To ask how much your current power costs are?

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/08/2022 11:06

I hate to ask but with this being headline news every day I am wondering how much this will personally affect me. I’m hearing £3000 a year etc but don’t know what this will mean for me. Is anybody willing to share their current costs and if they know how much they are likely to.pay when costs increase. So the flexible tariff folk - what are you predicting based on your current usage etc.

I am with Eon for gas and electric. I have a smart meter and I am currently paying around £70 per month. Eon set my DD as £105 so I am hoping to build in a bit of a buffer.

4 bed detached new build. £140/month for gas and electricity. I still on 5p/kWh at night and 15p/kWh during the day but this will change in October.

It will depend on what's available to you when your tariff ends. I'm still in the dark but the current Octopus Go tariff is 7.5p and 39p respectively. That's a huge change for the daytime rate. Standing charge is also almost double (25p vs 45p).

But this is just for electricity as I'm more focused on that (I have an EV). My guess is that my bill will double at least. I think your bill might well do the same.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 06/08/2022 11:25

I’m with Scottish power and I have been paying £207 per for both for few years and then I got the email last month saying I actually use less but paying a lot so my bill has come down to £121.00 a month on both. I have smart meters too

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 06/08/2022 11:29

Forgot to add it’s a large 4 bedroom detached house and I use more electricity than gas

BarbaraPickle · 06/08/2022 11:31

Large 5 bedroom house but there's only me in it. I'm paying £46 combined but my usage is currently less than that.

cardibach · 06/08/2022 11:32

Martin Lewis says the prediction is for about 78% increase in October, so multiply it up.
I say that casually instead of telling you the future because I can’t do sums. Maybe you can…

cardibach · 06/08/2022 11:32

Telling you the figure*
Not future. Apparently I can’t type either.

Wherearemymarbles · 06/08/2022 11:37

They seem to be saying c 45p kWr for electrisity and 12p kWh for gas
if

MomwasCasual · 06/08/2022 11:37

Our actual spend is around £146 at the moment (standard variable) and the direct debit is £200 to build a small buffer. I'm not prepared to pay more than that currently.

It's expected to rise 78% in Oct so I guess my £146 will become 146 x 1.78 = £259.88

Wherearemymarbles · 06/08/2022 11:39

So if you know your usage you can work out your bills. Ours went from £125 to £305 and will be £450

our gas consumption is the killer

nounderwire · 06/08/2022 11:41

4 bed house, according to our smart meter we're currently spending about £90/month but our direct debit is £200 so hoping to build a buffer as PP's. I have to admit we recently moved and have a lot of other stuff going on at the moment - DH has been in charge of arranging/managing our utilities so I haven't been paying as close attention to energy payments as I should. It's on the list for this month to make sure i read more about it so we're prepared for winter.

dementedpixie · 06/08/2022 11:41

My Current prices (variable rate) are:

Electricity 27.84p/kwh and 49.38p s/c
Gas 7.33p/kwh and 27.22p s/c

Monthly amount is a bit meaningless as it depends on your usage.

DancingSlow · 06/08/2022 11:45

Currently £240 per month so maybe over £400 soon. We’re in credit currently but not by much.

lifeworthliving · 06/08/2022 11:45

We are with octopus.
We've been paying £73 DD a month, until now. Got an email yesterday stated that now we are in - £1240 on our account, and they advised that we chance our DD to £226 a month and add an extra £130 until August 2023 so our account will be around nil.

lifeworthliving · 06/08/2022 11:46

5 bed barn conversion, and that only for electricity as we have an oil tank

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/08/2022 11:46

3 bed plus home office ,120 per month up from £80. Octopus told me it will be £700 in October!

LilacSky95 · 06/08/2022 11:50

I'm with british gas, I Currently pay £150 a month direct debit, but according to the app I'm not paying enough 😖 no idea what I'm going to do come October as I I literally can't afford any more. My direct debit was only £85 a month until this April, and jumped up to £150

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/08/2022 11:50

Our DD was upped from £130 a month to £220 earlier this year but based on my reading a few days ago they have suggested reducing it to £155. I was going to set it to £300 to prepare for winter but I’ve put it back to £220 for now to see how we go. I’m expecting at least £300 a month after October. I think there’s been a false sense of security as the price hikes only happened in April after the months where the hearing is on.

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/08/2022 11:51

*heating

Sirzy · 06/08/2022 11:52

3 bed house on eon standard variable. Use just over £100 a month on average paying £150 so got a bit of a buffer. Can’t cut down use anymore so hoping the buffer and the money towards bills will stop it increasing too much

FAQs · 06/08/2022 11:54

3 bed electric and gas £65 per month, currently in a little bit of credit, if it goes up 78% the £400 will cover some of it. But will start to top up from September.

lechatnoir · 06/08/2022 11:59

How on earth has your mortgage increased by £1k (assuming no additional borrowing)?!

These figures are crazy - we pay £110pm elec & £90pm gas and those are our increased bills on a 4 bed house. Do you leave everything on all day or have the heating on, long showers?! I appreciate older houses will cost be more to heat but not relevant for 6 months of the year if you're sensible and yes a 5 bed could be massive, but still can't quite imagine how a bill could be 10 times ours.

lljkk · 06/08/2022 12:11

Hmmm... 4 bed det house exposed to elements. 2.3 adults who WFH a lot, + 1 early rising teen.

I'm thinking we'll get thru £600-£900 worth (of heating oil) by start August next year.

We have solar panels, & wood burner (free wood), which help.
Lekki DD is currently £65. Suppose (70% rise) it's £110/month from 1 October to 30 August next year. So our energy bill would go to in theory...

£600/£900 + £130 + £1210 = £1940 to £2240 in next year.

DisneyBaby · 06/08/2022 12:19

3 bed semi-detached 1930's house in SE London - £240 for gas and electric with British Gas. We were paying £140 until April and then they upped it £100.
I'm fully expecting it to be around £500 this time next year, what a rip off!

Dougieowner · 06/08/2022 12:30

4-Bed newbuild.
DD with Eon is £120pm (G&E).
I submit meter readings each month (have a SM but Eon say they can't always get a reading) and they immediately send me a breakdown of costs and for last month it was £75 (Inc the dreaded SC).

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/08/2022 13:34

Oh thank you all! So - yes I guess the adding 78% on to current usage makes the most sense! So based on current that’s around £125 but with no heating on and that’s the killer isn’t it? So I guess living frugally and putting a jumper on instead of swanning around in T-shirts as my mum is always accusing me we could call it maybe £120 based on usually usage. Adding 78% to that. Now that is a bit scary. That is taking me up to maybe £200??
I’m ok with maths but crap at visualising in context!! With all the scare stories where people are already saying they can’t afford theirs I was thinking but I’m fine!! Maybe I’ll be ok. I guess for many of us it really hasn’t hit us yet. £200 is scary. I’m about to start a new job so struggling to work out if I can afford to live! I very wildly accepted a .5 teaching contract! There again we are going to be offered that £67 per month for a few months so that’ll help.
What I think I will do now is increase my monthly dd so get a better buffer while the sun’s shining 😉 Think I’m currently paying £105 pcm. I’ll pop it up a bit. Maybe to £150 for now…
