To think Shannon Matthews the Musical should be cancelled.

I'm not easily offended but I find this wildly insensitive and inappropriate.

shannonmatthews.co.uk/

That poor child was held hostage, drugged and went though a traumatic ordeal at the hands of her own mother and the peadophile boyfriend. Why anyone would want to make a musical comedy out of this awful display of child abuse I'll never know.

Who is actually going to pay to see this

Many people

It's sold out

Cam22 · 11/08/2022 17:26

Surely this is fake news? If not, it’s a bonkers idea.

I’m pretty sure the whole soundtrack is still available on YouTube.

liveforsummer · 11/08/2022 17:38

It's definitely not sold out but definitely is not fake news

Barry.

😂😂😂

This is pretty disgusting. Shannon must only be about 20ish by now, I agree it's extremely distasteful.

One of the taglines reads "borderline special needs uncle..." what in the actual hell. I have a DD with additional needs, and find that description gross too. I hope nobody buys a ticket.

Lots of people have bought tickets, several nights sold out, it's funny and doesn't mock Shannon in any way

AndrewB69 · 11/08/2022 13:21

It’s the best play since Hamilton. Give it a go. You might enjoy it.

How dare you! This is a disgusting comment to make! To compare it to Hamilton... It's the best musical since Rocky Horror Show, more like!

ReneBumsWombats · 11/08/2022 19:31

Yeah, I know you shouldn't judge things you haven't seen, but I do know some of Kunt's stuff and Lin Manuel-Miranda he ain't.

aidancky · 11/08/2022 23:22

It's really good. Really well written and performed. Open your minds and don't be a Mumsnet stereotype.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 11/08/2022 23:40

WTF?! Just had to Google to see if this was actually a thing, and it seems it is 😢
I love musicals, but what, singing and dancing over the abuse of a young girl who is still alive now, how is that in any way entertainment?!
God knows what the poor girl thinks about it all.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 11/08/2022 23:41

Fucking sick.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 11/08/2022 23:43

@Inkblotter genuinely interested to know in what way is it funny?
Trying to understand how it can be funny given the circumstances.

ReneBumsWombats · 11/08/2022 15:25

Yes but you still had to come over and attempt to provoke more outrage because what you saw, however funny you found it, wasn't enough for you. Same thing.

I'm just asking if you enjoy the show because it's clever, funny social satire or because the outrage makes you feel somehow superior. It seems to be the latter, because you're not discussing the show, you're just telling everyone how stupid they are. At least Kunt and the theatre company have done something creative and potentially made some serious, worthwhile commentary. You're no different to the people you're trying to wind up.

Yes because until Barry turned up there was no outrage to be seen anywhere in this thread.

Said nobody ever.

Also no idea why you're having a go at him...

...Barry didn't do it

kaytee75 · 12/08/2022 01:06

I don't think it's offensive or a problem at all. Although it is called The Shannon Matthews Musical it isn't actually about Shannon .
The musical makes fun of the adults involved in the case, Karen Matthews, Michael Donovan and Craig Meehan and that trip deserves no sympathy!
Shannon herself is now an adult with a new name, new family and new life. I'm sure she has way more things to worry about than this.
I've listened to the audio version and I thought it was really funny and very well put together.

Yes, she is now a young adult, but even if she does have a new family and a new name, she still has her memories, you don't know how it's affected her.
Unless you're her, you can't be "sure" of anything.

SuperPets · 09/08/2022 14:40

There are films, books, tv shows etc about everything, and much worse. What's your problem?

Don't like it, don't be tickets. Don't be that person screeching that things you don't like should be cancelled

I think there's a difference between "screeching" because something goes against your personal beliefs or sensitivities, and believing that something is just objectively wrong and should not exist which is the case here.

Society nowadays is so individualistic we're often afraid to point out when something is just plain immoral.

In many other issues I can allow space for personal beliefs and tastes but anyone who thinks this is appropriate is wrong, plain and simple.

Indeed nobody said that, or even implied it, except for you in this utterly nonsensical and pointless post.

Do you just like seeing your username on the screen? I suppose we all have to do what we must to survive.

Calm down, dear.

Siameasy · 12/08/2022 09:35

I laughed when I read the thread title. Humour is so subjective. I thought it was funny because the idea of someone making a musical out of it is really random and somewhat tasteless. I find tasteless things amusing.

Siameasy · 12/08/2022 09:36

The stock Mumsnet response though is “that poor poor girl/baby/woman/dog/ant”etc

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 12/08/2022 09:37

Those of us who want to go, WILL GO!!!!
So GO THEN, nobody's stopping YOU 🙄
It doesn't make you a Karen to think it's distasteful to make a musical out of someone's suffering though FFS
