To think people should hang their heads in shame

After Freya the walrus who had taken up residence in a Norwegian fjord has been euthanised because idiot people would not heed the warnings to stop getting so close to her which put them and her in danger . People were posing for photos , feeding her and throwing things at her .

Now she's been euthanised . So they have nothing to see .

👏👏👏 slow hand clap .

I'm absolutely fucking furious about this.

Sums up many human beings' attitudes to other animals. They like other creatures if they are entertaining or cute. If not, nah. Get rid.

Let's not forget that nice civilised Norway is still a whaling nation. People like to criticise the nasty foreign Japanese as a cruel race, and conveniently ignore that European nations kill more whales.

The absolute circus when orcas are in the Norwegian fjords is shameful as well. Boat after boat dumping idiot tourists into the water who are intent on having a spiritual experience with the killer whales (who are not called that for nothing). When an orca snaps and kills a tourist, what then? Will they "euthanase" them too?

Konfetka · 14/08/2022 17:28

Bear in mind that we're talking about Norwegians here, who in their arrogance think it's fine to slaughter whales.

Oh no, that’s not the Walrus who climbed into boats last summer all round Cornwall? And causes chaos in Wales when it took a liking to the RNLI boat slipway and they had to keep going out with an air horn to chase him off so they could launch the boat. How awful - DH and I kept up with it as it toured the U.K. and even saw it in Seahouses. The vast majority of people in the U.K. kept their distance - What is WRONG with people?,

GucciBear · 14/08/2022 17:43

Absolutely dreadful. What awful beings humans can be. Do not Norway still harpoon whales - says it all really.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 14/08/2022 17:46

I don't get why they put her down tbh. If people were warned not to approach her and got hurt doing so it's their own bloody fault.

Genevieva · 14/08/2022 17:47

I am quite cross about this. We had a walrus called Wally near us last year. Everyone gave him distance. He rested, he went off to eat scapulas from the seabed and came back to rest some more. Once he was ready he moved on. He did damage a few boats, but everyone was very considerate. He want all the way down the Irish Sea and across to France without ever being a risk to anyone.

Norway could have handled this better by moving the moorings elsewhere, making a pontoon for Freya and cordoning off the area to prevent tourists from coming too close. You can't move a walrus. They weigh too much. But you can give them the space they need and wait for them to leave, which they will do in time. Wally was last seen heading back to his native Svalbard region.

HesterShaw1 · 14/08/2022 17:56

And actually compared to the way that other countries' inhabitants treated Wally the Walrus when he went on his travels last summer to very populous areas, the Norwegians have not come out of this covered in glory.

Wally's travels took him to Tenby, Scilly, La Rochelle, Bilbao and back to Scilly before moving to Ireland and finally to Iceland The authorities and volunteers managed to keep him safe, educated the public and prevent him coming to harm. It can be done.

mydogisthebest · 14/08/2022 17:58

This makes me angry and sad. On the whole, I hate humans.

I agree with the posters who said it wouldn't be so terrible if the human race died out.

Cakeandbiscuits23 · 14/08/2022 18:04

I knew this thread would be about Freya before I read it and I totally agree. Fucking stupid humans. Poor walrus.

Weaselstoatferret · 14/08/2022 18:05

So infuriating 😡 I work in the marine science field and honestly wonder what the point is sometimes. Things like this just make all the hard work seem futile. As pp said Norway also still hunt minke whales and Iceland are currently allowing fin whale hunting 😞

RicherThanYew · 14/08/2022 18:07

They should have euthanized the airhead dickwad tourists. I'm not being remotely sarcastic, I fucking hate humans.

AuntMasha · 14/08/2022 18:07

So sad to hear about Freya. Agree with others than it wouldn’t be such a bad thing if Humans became extinct. We’re such A holes both to each other and to every single other species.

Hazelthecat · 14/08/2022 18:12

This makes me so sad. I feel shocked at how anyone thought this was an ok thing to do.

Bobby80 · 14/08/2022 18:16

Maybe I'm being unreasonable but surely if you are stupid enough to get to close to a wild animal and are harmed as a result then it's your fault. Don't see the need for any authority to step in. In this situation, if the worst happened to a human it would surely be natural selection at it's finest.....

SuperCamp · 14/08/2022 18:19

excitingusername · 14/08/2022 17:02

They could have done more to address this surely. Or just let it mix with the humans. Who were they to say how her life should've been? If someone was bitten/killed, that's on them, just like getting into a field with a bull and teasing it!

I don’t know for sure but maybe it is like the problem with bears when they get used to humans feeding them: they become a danger to everyone.

Oslo fiord is 100km long and home to fishing boats, many holiday cabins with people in recreational small boats, swimming etc. The report I read said she and started to clamber aboard boats, sometimes sinking them.

Fine if a TikTok or Insta idiot gets bitten or drowned when ignoring instructions, less so if innocent people out fishing get drowned, squashed by a walrus hoping for a snack.

dawngreen · 14/08/2022 18:23

Every time I see these articles in the papers, you always get idiots throwing stuff or chasing them until some thing happens. I don't have much faith in the human race.

Costacoffeeplease · 14/08/2022 18:24

Yep, euthanise the dickheads causing the issues, not the walrus.

I despair of people

stillvicarinatutu · 14/08/2022 18:26

Supercamp

She was sunbathing on boats - but the reason the euthanised her was because people weren't heeding the warnings to stop getting close to her - large crowds of people including children were getting within touching distance despite being told if they didn't stop she would be euthanised.

I'm pretty sure fishermen have co existed with marine wildlife for as long as they've been there . It was the general public that caused her death because they wouldn't stay away from her and the authorities feared she would end up hurting one of the stupid fuckers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

we're scum ive always said it im a hypocrit as i eat meat but still we dont deserve to survive

shockthemonkey · 14/08/2022 18:31

People are such morons and these half-wits should have been treated as such - cordoning off the area for a start, and maybe even some proper bloody policing of those idiots trying to get too close.

awwbiscuits · 14/08/2022 18:31

It's awful and just so unnecessary :(

Wombat100 · 14/08/2022 18:33

So sad. Hate humans!

ClareBlue · 14/08/2022 18:36

There is no doubt that Norwegians are less sentimental about killing big mammals than some others would be, but if you read a bit more it soon becomes clear they looked at every option and their options were limited. The walrus was right in amongst the boats and working harbour where people needed to access and work. At that proximity they are dangerous to humans and get stressed to the point of illness.
They looked at moving it but it couldn't be done without high stress to the Walrus. Levels that they think would kill it, even if they could actually do it.
People visiting was only one concern. There was a real safety issue for people using the harbour and fjord.
They said it was a difficult decision but the only viable option.

We euthanize animals for human safety all the time, so we shouldn't be too critical on the Norwegians making this decision.
