What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:

A lovely young dentist friend of DD’s believes the royal family had Diana bumped off.

LoveLarry · 04/08/2022 11:42

I never understand the flat earthers

What difference does it
make to them. I don't get it

Athenajm80 · 04/08/2022 11:44

Similar to the other animal posts, a manager I had years ago thought reindeer were mythical creatures. When someone said they'd take her to see them (this was in the summer) she said "but wouldn't they be hibernating ready for the winter"

I6344 · 04/08/2022 11:44

That there is a God

Fladdermus · 04/08/2022 11:45

My mother voted for brexit partly because Angela Merkel, David Cameron and George Osbourne are all lizard people.

TheGreatATuin · 04/08/2022 11:45

I was racking my brain to come up with something else, but it's definitely the gender identity stuff.
It's absolutely mindblowing that not only do so many grown people think that you're male or female on the basis of some kind of indefinable gender essence, but that they'll actually cheerlead putting gender non-conforming children onto off-label medication to try force their bodies into matching that internal essence.
There is no other woo that comes even close. Even the flat earth stuff seems relatively sane by comparison and that's well bonkers.

That someone on MN genuinely said to put cheese in coffee as milk wasn't a necessity, during covid 🤯

Cattenberg · 04/08/2022 11:46

If I could choose anyone to be PM, it wouldn’t be Keir Starmer, but I’m amazed anyone still believes that Boris would make a better PM than Keir.

What? Ordinary cheese? Like you just dunk in a square of mature cheddar?
I can only assume they meant something like Philadelphia but that's weird enough 😂

FlosCampi · 04/08/2022 11:48

My friend's year 11 RE class thought the moon was the sun at night. When he argued that sometimes both are visible in the sky at once, they said "D'oh that's when it's eclipsing".

Going by current social media, a proportion of people in the UK think that a child can come back from the dead.

What?

CompleteGinasaur · 04/08/2022 11:49

Well, I was going to go with gender identity theology being the maddest thing ever, but now I've seen that one about cheese in coffee I'm going to have to change my vote!

If anyone thinks BoJo was a good PM I wouldn't be asking their advice on anything. He's a joke with zero integrity.

3peassuit · 04/08/2022 11:49

That my garden has flowers because the fairies visit and nothing to do with the money I spend at the garden centre or the hours I put in tending to it. Lovely woman but a bit on the batshit side.

Myownpapillon · 04/08/2022 11:49

That jam is made by fruit bees

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 04/08/2022 11:49

My DM was fascinated by a report on a British free diver who'd broken some record for it. The news reported that she went so deep her heart shrunk to the size of an orange. My DM was telling everyone about it and was absolutely convinced that the woman had shrunk to the size of an orange. She got really angry when I tried to correct her because she knew she was right.

Right bonkers!

Brigante9 · 04/08/2022 11:50

I have an ex friend who declared that she was going to be ‘more famous than Madonna’. Totally deluded.

MichonnesBBF · 04/08/2022 11:50

@TheGreatATuin They didn't explain any type of cheese or reasoning for that matter 🤣 it was during the stockpiling and curtain twitching times of covid

Mercurial123 · 04/08/2022 11:51

Bellenders · 04/08/2022 11:34

I’ve seen that on Facebook. Someone posted a photo where you can ‘definitely’ see Michelle’s ‘penis’. It’s absolutely not the wind/shape wear/clothes bunched up/any other explanation: it’s definitely a penis. They’d even circled it.

Some people are really stupid. She also thought CIA meant Catholics in Action....

CharlieAndTooManyCharacters · 04/08/2022 11:51

I feel that that many of my toddler’s beliefs are batshit. Some endearingly batshit. Some frustratingly so.

for example, he very clearly believes that throwing things is the best way to communicate his displeasure. And in no way does he agree with me on the value of using language to express his feelings.

Echobelly · 04/08/2022 11:51

No one I know but I actually came across someone on Twitter yesterday who believes 'most' British people think 'Boris Johnson saved us from Jeremy Corbyn'. I thought these people were made up by the Daily Mail, and no, he/she wasn't a 'bot'

My family sadly had to break with a very old and dear friend who had also looked after mine and my siblings' kids, and us when we were little, because she'd gone in for all this Rothschilds controlling the world etc conspiracies - and we're Jewish! It's sad because I think it's because she's mentally not very well and she can't properly see how hurtful and unacceptable these conspiracy theories are.

BruisedSkies · 04/08/2022 11:52

That Bill Gates caused the pandemic.

Lots of people believe it

LovinglifeAF · 04/08/2022 11:54

Agree on the sex change ones.

Mums4all · 04/08/2022 11:54

A teenage boy who did not believe that girls ‘did a number 2’ his words.
