I know that it's a nuclear power, but we wouldn't really need to go nuclear? Just take him out?

Is it Putin's war or Russia's war?

Why have we not assassinated him?

I don’t think Putin is really the issue. He’s like the squeaky wheel. China is the main issue to the destabilisation of the West and there is precisely zero we can do about that.

I think that the West is pretty unstable right now!

So we're afraid of people who might be worse than Putin?

How much worse can you get?

Well puttin hasn't launched a near missile yet. So he is showing some restrain

4 sitting US presidents have been assasinated. Abraham Lincoln (1865, by John Wilkes Booth), James A. Garfield (1881, by Charles J. Guiteau), William McKinley (1901, by Leon Czolgosz), and John F. Kennedy (1963, by Lee Harvey Oswald).

I know we're spun tales but could we not just assassinate Putin and blame on some loon?

Yes but by individuals, not by other sovereign states.

How do you propose an assassin gets close enough to Putin to be able to kill him? He is surrounded by security/armed forces personnel/bodyguards who are loyal to him, he generally puts people he is meeting at the other end of a metres long table from him, and I imagine he has someone taste his food before he eats it to check it's not poisoned.

Yes the West may be unstable but we are not in the midst of a world war with nuclear weapons

@Dalint the West and Putin have managed to bumble on for years. He may be seen as preferable to someone more extreme. Surely that's not that hard to imagine.

And if you, the people, want to assasinate him, why don't you go ahead and do it? We've given you loads of reasons why governments haven't.

You yourself, or you are speaking for the people?

It’s not Putin acting independently, he’s not making all the decisions without support. I hate when 1 person becomes the enemy. There’s a whole government in Russia having meetings and making plans and giving orders based on those plans. Assassinating Putin doesn’t reset everything. Someone else steps into his place maybe they are better maybe they are worse.

do you want to dismantle the entire structure of the Russian government? Ok, how do we do that? Assassinate 100 people, then what happens?

im not pro Russia but 1 bullet isn’t going to fix anything.

“Vladimir Putin, to get on the good side of voters, goes to visit a school in Moscow to have a chat with the kids.
He talks to them about how Russia is a powerful nation and how he wants the best for the people.
At the end of the talk there is a section for questions.
Little Sasha puts her hand up and says, "I have two questions. Why did the Russians take Crimea and why are we sending troops to the Ukraine?"
Putin says, "Good questions". But just as he is about to answer the bell goes and the kids go to lunch.
When they come back, they sit down and there is room for some more questions. Another girl, Misha, puts her hand up and says "I have four questions. Why did the Russians invade Crimea, why are we sending troops to the Ukraine, why did the bell go 20 minutes early and where the fuck is Sasha?"😀

Ok, so let's take assassination off the table.

What other options have we? Clearly sanctions are not working!

OP posts:
Dalint · 12/08/2022 12:28

I said this in February. Sanctions against Russia, hurt us too. How much collective pain are we willing to take?

MN is full of extremely astute minds. We know that the energy crisis which could potentially collapse our economy is at the very least, in some way attributable to Putin. Why can't we come up with a fucking solution? He's not the greatest problem ever posed!

Gaddafi was killed by rebels during the Libyan Civil War. The west may have wanted the rebels to win but the regime change was instigated internally.

If rumours are correct Putin is not a well man. As soon as he appears weak someone in Russia will probably overthrow him.

The top of the Russian power structure is not a good place to show any sort of vulnerability.

Georgeskitchen · 12/08/2022 12:33

Surprised one of his own hasn't taken him out, tbh

Leaving aside the politics and rule of law, this ^^^.

Most of the leaders previously listed as being assassinated/killed/committed suicide were either in situations where the enemy was at the gates or inside them (Hitler, Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein etc ).

If the idea is it would be easy to "take him out" by parachuting in some Delta's, Hereford's finest or Jason Bourne into Russia then they need to reduce the number of Hollywood action movies they watch.

Reading the body language and tremor in the voice of this guy, I wouldn't necessarily conclude that we can't get near Putin, nor that everyone is entirely loyal to him.

There is no secret as to the reason, they think who will take over will be worse. Much worse and more of a threat. Putin is the mild option. When he goes it could be catastrophic.
