To ask how much your current power costs are?

I hate to ask but with this being headline news every day I am wondering how much this will personally affect me. I’m hearing £3000 a year etc but don’t know what this will mean for me. Is anybody willing to share their current costs and if they know how much they are likely to.pay when costs increase. So the flexible tariff folk - what are you predicting based on your current usage etc.

I am with Eon for gas and electric. I have a smart meter and I am currently paying around £70 per month. Eon set my DD as £105 so I am hoping to build in a bit of a buffer.

@peonyprincess did you go onto a fixed tariff at that point?

Ylfa · 07/08/2022 14:24

I have a prepayment meter and put about £30 - £35 a month. It’s below £10 a week, no debt to pay off. Live alone, spend a day or two every couple of weeks batch cooking and baking but otherwise don’t use much at this time of year.

peonyprincess · 07/08/2022 15:26

Sadly not - none on offer. I have tried compare the market etc, but nothing cheaper- it’s just bonkers!!

LizzieSiddal · 07/08/2022 15:33

Electric is currently £169 per month, but was fixed in January before the first hikes, god knows what it will be when I come to renew.

We have an LPG gas tank but that hasn’t gone up at all, I’m too afraid to phone and ask them what’s going to happen.

I’ve just gone on and upped it to £155 pcm from September. So fingers crossed. Like I say - I can work on keeping heating costs down - I have a heated throw and I will go to work all day for 3 days… They have just opted for a 4 day week to improve our mental health and many staff leapt at the chance when polled. Maybe we’ll all be banging on the door begging to be let in on Fridays when this all kicks in 🙄

Unless you have zero commuting costs is it really going to save you anything?

inmyslippers · 07/08/2022 15:44

Mine was on fixed price which has just come to end. Was paying £40 gas and electricity. Now up to £90 flexi tariff. Two bed new build. We're out most of the day and certainly won't have the heating on come winter

WinterMusings · 07/08/2022 15:49

Allicando · 06/08/2022 16:14

I'm fixed on the old prices with eon until October 2023. By some fluke of good fate I swapped just before this whole shit show kicked off. Both teens will be at Uni next year so only me in the house most of the time and can reduce consumption much more.

But are the teens going to be self funding it will you be paying their bills?

WinterMusings · 07/08/2022 16:01

Why are so many people on SVR?

I understand some will be on them due to smaller companies shutting down & people being moved to new suppliers, but people who have chosen to be on SVR. Why?

my fix finished last year, the savings on the new fix were only £5 per year so I didn't bother immediately, but as soon as all this began rumbling on, I went on the new fixed tarrif (rates had gone up a bit in the meantime so I was kicking myself, but very glad I fixed it when I did.).

though I'm going to be massively when that ends, (dec23) so I'll have to be prepared for the whack when that happens. 🙄🙄

What were you daily standing charges? I couldn't get my G&E down to £40 at the old rates, even if the house was empty

yours is £90 now-what are your pkw rates & SC??

Because I was on a fix until February and when that ended there were no good fixes so I went onto the SVR. Most people are now on SVR as there are very few offers of decent fixes and most are offered to existing customers so people can't switch suppliers to get them

I really wasn't expecting mine to be the most on this thread (Current £336/Was £180). Oh dear. I guess I'm expecting it to go up to £500/mth ish 😱

Mine is nearly this high. I need to figure out where we can cut back.

boatahoy · 07/08/2022 16:58

We were £140 pm now £250 so I dread to think what it will be come October. My fixed rate ended coinciding with the hike in cost and we can't get a good rate. We are reluctant to tie ourselves into a high rate if prices drop a bit next year. Also reluctant to pay a high rate over the summer when we use much less energy if in a tied deal. There is no-one in the house most days every week so hoping that helps keep costs down a bit over winter.

inmyslippers · 07/08/2022 17:42

What were you daily standing charges? I couldn't get my G&E down to £40 at the old rates, even if the house was empty

Old rates

19.28 per kw electricity
3.83per kWh gas

New rates
42.24 electricity
7.34 gas

Pretty much doubled. We're out all day, it's a new build and very well insulated. Only me and my son. Turned everything off at sockets and rarely used the dryer. Don't know how we can possibly economise anymore

BaileySharp · 07/08/2022 18:30

We pay 150 a month. Martin Lewis said to expect this to be about 250 a month in October. Houseus EPC B so fairly energy efficient but we struggle with hot weather so use fans a lot and are quite heavy technology users

woulducouldushouldu · 07/08/2022 19:34

DD has been increased to £490 pm. Large Victorian semi.

Lunar270 · 09/08/2022 08:06

Just to update, octopus have kindly put me on their Go tariff again, which is fixed till October 23.

Day rate 39.35p per kWh
Night rate 7.50p per kWh
Standing charge 44.48p per day

Previously

Day rate 23p per kWh
Night rate 5p per kWh
Standing charge 25p per day

So roughly 50% all round but I'll take that and will cut my usage as best I can.

It would be a good time to buy a PowerWall or other battery system but am currently working out the break even point.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 10/08/2022 18:23

That looks pretty decent for Elec @Lunar270 😉

I came back here (I did spend a lot of time on the ‘Stop telling me how much your DD is’ thread yesterday. Very similar to this one - and probably many more! Isn’t this just on all of our minds at the moment! I feel I have become obsessed!

Following new news yesterday I fixed with Eon. 1 year. No exit fee. Elec 52.39p and gas 13.27p. Standing charges 45p for elec and 27p for gas. According to MSE that’s an increase of 71% on cap so it’s pretty decent. Well as much as an immense hike in expenditure can be decent! Now to wait it out… eyes on the smart meter! Of course non of us will really know till after Oct and the cold weather kicks in.
This sodding gamble. That’s what is pissing me off most. Still the energy companies trying to make as much money from us as they can. Otherwise can’t we have the bloody cheapest they can afford to give us? Whether that’s a set price or below it whichever’s cheaper. Then we would all be better off.

British Gas On pre payment meter

19p kWh elec 7p kWh gas

Spending maybe £50 a month elec and £20 a month has at present. Oldish 4 bed, 4 bath, 3 storey house

I'm with eon, did a meter reading yesterday. 4 bed house with 4 adults living in it 24/7 ( combination of retired and wfh) a ton of electronics/computer stuff going all day every day. Boys are often up half the night too. This was my bill. Electric for 10 weeks and Gas for a week (not sure why they weren't both read together)

To ask how much your current power costs are?
nokidshere · 10/08/2022 18:32

Oh, meant to say, we are on their lowest tariff but it's not fixed.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2022 18:46

@nokidshere the screenshot doesn't detail what your tariff is so cant be used as a comparison

nokidshere · 10/08/2022 18:53

Tariff

To ask how much your current power costs are?
dementedpixie · 10/08/2022 18:54

Ah so it's the standard variable rate tariff then

Onionbhajisandwich · 10/08/2022 19:00

We are (we’re) with bulb - haven’t been assigned a new supplier yet. Live in a 3 bed semi and are paying DD £220 per month gas and electric currently. We are about £600 in credit and our actual usage currently is about £100 per month. I won’t be upping our direct debit in October.

teenagetantrums · 10/08/2022 19:21

We fixed in April with eon for a year gas 7.48kwh. electric 28.41 kWh.
Standing charges are high 27.22 and 51.63 a day.
Last month's bill was £55ish. We are £200 in credit pay £67 a month. 2 bedroom flat. We haven't really tried to cut our usage down but will try before winter although live in South West and don't normally put the heating on until November.
