What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

No it isn’t. There are animals that change sex. Doubtless one day biological science / genetic engineering will make it feasible in other animals. Take that how you will.

So it's still a biological fact referring to humans, now.

When I was about 8 we would go to watch our team in the afternoon and I was very surprised that they knew exactly how to replay the match for Grandstand later that evening.

Yup the beaver post was funny. Nothing funny about the ideology that medicalises gay and autistic children. Nothing to do with "transphobia". Many trans people are rational & against what is being done in their name.

That people can change their sex.

Another vote for this.

It's the modern day "flat earthers".

qazxc · 04/08/2022 12:42

A lady in my knitting group believes that the world was created fully formed in seven days, as described in the Bible. Doesn't "believe" in evolution or science.

cafenoirbiscuit · 04/08/2022 12:43

That if I open my eyes under water they will fall out of my head.

SandAndSea · 04/08/2022 12:44

I think it's pretty batshit to label other people's beliefs as batshit, when you clearly haven't done a lot of research into that thing yourself.

JamTuesday · 04/08/2022 12:44

A variation on flat Earth was the belief that the Earth was a Mobius strip (think that's from The Wasp Factory)

If you pee in a swimming pool the chlorine will turn purple and everybody will know what you did.

Bladed · 04/08/2022 12:48

I have a horrible feeling the teenage boy who didn’t believe girls/women could do “number 2’s” might have been my ds! He came out with this gem one day while sitting with me and dd. We genuinely didn’t know what to say to him - not that we could’ve said much through the tears of laughter …

turkeyboots · 04/08/2022 12:48

That to save yourself from a stomach bug after swimming in polluted water, all you need to do is have a can of fizzy drink. It repels norovirus apparently.
From a leaflet from an open water swimming race than over 500 people got!

JamTuesday · 04/08/2022 12:48

If you swallow chewing gum it will wind round your heart and kill you.

thing47 · 04/08/2022 12:48

My husband had a teacher [admittedly many decades ago] who told them that people used to believe lots of unscientific superstitious nonsense, for example they thought the moon influenced the tides.

It does! The gravitational forces of the Sun and the Moon together with the rotation of the Earth affects sea levels @VeronicaBeccabunga.

Though presumably the flat earthers dispute this as they don't believe the Earth rotates.

ARabbitisaBunny · 04/08/2022 12:48

Someone on our FB community page posted a picture of a dead bird she’d come across on a walk and was seriously panicking because she was convinced ‘the government’ had killed it.

awonderfuladventure · 04/08/2022 12:49

That the Daily Fail is an award winning paper and speaks nothing but the truth 😂😡

AlannaOfTrebond · 04/08/2022 12:50

I had a friend who thought Albania was a made up country from Harry Potter. It wouldn't have been quite so bad if we hadn't been working on the east coast of Corfu for 3 months by then - the Albanian coast is about a mile away across a channel.

She also thought the Channel Tunnel was made out of glass and you could see all the fish swimming around when you drove through it..

I thought this when I was younger 🥴

Didn't David Lamy say Men can have a cervix, and since he is a well respected politician.
Well it must be right then. He wouldn't try to trick us would he?

Enjoying the funny stories about beavers far more than the goady transphobe posts

Just because you believe something batshit doesn’t mean it’s goady for other people to point out that it’s batshit.

This drivel about men being women is even more batshit than the stuff about Hilary Clinton keeping children in tunnels or whatever it is, because at least that is theoretically possible.

JamTuesday · 04/08/2022 12:57

In the 70s there were lots of "New Age" beliefs, the First Earth Battalion Operations Manual and the US Military conducting experiments into stopping a goat's heart just by staring at it. The Men Who Stare at Goats - Jon Ronson.

MsTSwift · 04/08/2022 12:58

An ex was adamant Enid Blyton was a man and wouldn’t believe otherwise.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 12:59

Yes the “animals can change sex” thing. Why don’t people think this through? Some animals can change sex or are both sexes at once. Some animals can fly, turn themselves inside out, have babies without male cells, eat wood, dive 2000m down in the sea holding their breath, etc. by this argument, the same people should be yelling transphobia if told humans can’t fly or do all this other stuff, but they don’t.

That men can breastfeed (teenage girl)

In very rare cases they can, there’s been a lot of scientific research on it.

That social housing is free - as in we don't pay rent.
That you can rock up to the council and they'll house you, or at least " put your name down for a house"
That income tax payers are the only ones that contribute to government coffers - we all do via 20% VAT
