What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:

What strikes me about the whole "I just wanted to read a light hearted thread" was that people wanted to mock the batshit beliefs of others and didn't appreciate their own beliefs being put on the same level. But for me they are.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2022 00:00

And no debate has definitely now run its course.

Exactly.

I bet if we had an actual person who really believed the queen was actually a lizard on this thread they'd be more than happy to explain exactly why they hold that belief. Why others are so coy is quite interesting. 🤔

You know if people had just allowed the posts stating that they thought the belief that humans can change sex was batshit to go without comment then there would have been absolutely no further discussion. The fact that people told us to shut up or called them transphobic is what has derailed the thread.

Perhaps the "no debate" tactic backfires?

I was just thinking if those who disagreed had just said why instead of refusing to engage or deflecting we'd probably have all moved on by now.

Still think its batshit that people think actual human beings can change their actual sex.

Do superstitions count for batshit points? I have a very superstitious relative, lovely person but quite a list of unlucky things that should be avoided at all costs.

Agree totally. But it’s actually really useful because there will be LOADS of lurkers out there reading some of these posts and seeing exactly what’s happened. DARVO.

It's actually one of the things that caught my eye in the days before I started to really think about everything involved that began to make me challenge my live and let live attitude.

MN was a GC flashpoint for me which I'll always be grateful for among other things. It opened my eyes quite a bit!

That white cat poo comes from a white cat.

You could imagine my face of confusion. I did tell them that wasn't quite right.

wandawhy · 05/08/2022 00:29

These loony ideas are worse when they refer to real people like Trump or George Soros. The Bilderberg Group used to publish the date and venue of their Annual Meetings.

That if you don't say 'I do believe in fairies' they die. And if you don't believe certain beliefs then adherents to that belief system also die or cease to exist simply due to your stated unbelief.

wandawhy · 05/08/2022 00:43

@MightbeMaybe
Thank you. Bed I think.

I'm glad you agree it's an important topic, would you be open to starting a thread?

Christian here whose son was diagnosed with cancer at 16 weeks old. Never has my faith been more a source of comfort and peace.

I'm glad it helps you. Genuinely — it must be very helpful for you to have something you feel comforted by.

I'm not expecting you to solve the problem of evil for me — the greatest minds of millennia haven't been able to find a satisfactory solution to it.

Mothership4two · 05/08/2022 02:15

In the US a few years ago and got talking to an American who was a creationist and did not believe in evolution - I was pretty gobsmacked at the time

bagpuss90 · 05/08/2022 07:24

My ex thought that a stroke was another name for a heart attack, antibiotics don’t work in the day, only at night. Oh and plasters can make your fingers drop off if you leave them on too long

It's the fucking shoehorning into everything, and the way the anti-trans proponents seem unable to think or care about anything else.

It's the way every single thread the subject could possibly apply to gets railroaded onto this single subject. Some of us actually want to enjoy the website, and this thread was so obviously meant to be light-hearted.

And fwiw, I don't think people can change sex; the behaviour of some of the TRAs is disturbing; and I share concerns about men (which is what they are) in women's sport, some single-sex spaces etc. But I don't think it's the only fucking thing happening in the world that matters.

Look, this is a thread about batshit beliefs. Some people have said ‘ people can change sex’.

They were not arguing with anyone, or inviting a discussion. They just stated their view.
Other people have come along to insult them and tell them to bore off. That is what has detailed the thread.

You could just leave people to have their say in their post and move into the next post.
But if you come along to scold people for the stating their experience on a thread explicitly inviting people to state their experience, then yeah, that scolding will lead to a derailing.

I'm sorry, I don't agree. Scolding your opponent's view - sincerely held by many (I'd agree wrongly) - as 'batshit' is confrontational. it toxifies and polarises a debate that is already really fraught.

And the only insults dished out on this thread are by 'your' side of the equation. Go on, have a read.

Regarding the 'problem of evil', it's a bit more complicated than that. The onus is to show that the problem exists - it's an argument against the existence of a god, not for - and this has never been conclusively achieved. Which is why philosophers are still talking about it.

cakewitch · 05/08/2022 07:51

That the war in Ukraine is fake. Its a movie set.

Supersee · 05/08/2022 08:21

Well that's not true is it, when you stated 'sharp as a tack you eh' which then got deleted.

In the same post you put the 'anti trans' followed by 'fwiw I don't think men can change sex' or thereabouts. So by your own reasoning, you are anti trans as that's all anyone has said.

You appear to be tripping yourself up.

That if you say 'Thank you' when somebody blesses you when you sneeze, a fairy will die. Of course this is bat sh*t. Otherwise all the fairies in my garden would be dead by now and they are all still alive playing in the hedgerow whenever I am not around. 😉

Of course you do know that if you say thank you, you can prevent a fairy dying by spinning round three times? I've saved many a fairy by doing that!😂

Clovacloud · 05/08/2022 08:33

MIL believed that there could be eclipses where the sun came between the earth and the moon. She swore she’d even seen one.

In hindsight we should have realised it was a sign of early dementia. We just thought she was batshit.

morningtoncrescent62 · 05/08/2022 08:35

Birds aren't real. Actual living birds were killed by the US government in the middle of the 20th century, and those flappy things you see in the sky are drones, operated by said government to keep us all under surveillance. (Quite why the US government wants to thieve people's fish and chips in Whitby I don't know but I'm sure there's an explanation somewhere.)
