To think Shannon Matthews the Musical should be cancelled.

I'm not easily offended but I find this wildly insensitive and inappropriate.

shannonmatthews.co.uk/

That poor child was held hostage, drugged and went though a traumatic ordeal at the hands of her own mother and the peadophile boyfriend. Why anyone would want to make a musical comedy out of this awful display of child abuse I'll never know.

Have to say, Barry, you seem to be enjoying the outrage at least as much as they are. You should be grateful that they're giving you what you want.

Loving it. Posts like this are comedy gold! Getting outraged over something you've not even seen and know absolutely nothing about. The world is a funny old place!

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 11/08/2022 14:55

At the very, very least the child and her family should be held in mind. I know they have anonymity but that is not the point at all because it would still affect her. Very insensitive if it happens.

Draughtycatflapreturns · 11/08/2022 14:58

Is that the show with the big first act number “It’s dusty here living under the bed”?

So is your appreciation because of its sharp social satire or just because you enjoy the outrage?

It sounds as though you're the counterpart to people who trawl the Internet looking for stuff to be offended by: someone who trawls the Internet looking for offended people. You're both the same, really.

Someone should write a show about that...

No, I was only aware of this thread because Kunt himself linked it on his Twitter due to some of the hilarious and unresearched comments.
I'm a fan of his work so thought I'd defend it while I had lunch. Passes the time, etc. I totally get the show isn't for most of the people on here so the OP is essentially playing to a home crowd, but it's really not as offensive and bad taste as people (the media) are making out. Especially if you actually know the real story.

Yes but you still had to come over and attempt to provoke more outrage because what you saw, however funny you found it, wasn't enough for you. Same thing.

I'm just asking if you enjoy the show because it's clever, funny social satire or because the outrage makes you feel somehow superior. It seems to be the latter, because you're not discussing the show, you're just telling everyone how stupid they are. At least Kunt and the theatre company have done something creative and potentially made some serious, worthwhile commentary. You're no different to the people you're trying to wind up.

Apologies for not addressing the show in my previous comment, I've been a fan of the Shannon Matthews the Musical CD (first released in 2010) since I first discovered Kunt many years ago. It's funny, lyrically clever, in line with the rest of his catalogue, and in my opinion not particularly in bad taste, but obviously that depends on your sensibilities.
The cast of the stage presentation are excellent. They keep the naivety of the original CD but also bring it to life and add to the humour.
I certainly don't enjoy things just because they are outrageous, I just happen to find Kunt's work hilarious and think he gets rough press sometimes.
I also don't think I'm superior or that the posters on here are stupid. I just find it frustrating when people post opinions based on little more than headlines.
I'm a big fan of healthy debate, but you can't have a healthy debate with someone who has no knowledge of the thing they are attempting to debate.

ReneBumsWombats · 11/08/2022 15:46

But you like that! And so does he! The marketing for the show actively courts it!

Then you can go off and laugh at everyone who is as offended as they're told to be for not being clever enough to get it, like you!

I haven't seen the show so I can't comment definitely, but I'll be very surprised if Shannon's suffering is the actual butt of the joke. As I said near the start of the thread, I expect it's more about skewering her family and the society that produced them.

But jeez, it's being overtly marketed as offensive so why complain if people believe it?

Inkblotter · 11/08/2022 15:48

neshtastic · 09/08/2022 17:35

Hitler is dead though. Shannon Mathews is still alive.

So if she was dead then it would be ok? So Maddy McCann on Ice would be acceptable to you?

I for one applaud K for having the kahunas to put on such a witty take on such a dark tale, with such catchy tunes 👍

Nope. I'm suggesting people should research befofre getting offended. That's all. Don't claim to be clever. Don't claim anyone on here is stupid. If anything I'm suggesting there is a laziness. It's easier to just be offended, rather than look into something yourself. It's just the way society is going. Cool name tho! Happy I'm not a wombat :-)

NCHammer2022 · 11/08/2022 16:02

I don’t know who this Kunt dude is but he has a good line in sock puppets.

Also, you call yourself Kunt & the Gang and have a musical ensemble playing at the Edinburgh Fringe and that’s not middle class? Give me a break.

ReneBumsWombats · 11/08/2022 16:04

Nope. I'm suggesting people should research befofre getting offended.

Well actually, people have as much right to be offended as you have to be offensive, but anyway. If that was your purpose, maybe discuss the show when you first come blundering in rather than just laughing at the outrage while blatantly trying to cause more. Now if you do try to explain the true nature of the show, it's obscured by the crap. You lost your opportunity to enlighten.

EdSt · 11/08/2022 16:06

Sounds like you are easily offended.

MavisM · 11/08/2022 16:07

Have you taken the time to find and listen to it or are you offended by a concept without hearing it in full? It’s hilarious. Hopefully all you’re doing is promoting to those who will listen to it and/or discover Ku*t and the Gangs other materials which are equally as amusing. Just because you find it distasteful doesn’t mean it should be cancelled. Just move on. Seriously mustn’t have anything better to do!

But be honest, it's fun (albeit frustrating) to watch the sheep being offended by something they've not even seen. It's doing the ticket sales wonders!

MavisM · 11/08/2022 16:15

Only reason I’m here! 😂

It appears I lost the opportunity to enlighten when I logged in!
1 - I'm not being offensive.
2 - So you believe people have the right to be offended by something they have no knowledge of and haven't seen? I have no argument!
But cheers for giving me something to do over lunch :-)

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/08/2022 16:19

You people are just lazy and love being outraged.

////

It's interesting as some groups of people in Scotland lose their shit over suffragette ribbons on benches. But a production like this is fair game.

And regardless of whether SM is merely referenced the play wouldn't have been written without her experience. So yes, scraping a cheap barrel for a few laughs.

Lunalae · 11/08/2022 16:22

You're all so against cancel culture until it's something you want to cancel.

Just don't go and see it. They're free to perform it. You're free to not watch it. People's personal experiences are not their sole property. Unfortunately it gets splashed all over the papers and becomes public.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/08/2022 16:25

I'm not calling for this to be cancelled just voicing an opinion it's not my thing as I don't enjoy comedy like this . Each to his own and that's the great thing about MN

I'm very against cancel culture which mainly targets women (often by men) when it's accompanied with doxxing (sp), grassing to the local constabulary, death and rape threats.

People have the right to be offended by anything at all!

That's very different to saying they don't have the right to create potentially offensive stuff. But, I don't know, why sell a show as being offensive then complain when people believe you?

ThatSticksman · 11/08/2022 16:59

I don't get offended as it doesn't really mean anything other than how I feel. I don't get offended on anyone else's behalf because I don't know how they feel, I'm not them. This musical was written and produced as an album only 2 years after the events, using talent sourced from the area of the subject, and most of it is looking fun at the family for thinking they'd get away with it. "I've Got A Plan Based On Maddie McCann" being a prime example. Then the discovery that the step dad was a paedophile, if anything these things need satirising to keep them in the public eye to ensure it doesn't happen again. 12 years after he made the album and 14 since the crime was committed, that's plenty long enough for someone else to think of trying something similar.

A million times this. Always the same with the supposed anti ‘cancel culture’ crowd.

I’ve enjoyed some Kunt and the Gang things in the past but didn’t think this musical (which he released on CD some years ago) was very good tbh.
