To have ‘defaced’ this photograph??

We have lockers at work, in our break room where everyone goes and one co-worker,
Jim, has a photo of a famous, topless page 3 girl on the inside of his door.
the girl in the photo was 16 when it was taken, and he’s had it since around the same age - he wrote into The Sun and got a signed one sent- so it’s very precious to him.

several women have mentioned to Jim that they’d rather he didn’t have it there as the locker door is often left open and we can see it. Jim thinks we’re prudes, because it’s famous page 3 girls, and IN his locker it’s not an issue.

Anyway, cut to last week. I was alone in break room. Locker door was open so I’m looking at this picture. There were Sharpie pens sitting on the table. So I gave the child in the photo quite a substantial bikini top with the permanent marker.

shit has hit the fan! Management don’t quite know what to do. Jim is furious, and the workforce divided into those who think it’s funny and those who think it was wrong.
no-one know who did it… Jim
his suspicions …

So MN, was AIBU??

Yanbu. Big thank you and well done from me!
I thought this sort of thing wasn't allowed in the workplace anymore? Yes it's in his locker but he's being careless and letting people see it.
Maybe it's in his locker and not at home because he's married, maybe he has daughters who are older than 16. I certainly wouldn't want my dh having it on display nor my dad. Especially when the girl is only 16. Urgh.

‘Woke feminists deface elderly co workers sentimental signed picture hidden away INSIDE his locker’’

he’d be livid at being called elderly! Furious! Anyway, photo gone. No consequences for anyone, we all know it should never have been there.
I’ll watch my back though, revenge is a dish served best cold etc etc!

Which is why because OP cared so much about this they should have contacted HR having not got the required response from the managers. But no, instead they did something and are now sitting back and enjoying the 'who was it' drama and enjoying the applause and back slapping/drama.

How do you know management didn’t involve HR? I’ve been given bad advice from HR before. They’re not infallible oracles.

Cannotmakeadecison · 14/08/2022 11:05

I think you are fabulous OP. Fair play 😆

Fimofriend · 14/08/2022 11:05

I think it is fine to deface child pornography so that it is no longer pornographic. It is illegal to possess child pornography regardless of when said pornography was produced.

Hidingawaytoday · 14/08/2022 11:05

I think Jim is very unreasonable to have the photo at work especially as he KNOWS it makes people uncomfortable (and who would be silly enough to leave something precious to them at work?). However I do think you were a bit unreasonable to have done it. Had anyone made a formal complaint about it's presence?

PoseyFlump · 14/08/2022 11:06

OP you are a legend. This is hilarious. As soon as I read sharpie I started to laugh!

Look Jim knew what was coming, he'd been warned enough times. And management can't do shit because it wasn't in a locked locker and can't defend the porno being on display.

Why did married father of three not want the picture at home I wonder 🤔

Hugasauras · 14/08/2022 11:06

I think you're great, OP Grin

Mamamia7962 · 14/08/2022 11:07

If it's in the locker room, how much time in your working day do you spend in there?

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2022 11:07

I don't, just as you don't know if they did. But from the info given as the managers not seeing a problem why would they?

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 11:07

You could have taken it down, you should not have defaced someone else’s property.

yuck, touch it! who knows what Jim has done to it

NoMichaelNo · 14/08/2022 11:08

Your colleague was displaying an image of child sexual abuse, you should have informed HR.

StrandedStarfish · 14/08/2022 11:08

I think as a friend of Jim you should write to Samantha Fox (if it is she) and ask her for a recent signed photograph of her, explain that Jim has been a fan of her for years. Fingers crossed that MsFox takes pity on him and sends a non exploited) fully clothed photo of herself to replace the other one. Jim will be delighted that his mate made such an effort. 😆

PS if you send a stamped addressed envelope, you are more likely to get a reply

You should dress her up for each season. Autumn next so a nice scarf and some wellies.

Maybe a jaunty hat too!?

Kashmirsilver · 14/08/2022 11:09

Page 3 is tawdry. However, you deliberately damaged a colleague's property.
You should face disciplinary at a minimum. If you worked for me I'd sack you on the spot.

TheCorrs · 14/08/2022 11:09

Agree.
People are now talking about you vandalising other peoples property from their locker.

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 11:09

It is illegal to possess child pornography regardless of when said pornography was produced.

defacing the image is really not the main issue as the image should never have been in the workplace.

CandyLeBonBon · 14/08/2022 11:09

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 11:04

If a middle aged man’s most treasured possession is a child sexual image

tbf it's signed

It won't be an original

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 11:10

lol

mam0918 · 14/08/2022 11:10

You damaged someone elses property in on their property... you commited a crime, of course you are wrong.

Regardless of your personal feelings, it was and still is legal to own and you dont get to impose your personal beliefs in vigilanty actions outside of the law.

Also as a woman who worked for a company similar to page 3 I have never met a woman who it wasnt wholehaertedly her choice to pose topless, many of us feel our breasts are not 'shameful' or 'offensive'... its not femanism to impose control over other women and attempt to shame us or forcibly remove our own choice.

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2022 11:10

management are 3 blokes in their 40s and saw no harm as it was in his locker

So hardly likely that they would be contacting HR themselves is it?

Then you'd probably find yourself in a tribunal for wrongful dismissal

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 11:10

@mam0918 how is it legal to have indecent images of children in the workplace?

Discovereads · 14/08/2022 11:11

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 10:57

Thats like someone cutting up someone’s leather handbag because they are vegan.

except it's not because leather handbags are not illegal

The crocodile skin ones are. Yet many are in private collections and museums as it’s not illegal to own something made before the law changed to make it illegal.

jammygem · 14/08/2022 11:11

From my (admittedly limited) understanding of the law, that photo is now deemed as an indecent image of a child anyway since the age was raised to 18 by the 2003 Sexual Offences Act.

While I'd normally not agree with any kind of destruction of property, if the managers were useless and didn't sort it out I think you had to take matters into your own hands. Although perhaps HR would have been the better route.
