After Freya the walrus who had taken up residence in a Norwegian fjord has been euthanised because idiot people would not heed the warnings to stop getting so close to her which put them and her in danger . People were posing for photos , feeding her and throwing things at her .

Now she's been euthanised . So they have nothing to see .

👏👏👏 slow hand clap .

That’s the human race for you…….not surprised someone up there is giving us a hard time atm with covid, monkey pox, and another virus doing the rounds in China. We need to be wiped out.

purplecorkheart · 14/08/2022 18:37

Because they think their selfies and social media is more important than a living being

The post doesn't quite go with the username.

Freya should have been left to get on with her life and if some dickhead ignoring warnings got too close and was killed or injured, so be it. Darwin's law in action.

There are times when I hate the human race and think mass human extinction would solve all a lot of planet earth's problems

I think that is harsh on those of us who do respect the planet/animals.

In this instance though - it is hard how idiotic people can be and how the worst people take from all of us.

PrimAndProperViperish · 14/08/2022 18:55

Oh, no. This is awful. Bloody hell, people. Do better.

ConfusedLove · 14/08/2022 18:55

So sad. Rest in heavenly waters, Freya 😢

REP22 · 14/08/2022 18:58

Agree. A heartbreaking waste of an innocent life. We (humans) are parasites, ruining this planet for the rest of its inhabitants.

DangerouslyBored · 14/08/2022 19:02

Humans are fundamentally parasitic cunts

DangerouslyBored · 14/08/2022 19:03

That obviously isn’t aimed at the few who aren’t. And you know who you are.

Actually I've wondered if it really would be so bad if the human race died out .
Our selfishness and destruction doesn't leave anything to be desired

not wanting to spread the message of the movies but this quote does seem to sum us up as a species

“I´d like to share a revelation that I´ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species, and I realized that you’re not actually mammals.

Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way can survive is to spread to another area.
There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus.
Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You’re a plague."

stillvicarinatutu · 14/08/2022 19:06

Through on-site observations the past week it was made clear that the public has disregarded the current recommendation to keep a clear distance to the walrus. Therefore, the Directorate has concluded, the possibility for potential harm to people was high and animal welfare was not being maintained," Mr Bakke-Jensen said in a statement.

The reason the animal was euthanised was because people were ignoring the warnings. I'm pretty sure the people who used the harbour and worked there have co existed with marine life .

excitingusername · 14/08/2022 19:14

I do wonder that it has been blamed directly on the people to provoke controversy when actually these are public swimming/boating areas and even if people were respectful it may have been dangerous. The walrus was climbing on the boats and probably damaging property.

It's likely that the authorities who made the decision would blame it on the people.

jetadore · 14/08/2022 19:17

Christ, it’s just a walrus, think about how much enjoyment those people got from their selfies and the number of likes on socials that were generated.

We all think we're the ones who aren't, including you.

CPL593H · 14/08/2022 19:23

This is so sad and was avoidable. It was badly handled all round, apart from the idiots harassing her there could have been better efforts to keep them at a distance.

My grandmother (a Victorian) was very strict about leaving wild creatures alone as "they don't want you bothering them". She wouldn't let us pick frogs up in case the heat from our hands hurt them. I think we have the belief that previous generations cared less and were "harder" but maybe our disconnection from nature has lead to a loss of real understanding.

And this is the problem. Whilst there are people in the world who share views like this, then there is no hope for the planet. What a dick comment.

@stillvicarinatutu slow down before your smugness runs away with you. People are soppy over animals and undoubtedly killed this one in a combination of selfishness and misguided kindness. They should have left it alone to fend for itself.

But you called it Freya The Walrus and lots of other people on this thread have done the same. It's not a pet or the star of a children's book. It's a wild animal and by anthropomorphising it with a cuddly name and saying it took up residence it you are just as guilty as the people you sneer at.

Mmmm. Cos likes on social media is worth far more than preserving our wildlife isn't it ?
I despair sometimes.

It has been called "Freya - not by me - similar I guess to Wally the walrus that was on the uk coast . Giving the animal a name doesn't make it not wild anymore .
I'm not smug . I'm sad that the animal was euthanised because of peoples stupidity.

Anyone who sits down at a table and eats meat should also hang their head in shame. The way we treat animals is shameful.

stillvicarinatutu · 14/08/2022 19:35

People refused warnings not to get too close to the 1,300lb (600kg) animal, putting her and themselves at risk.

The walrus, nicknamed Freya, rose to fame after clambering on to boats to sunbathe - sometimes sinking them.

From the bbc news report. It had been nicknamed Freya .

Nah you’ve been spun. The authorities have been under pressure to put Freya to sleep for weeks due to the boat owners complaining about damages and rumbling about compensation. But to kill an animal for monetary reasons, oh no that would cause public outrage. So what to do? Do a classic media spin.

You publish an article saying “please public stop coming to see Freya or we will have to put her to sleep because you’re stressing her out” (look at the pictures of her, she doesn’t look like a stressed walrus lounging and dozing on boats, besides if she were stressed by the public she would have swum away). You know half the people won’t even see the article, so you know some people are still going to be in a harbour with boats and this near the walrus. This then gives you the excuse to say “you made us put Freya to sleep, shame on you public” and then you have neatly prevented public outrage towards the authorities and poor boat owners who literally viewed Freya as vermin.
