To ask if you’d expect more food at this wedding?

We’re getting married next month and starting to have a panic that we aren’t providing enough food. Ceremony is at 2.30, so everyone will be arriving at the reception between 3.30-4 ish. We’re having a bbq starting at around 5pm

Bbq foods are as follows, and each person can have one of every item if they want to
Burgers
Hot dogs
Chicken skewers
Prawn skewers
Veggie/vegan options
Chips
Salad, coleslaw, potato salad etc

We've also got a cheese table with various choices, crackers, pork pies etc and a dessert table with cakes, brownies and donuts which are both coming out at about 8.30pm

Would you then expect another substantial food option with the cheese and snacks table, such as hot food or a buffet or something!? We're expecting the bbq to be done with by around 6.30, but they can keep going as long as we want them to, and the venue closes at 12pm.

Sounds better than Boris and Carrie's

Avelora · 06/08/2022 18:29

@Lds1 yes I didn’t explain it too well, there are at least that many to make sure that every person gets at least one of each option. They keep cooking as people go up so more food can be added, so if someone wants 4 hotdogs they can have 4 and that won’t leave anyone else unable to have them

Ask that the caterers platter up all that is left at 'closing ' for picking at later. A friend of mine was distraught their caterers boxed the lot up and took it away!! All had been paid for yet it was disposed of!!

Yes this is how it works, and the bonus of doing a BBQ rather than a standard buffet. I used to work as a waitress for wedding where BBQ was an option and there was always loads to go around and leftovers (which we ate on our break 🤣)

Gizlotsmum · 06/08/2022 18:31

Do you have vegan /veggie options to go with the cheese and desserts?

RandomMess · 06/08/2022 18:31

I agree with the left overs being left out/brought out a bit later for picking at then the deserts 9ish

PandaOrLion · 06/08/2022 18:32

I think you need something later, either leftovers or cheese/cake.

also, assuming you don’t have anyone who is gluten free? BBQs are a nightmare for me so if you do it’s worth keeping in mind what their options are!

PrezelwithMarmite · 06/08/2022 18:32

I went to a wedding then reception was a bbq at 5.30. They then had buffet around 8.30pm. I looked and thought that there was way too much. But is say 90% was eaten

Avelora · 06/08/2022 18:34

@cherrybonbons we can always ask them to start the bbq earlier, we just picked a random time but they will be on site setting up before everyone gets there, so they could kick off as soon as everyone arrives if that’s a better way of doing it

OP posts:
Avelora · 06/08/2022 18:35

@PandaOrLion we don’t no, but we did make sure we hired a company who can cater for any allergies just in case!

YY to keeping leftovers for later. I would also put out cheese etc later.

There will always be someone who thinks you have over/under catered. We had someone at our wedding who went home and ordered a takeaway…but I was unable to finish my meal at their wedding, and DH and I didn’t even manage half of the late night snack option between us (and we are good eaters!). As long as you have provided enough food, at various intervals, don’t take it personally.

Littleraindrop15 · 06/08/2022 18:36

I think people will be travelling to get to the venue etc might not have had lunch etc and it's kind of a long day from 2.30pm to midnight with just the one slot for eating.

I'd definitely do something around 9pm like desserts cheese board and maybe some sandwiches, fruit trees, crisps something etc

are you having kids at the wedding adults can sustain but I think it might be hard for kids.

Avelora · 06/08/2022 18:36

@PandaOrLion we do have a cheese table and a dessert table coming out later already, we just weren’t sure if we needed more on top of that too

"We’ve also got a cheese table with various choices, crackers, pork pies etc and a dessert table with cakes, brownies and donuts"

I'd keep that back & serve @ 21.00.

easyday · 06/08/2022 18:37

Yes I'd provide something more than cheese. But it doesn't have to be hot - sandwiches and some cold salads would be fine, laid out buffet style.

Hillary17 · 06/08/2022 18:37

Just keep the cheese and cakes open all evening and people will nibble!

sugarspiceplumfairy · 06/08/2022 18:38

Just do cake at 8ish that’ll tide people over

sugarspiceplumfairy · 06/08/2022 18:39

Sounds lovely btw

BelleMarionette · 06/08/2022 18:40

As long as there is plentiful food at the meal time, that's fine. You can stagger the cake later as you said, and have the cheese and presumably crackers later. A vegan option when cheese is out would be appreciated

marrymeadam · 06/08/2022 18:40

Vegans and veggies have a raw deal. The omnivores have 4 options that they can have one of each of. Are there 4 options? I can't eat dairy or pork or prawns so I could have a burger and a bit of chicken.

Avelora · 06/08/2022 18:44

@marrymeadam we have vegetarian and vegan sausages, lentil and bean burgers, halloumi burgers and roasted veg and halloumi skewers. We also have vegan cheese as well as dairy free cheese options to cater for a few people coming who don’t eat dairy

OP posts:
RosiePosie27 · 06/08/2022 18:45

I would get a few extra of each (some people may want 2 burgers or 2 hotdogs). Just get an extra 10 or so of each as a spare. Get lots of fillers - bread / potatoes / salad etc. sounds lovely tho!

Sorry, I’d misread it as they were out at the same time as the bbq

She said there are vegan sausages, bean burgers, halloumi and something else, reserved for vegans and veggies only.

WithABiffBangPow · 06/08/2022 18:49

It's plenty of food.
If I'm at a wedding and sit down at 6.30 with a huge plate of food and then follow it up with both cheese and dessert, I'm probably not going to be gagging for a slice of pizza 2 hours later. And I can eat more than your average bear.
