I hate to ask but with this being headline news every day I am wondering how much this will personally affect me. I’m hearing £3000 a year etc but don’t know what this will mean for me. Is anybody willing to share their current costs and if they know how much they are likely to.pay when costs increase. So the flexible tariff folk - what are you predicting based on your current usage etc.

I am with Eon for gas and electric. I have a smart meter and I am currently paying around £70 per month. Eon set my DD as £105 so I am hoping to build in a bit of a buffer.

£120 per month for both gas and electricity, fixed in April 2021. 3 bed cottage. We tend to use the open fire (logs) a lot in winter

Transformatio · 06/08/2022 13:41

£336 (smart meter) this month - up from £180 before the price hike.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 06/08/2022 13:44

160 a month, but have fixed price until next spring, thankfully.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/08/2022 13:45

I’ve just gone on and upped it to £155 pcm from September. So fingers crossed. Like I say - I can work on keeping heating costs down - I have a heated throw and I will go to work all day for 3 days… They have just opted for a 4 day week to improve our mental health and many staff leapt at the chance when polled. Maybe we’ll all be banging on the door begging to be let in on Fridays when this all kicks in 🙄

We were paying £65pm, which increased to £116pm, but Bulb have revised their estimate and now want £108pm. If we stick to our typical usage, we're thinking it's going to be close to £190pm, although we're doing our best to cut back.

Transformatio · 06/08/2022 16:01

I really wasn't expecting mine to be the most on this thread (Current £336/Was £180). Oh dear. I guess I'm expecting it to go up to £500/mth ish 😱

Haybo26 · 06/08/2022 16:08

4 bed detached bungalow. £246 a month with Eon Next. We have fixed for 2 years so thank god wont be affected by October increase. We are also in credit although I expect that will be eaten in to in the Winter months.

the80sweregreat · 06/08/2022 16:13

Mine was 180 a month , but as we are in credit it's gone down to 154. 3 bed semi south East.
The 400 from the govt will help in October ( or however and whenever that is being paid ) and if its a mild winter it should still be a bit in credit by January, but who knows? It'll probably go up again when it's the really cold months.
Like everyone else I'll try and cut down , but when it's cold and dark by four pm it's not easy to sit in the dark etc!
I fear that people with big families or already struggling to pay their bills will really find it so hard. Food is now so expensive we have cut down on this too.

Allicando · 06/08/2022 16:14

I'm fixed on the old prices with eon until October 2023. By some fluke of good fate I swapped just before this whole shit show kicked off. Both teens will be at Uni next year so only me in the house most of the time and can reduce consumption much more.

Christmasiscomingitis · 06/08/2022 16:14

3 bed family of 6, costing us £80-90 a month this summer. We are not fixed.

Indoctro · 06/08/2022 16:17

Large detached 5 bed house

£300 quarterly for electric

We have a oil tank and a log burner for heating.

nutbrownhare15 · 06/08/2022 16:21

Average bill used to be around £80 per month for gas and electric prior to all the price rises. 3 bed Edwardian semi detached. Direct debit has gone up to £133 per month, I checked our actual usage based on meter readings and it averaged £120 so was happy with the new DD. I guess this will go up to £200 ish this winter. We are frugal with heating as it is but will be even more so now although as we have two kids we will prioritise their comfort.

BabyDreamers · 06/08/2022 16:25

I have prepayment meters so pay as I go. My app shows I spent £78 electric and £18 gas last month. I don't understand how some people's are so high. We sleep with fans on every night and I don't go around unplugging things and turning lights off.

Clovacloud · 06/08/2022 16:28

1930s 3 bed semi in East Anglia. With Scottish Power July’s actual usage was £136.24 but for some reason they have put our DD up to £183.00 Hmm

Electric is 35.67p a unit and gas is 7.34p

BabyDreamers · 06/08/2022 16:28

I'm with utilita.

soupmaker · 06/08/2022 16:33

With Eon Next. Have a 3 bed end of terrace in Scotland. Currently on a fix until October and pay DD of £120 month. We have a smart meter. Usually in credit at this time of the year but currently £20 in debit. Monthly costs over summer for both under £70. Am absolutely dreading going onto the variable rate in October. Implementing a regime of 5 minute showers, everything off standby, turning down radiators in bedrooms and everyone wearing more layers. We already run a cool house, thermostat at 18 degrees.

Proudboomer · 06/08/2022 16:35

June 22 to July 21 my last bill
Standing charge 30 days at 39.67p per day £11.90
Energy use charge 222.13 kWh at 28.08p £62.37

Gas
Standing charge 30 days at 25.92p per day £7.78
Energy use charge 498.62 kWh at 6.97p £34.75
Credits, discounts and VAT
VAT 5% of £116.80 £5.84
Total Charges £122.64 out

4 bed detached with a small one room plus bathroom annex.
5 adults

dreading winter as my highest monthly bill last winter was over £400. I have been overpaying as a buffer plus my mum will get the increased winter fuel allowance

WaitingForWinter1 · 06/08/2022 16:37

I'm in a 3 bedroomed semi. There are 2 of us having a shower every day. (it runs off the gas) Washer is on every day (husband does a dirty job) We've got a smart meter (waste of time) which shows that we've used very little each week. Our cheap fixed tariff on Eon has changed, and they want to change our DD from £145 to £212 a month. I said no, and the minimum they'll accept is £191 so I agreed to that (we're £40 in credit)

Karwomannghia · 06/08/2022 16:43

£230 a month for both. Currently £146 in credit.
we’re with bulb.
in a 4 bed- family of 5

TheSoundOfMucus · 06/08/2022 16:48

4 bed Victorian terrace. 2 adults home all day, 2 children. Loads of tech but good with appliances (plan laundry around weather forecast, haven’t used tumble drier since March) , lights, heating use etc. currently paying 110 pm , dd is 190 and credit balance is 500 currently. We’re with OVO, no idea about unit price and on a SM.

Svara · 06/08/2022 16:58

Currently £90 a month direct debit on a fix until March. Electric 1100kwh, gas 5100kwh. On the cap would be £80, on the October cap £140, based on yearly usage.

Afterfire · 06/08/2022 17:02

You need to know how much you’re using each day. Do you have a smart meter and check your daily usage? It’s no good hearing what other people pay because their circumstances will be different to yours.

We found by using our home display we can see how much we average each day (about 11-14kw in electric, hardly anything in gas) and we can tweak things we use to try and keep it as low as possible - we are a high use family as 2 of us are disabled and we do a lot of washing etc (all eco low temperature wash now).

We currently pay £250 a month with Octopus. We can’t afford any more than that so I’m not sure what we are going to do come October etc. We will get some help from the government because we receive certain benefits but even then we are still going to be unable to have our heating on at all.

Svara · 06/08/2022 17:12

If you just read your annual estimated usage off your bill then you can work out based on current rates then times 1.78 (78% higher). Or mine says the annual cost on there based on my current tariff, if that is already the SVR for you then you should be able to just times those costs by 1.78 and divide by 12 to get monthly.

Beecham · 06/08/2022 17:23

£353 for 5 bed older house, 5-6 people.

Was £240 before April.

peonyprincess · 07/08/2022 14:16

Hi OP, we’re with Eon. Ours is ridiculous. In October last year our monthly direct debit was £260 a month. By April it had gone up to £780 a month - I mean, WTF, that’s insane!!! It’s exactly THREE TIMES what it was 6 months ago, and our usage hasn’t changed at all!!! God knows what it’ll be if prices go up again..
