Working out in back garden - neighbours complaining.

I had a baby a few months ago and trying to shift the baby weight which I have gained.

The last few mornings around 10:30am I have been going into our back garden to do a workout on apple fitness+. I have been wearing my headphones as quite frankly my neighbours don't need to hear the cheesy "come on, push it harder" motivation chat from the fitness instructor.

This morning after my workout (I do HIIT - 20 minutes), the neighbour next door came to the door and asked if I could work out inside as they are trying to relax in their back garden in peace and watch their fish. I was a bit taken aback. My DH heard this and came to the door and politely said that I'm not making lots of noise, it's day light and we are entitled to work out in our garden. He pointed out what will they think when our daughter is older and playing in the garden? The neighbour responded "that's different" Hmm and apparently my panting noises are a bit "erotic sounding". At this point we said to the neighbour that again, I'm not making excessive noise and that I'm simply working out. His response? "Well join a gym then"

I'm actually really annoyed. We have CCTV outside the property so I checked to hear how loud I am when working out and honestly hardly any noise, mostly just heavy breathing which the camera struggled to pick up. It's not like I'm making noises like Monica from friends when she gets her massage.

I also have a gym in the garage so why would I join a gym? We live in a detached house so no risk of noise to adjoining walls etc. there's not that much floor space to do the workouts inside the garage. Before baby I didn't do the HIIT.

The reason for me working out in the back garden is my DH is working from home and my baby is napping so I don't want to be creating noise inside to wake up baby or disturb DH working. If baby wakes up the monitor pings a notification to my phone so I will know if she is awake and will stop workout to tend to baby.

Neighbour only moved in about 6 months ago and never had any issues since.

Who is BU? Me or the neighbour?

Your neighbours are being absolutely ridiculous- I’d ignore them 100%. If anything, I’d ramp up the heavy breathing!

Enjoy the summer sun and being able to work out outside- as a fellow north of Scotland Scot, it’s a bloody long winter…

Rebelmcstreettuff · 12/08/2022 16:32

Ignore the miserable old bastard OP
You are probably making him feel frisky and he can't get it up anymore 😀
My neighbours have a home gym and I hear them pounding away on the treadmill but it's only for a short time so no biggie.

redbigbananafeet · 12/08/2022 16:35

I'd turn the 'erotic sounding' comment back on him. Tomorrow morning shout over "I hope no one is getting turned on and playing with themselves to the sound of me exercising in the privacy of my own garden! Disgusting!" But then that could cause an unnecessary war.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 hilarious and most probably true

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/08/2022 16:45

our neighbour had a running machine in the garden, that was annoying as it sounded like a train, but we didnt complain, because we are normal reasonable neighbours.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/08/2022 16:46

although i cant believe you are working out at 10.30 in the morning in this heat!!!><???

REP22 · 12/08/2022 13:47

I'd tell them that their fish are swimming too loudly, and could they ask their little piscine children to "tone down" their exuberant aquabatics.

Sounds like you were being very considerate, and in no way unreasonable. They're out of line.

I might also be tempted to consider a jar of tartare sauce as their Christmas present, but perhaps that's a step too far. 😉

😂😂😂😂😂

Pinkspice · 12/08/2022 16:55

I think I'm on the less tolerant side as regards noise pollution: can't stand people talking in cinemas or shouting in cafes, that kind of thing. But someone doing a workout in the morning for twenty minutes? Why on earth would that be unacceptable? Why don't they just go inside for those twenty minutes?

I wouldn't give into this kind of thing OP because if you cave in for this, theylll find twenty other things to moan about.

Beepbeepenergy · 12/08/2022 17:01

Tell em to jog on 😁

To some posters - I live in an upside down house - bedrooms downstairs and living space upstairs. Not ideal to be working out upstairs as noisy on the floor.

No pounding noise on the grass outside.

It doesn't matter what sort of house you live in! You're allowed to work out (along with pants, groans etc) in your own garden, that you own or rent!

After this, I'd be tempted to get some little speakers to boom the workout round the garden. Just mention to the NDN that it motivates you more.

Maybe you could invite a friend round, work out together and then mention to NDN that you're thinking about being a Personal Trainer on the side, to get some extra income, you know, what with bills rising etc. Wink

But that's the thing - they probably can't! OP can though!

PP has already said she's in Scotland where it isn't hot.

inmyslippers · 12/08/2022 17:05

They sound unhinged

Aubree17 · 12/08/2022 17:07

They can suck it up for 20 minutes.
Good for you for not been deterred.
If they come at you again tell them you'll be working out from 10-10.20 and they can have the other 14 hours of daylight in peace to watch their fish.
It sounds quite selfish when you put it like that!

KettrickenSmiled · 12/08/2022 17:10

apparently my panting noises are a bit "erotic sounding"

Next time they complain, retaliate with your own complaint.

Your neighbour has sexualised your entirely prosaic & un-noisy workout, & is thus objectifying you. His little speech to you sound like the words of a sex pest.
He sounds like the type to blame young women wearing vest tops for his leering & unwelcome commentary.

TL:DR "fuck off pervert & don't look at me again."

berksandbeyond · 12/08/2022 17:24

YANBU but I don't understand how your workout is somehow silent in the garden but too noisy to do inside or you'll disturb your husband working or baby napping?

Madamecastafiore · 12/08/2022 17:27

Put a pornographic movie on through speakers in the garden and go out for the afternoon.

thinkfast · 12/08/2022 17:32

Your neighbours barking. He's complains basically about the sound of you breathing in your own garden? Confused

GettingReal · 12/08/2022 17:33

Just a suggestion - maybe you should wear clothes as well as your headphones in future?

(Laughing myself sick at the tartare sauce idea!)

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 12/08/2022 17:35

YANBU - but your grunting & groaning & panting noises are PRECISELY why I won’t let anyone come look no dosyance cycling with me as I sound like a (very) bad over egging it pornstar from tbe 1870s.

actually, if on reflection you sound anything like me cycling uphill, then maybe your neighbours are NBU - as it dies sound like full on s x noise (and then some )

I've explained upthread :)

Would he say the same if it was your husband's work-out gasping and grunting? I doubt it. Because that's the sort of manly thing you expect from a bloke, innit. Not from a lady, not unless they are, you know, sex noises.

The man is a sexist arse.

moistmingemist · 12/08/2022 17:50

Jealous wife enraged husband sat in garden wanking over neighbour working out - one for the journalists 🤣🤣

LondonLovie · 12/08/2022 17:53

Christ on a bike. Your garden- and you are keeping fit having a bloody orgy.

I would really need to tell them to fuck to fuck off tbh. Some people don't know they are born when it comes to good neighbours

But no, journalists, please bugger off and don't use my thread to claim off as your 'work'
