What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

Andy Warhol in A to B and Back Again said something about not eating honey because it was bee sick.

I was racking my brain to come up with something else, but it's definitely the gender identity stuff.
It's absolutely mindblowing that not only do so many grown people think that you're male or female on the basis of some kind of indefinable gender essence, but that they'll actually cheerlead putting gender non-conforming children onto off-label medication to try force their bodies into matching that internal essence.
There is no other woo that comes even close. Even the flat earth stuff seems relatively sane by comparison and that's well bonkers.

Yes. Gender ideology has genuinely shaken me not only because of its content but because it has demonstrated how shaky enlightenment values are in the West.

My husband had a teacher [admittedly many decades ago] who told them that people used to believe lots of unscientific superstitious nonsense, for example they thought the moon influenced the tides.

More recently my daughter did A-level biology with a girl who thought chickens fed baby chicks on milk. Because chicken breasts.
This young woman went on to become a primary school teacher.

How is it transphobic to state you can't change sex? It's a biological fact.

No it isn’t. There are animals that change sex. Doubtless one day biological science / genetic engineering will make it feasible in other animals. Take that how you will.

A workmate couldn't be convinced that meat came from real animals.

Omnipotent, benevolent being in a world where children get cancer.

This. It's actually mind boggling.

That he was ‘protecting’ his wife by having relationships with other women behind her back. That he was providing ‘therapy’ for the OW by having affairs with them. That he remained an honest and decent man and not at all a lying manipulator.

With a very large pinch of salt.

Our ndn believes that the Covid vaccine contains a chip that communicates with Satan, only those without the chip will be taken to Heaven when Jesus returns (very soon apparently). Earth will be turned into the new Hell and everyone left behind will be tortured and live for eternity as punishment for getting the vaccine.

I was referring to humans.

So soon we'll also be able to fly, or breathe underwater because some animals do, cool.

This is a mil one- She stopped eating tinned fish as she learned that the tins don't really contain fish, they contain wait for it........human flesh! the fact you see fish when you open the tin is all part of the clever disguise the powers in the spiritual realm use to fool you.

My late MIL was appalled that we left a wall socket switched on but no plug in it, the electricity would leak out apparentll.

My husband's aunt is a vegetarian but eats any and all fish because they don't have souls and it's the soul that matters when deciding what to eat.

Why do people believe the earth is flat? What is the benefit of this belief? How is believing it's a sphere holding the rest of us back? This makes no sense to me.

I'm not a flat earther but I find it a fascinating conspiracy theory and have watched several documentaries to try to gain some insight into this question.

There's a few reasons. For religious flat earthers, they basically believe that all science is fabricated as a way of steering people away from God and testing people's faith. Since science is what discovered the shape of earth, they believe it to be a lie.

Secondly they believe in a ruling elite, many subscribe to the illuminati conspiracy theory, and believe that all those in power are keeping knowledge to themselves and feeding us misinformation instead, so supposedly we can't trust literally anything we've been taught it schools. It's all gibberish to throw us off track and make us more malleable and easy to control.

They consider that because the earth looks flat (I disagree with this) that it stands to reason that it is flat, and that that's one of the biggest and most obvious lies we've taught, proving that we can't trust anything we've ever been taught.

I hope I explained that well enough. It's a very involved and complex theory that's hard to summarise concisely, and to non-flat earthers their reasons are still pretty cuckoo, but it gives you some idea.

Middle class, of course 🤣

I once watched 'The Truman Show' with a y10 class - preparation for some speaking & listening coursework.

One lad chirped up at the end that he thought it was pretty cool that Jim Carrey had gone on to have a career in Hollywood 'after he escaped'.

20 heads swivelled slowly & 20 of us basically said 'Danny...WTF?!'

Turned out Danny thought that he'd spent 3 lessons in English that week watching a documentary.

There was absolutely no convincing him differently. To the best of my knowledge, he believes it to this day.

(& yy to the possibility of changing sex...also wtf...)

OMG this is hilarious!
