No kids yet, but I'm hoping to have them in the near-ish future, work in the early childhood sector and have a young niece and nephew so I'm quite aware of what's popular with the little ones these days, but I'm personally not a fan and would rather not expose my own children to any of that media, at least not when they're very small - but I've heard a lot of criticism of this approach, that "only crunchy hippie mums do that!" and "it's part of our culture, you're depriving them of an important part of childhood!" Specifically I'd be avoiding Disney, Cocomelon, and the Wiggles, and even things I don't mind wouldn't be on baby's clothes & other belongings as I don't believe in turning your child into free advertising for a popular brand. I'm otherwise not very "hippie" or "crunchy", this is just the one thing where I'd like to limit their exposure.

So... tell me I'm not the only one who wants to do this?

Call me crusty all you like, the "culture" out there now is NOT like when my eldest was little (15 years ago) and certainly not like when I was little!

Well of course it changes, all culture does. What makes you think children's culture us worse now than it was then?

I think it will be virtually impossible to avoid 'Disney' - that's such a wide range of films, merchandise etc. And annoying as they may be, The Wiggles are pretty harmless!

I know some people on here dislike Peppa Pig, but my dd watched it every day, and had the dvds. She's always been the kindest, most sensitive (too sensitive!) child and teen, so I can't see Peppa's done her any harm. Unless kids are given literally no other influences/role models, a cartoon isn't going to set them on the wrong life path.

I have fond memories of a holiday to Lanzarote with DD when she was 18 months old

‘ABC Kids Tv! Has rebranded as…. Cocomelon!’

the songs were so catchy and they are educational.
and people can say what they like about Peppa Pig, atleast she speaks properly and clearly unlike some of them.

Parenting is a lot easier when your kids are hypothetical but if this is the hill you're willing to die on then go for it.

She obviously missed the Quentin Tarantino-directed episode Peppa Goes Apeshit: Chainsaws At Dawn.

Actually, disney more recently has had some really decent storylines (moral of the story iyl), and unless you plan on living in a bubble, you've got a very small chance of success. Pick the ones you cannot stand for personal sanity and avoid those. Mine were Peppa Pig (spoilt little sh!t) and teletubbies (talk properly for col) but otherwise, you'll drive yourself insane trying to avoid everything.

We all plan to cook home made organic meals and ban screen trine until the teenage years.

In reality by the time your on your third kid, they are watching peppa pig with a McDonald's by 18 months old.
