copy the people who called it Freya The Walrus. Why? You weren't being forced. You could have called it a walrus but you preferred the cute name and didn't think how destructive this kind of thinking is. That's stupid. You bought into the anthropomorphism and need for humans to own this animal just as the people who posed for selfies with it did.

It came to that area in search of easy food. Why wouldn't it? Its hunger overcame its fear of humans. It didn't have anything to fear from them except killing by kindness.

The best thing to do would be to ignore it. It would then either go away and join other walruses or die because it could no longer hunt and relied on humans for food. If you really care about wild animals you argue for a safe place for them to live away from humans. You don't join in with the other people and give them names like a pet and then bleat: "But they did it first."

Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed.

This isn’t true in the slightest. Every mammal multiplies as fast as it can, populations are only kept in check so as to not over consume renewable resources through predators or in the absence of predators, by human culling.

Deer are a good example of this. Most countries the humans have killed off the natural predators of deer, because these are also predators of humans. So talking about big cats (lions, panthers, etc), bears, wolves, coyotes and such. Left alone, the deer quickly multiply and over populate an area and their over grazing of saplings has literally killed or endangered entire forests. It’s why for example Scotland has to regularly cull the red deer in the Caledonian forest where several tree species are now endangered due to deer over population.

And like many mammal species kept in check by human culling, we humans also cull ourselves through contraception and abortion. Those two things are the reason why global population growth has slowed down over the past fifty years to record low and is projected to reach equilibrium or even decline by the end of this century. Proving that if women have reproductive rights, we humans do naturally choose to manage the human population in equilibrium with resources.

I’m just glad this was in Norway and not in the U.K., otherwise MN would be full of people saying trust Brits to be so stupid/horrible, etc., in ‘other countries’ it wouldn’t happen.

squishymamma · 14/08/2022 19:52

Brit living in Oslo here - it’s a lot more nuanced if you read the Norwegian news. The government is going to question the Department for Fishing (who made the decision and carried out the euthanisation) because they disagreed with the decision.

Also Freya was hanging around public swimming places. It’s very different to a beach, where you can just choose a different section to be on and enter the water - there tends to be just one section with access, and all of the swimming places have been really busy with the hot weather. Of course there are many idiots that intentionally tried to swim close and have pictures etc but I bet most people hadn’t even heard she was there. I hadn’t heard before the news came that she’d been euthanised. So they were really worried about public safety in general (though it was mainly the idiots that led to the final decision) as many people of all ages use those areas.

Not trying to justify the end decision, but as always there’s more to the story than “we’re a terrible species and should all die” 🤷🏻‍♀️

ChillyFloss · 14/08/2022 19:55

Well, given that the Norwegians still carry out whaling (citing their "opposition" to an IWC moritorium observed by practically everyone else) why would we be surprised they killed a Walrus?

Pleiades2020 · 14/08/2022 20:08

That's so sad. I read about her a few weeks ago. Poor Freya. I don't think they should have killed her though, just let events take their course. If you're on safari you wouldn't get out of the car and take a selfie with a Lion for goodness sake.

megletthesecond · 14/08/2022 20:10

I can't believe it got this bad.
I wonder why a local environmental group and the authorities didn't keep people away?

TheMarzipanDildo · 14/08/2022 20:14

stillvicarinatutu · 14/08/2022 17:00

I've always said the climate crisis won't destroy the planet , the planet will survive just like it always has through ice ages and floods and heat, it's the human race which will be destroyed. We will kill ourselves off . The planet will carry on regardless.

I always find this a strangely cheering thought.

CatChant · 14/08/2022 20:15

Very sad. Surely her death was unnecessary.

It must have been such a privilege to observe a wild walrus - from a distance.

HesterShaw1 · 14/08/2022 20:21

We had a walrus last year, and actually Brits weren't this stupid

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 14/08/2022 20:22

Well, yes. But that’s also due to human behaviour. Humans wouldn’t have to cull Red Deer to protect forests if previous humans hadn’t hunted the apex predator to extinction.

thecatsthecats · 14/08/2022 20:26

Two thoughts spring to mind:

  1. Humans should be allowed to die if they're too fucking stupid to live. That deals with the risk to humans angle.

  2. Last year I was off sick with stress for seven months. It affected my sleep, my appetite, my general health. Nobody put me to sleep. My life was still worth living. So why wasn't Freya allowed to live an imperfect life? Why did some human get to decide that it wasn't?

Onlyhuman123 · 14/08/2022 20:27

Sickening that she was put down for her own health and wellbeing...eh?!? I fucking hate the human race sometimes. the individuals who got too close should've been put down..

Bangolads · 14/08/2022 20:34

I completely agree. I’m so appalled

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/08/2022 20:35

It's awful.

Viviennemary · 14/08/2022 20:44

I read about this earlier. Surely they could have taken this walruss to a safer place. Its horrible what they did

urgen · 14/08/2022 20:48

See the family including children were brought to ‘see’. Stupid fools.

Leafy3 · 14/08/2022 20:51

Couldn't she have been moved? Released elsewhere?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/08/2022 20:56

Yes, I know, @HesterShaw1 , but my point was that plenty of MNers love any opportunity of slagging off the UK and all who sail in her - except the oh so righteous ones like themselves, of course.

Indoctro · 14/08/2022 21:07

Didn't David Attenborough say Humans will be most likely extinct in 100years

No sure the planet or Mother Nature will care much

The planet will flourish without humans.

Poor Freya Sad
