Hi I had surgery on my stomach 3 weeks ago tomorrow all was going well until about 5 days ago when I had a red rash go across my stomach quickly following my yellow/orange/pink sometimes with red leaking

took hours to even speak to a gp and then they gave me two different types of antibiotics which I started on Monday .

i don’t know if it’s infection only or a infected pool of fluid under the skin. The leaking has increased.

no fever, some deep stomach pain on and off , no smell, Shouldn’t it stop leaking now the antibiotics are in my system ?

OP posts:

How are you OP?

custardbear · 04/08/2022 10:30

Wow that's pretty nasty, I'm glad you went to ER

MyneighbourisTotoro · 04/08/2022 10:47

Glad you are in A&E OP and I hope you have been seen by now.

My husband had an operation, he came home and wasn’t right at all, he felt very poorly and assumed he was still coming around from it all but he passed out on top of me, I managed to get him back to bed as this happened later in the day.
We ended up rushing him back to hospital as an immense amount of fluid started to flow out of his wound, he needed IV antibiotics and stayed in hospital until he was all clear to come home.

I hope you are being looked after so you can recover properly!

Personally I'd have rung 111. They'll look at the photo too. OP said she felt OK and had no immediate signs of sepsis. Unless it's a dire emergency that requires 999 I always call 111 first not mumsnet!!! I send people to hospital with sepsis most days from my clinic and know what to look for as it's part of my job. Seriously let the professionals decide if you need to go in not the Internet. There is huge pressure on a@e right now. MIU is another alternative, very little in the way of queues and will give you antibiotics.

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

I had something similar looking and would have died from sepsis if I hadn’t been taken to A & E (on the advice of family) as 111 told me it wasn’t serious!

I am aware of how busy A & E is as we all are, but to leave her wound in such a state isn’t on. Where was she supposed to go in the middle of the night?

Wheresthebeach · 04/08/2022 11:10

I really wonder about the value of these threads. People should phone 111 for proper advice. I realise that sometimes they help, but there have to be times where they do more harm than good.

This. Posters like this on mn should be instantly banned. I got called pathetic and a drama queen on here one night for asking for opinions on whether I should go to a and e. I had no serious or major symptoms, wasn’t in major pain, but I just knew something had gone wrong and I felt a horrible sense of doom. I felt like I was going to die. It was the next afternoon when my oh put his foot down and demanded I go to a and e. Turned out I had a massive ovarian cyst which had ruptured, I found out I was pregnant at the same time. I had to have surgery and spent a week in hospital with a drain in my abdomen sucking all the blood out from the internal bleeding. Me and my baby would have died if I’d have listened to the dickheads on here.

‘ dickheads on here’ wouldn’t answer if people didn’t ask such stupid questions. Why ask these dickheads ( your opinion) for advice in the first place??

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/08/2022 11:28

I’m so glad you’re at A&E and hopefully being given IV antibiotics. My hysterectomy scar never looked like that.

Shtfday · 04/08/2022 11:32

The fact that she has a canula in while waiting - shows that the nurse knows she will need IV antibiotics. the fact she is still waiting doesn't mean its not serious it means the NHS is on its knees and people are waiting unacceptable times for treatment.

Hope you are getting treatment now OP

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/08/2022 11:34

Shtfday
Terrible but true statement.

SquirrelSoShiny · 04/08/2022 11:50

I hope you're being treated and treated well OP x

Because 111 regularly gets it wrong.

Because sometimes people need a bit of extra moral support, especially when they’re unwell and not able to think so clearly.

SpencersCroftCat · 04/08/2022 12:56

I'm still experiencing post surgery issues after three months, in the early days I had drains in which had a similar colour to what you describe. If there's been any liposuction in particular, then I'd be expecting the same kind of liquid. I've also got erupting stitches. I hope you're ok.

Hollyhead · 04/08/2022 13:03

Glad you got seen op. It does make you wonder about NHS aftercare though - surely it would make better sense for post op patients to be able to call back to where they had their operation for 2-3 weeks post op if they have a problem rather than starting again in the A&E queue. Not that you did the wrong thing OP, I think the process is wrong.

This

thr most bafling are those OPs they start threads about their children and their health!

seriously - starting a thread to gauge the views of a group of anonymous posters on a completely non-medical website

odd

JelloFishy · 04/08/2022 13:13

Glad you went to a and e! How are feeling this afternoon? Hope you are feeling better and got some strong antibiotics!

bringonthesunshinefinally · 04/08/2022 13:17

savethatkitty · 04/08/2022 08:08

It looks grim, yes. Is it life threatening. No. Stay home & visit a clinic or GP as soon as you can.

In reality , non life threatening issues become life threatening because there are often NO appointments at GP surgeries . By the time she gets seen by a GP she could be very ill. OP has done the right thing to attend hospital.

Rockschooldropout · 04/08/2022 13:57

OP I hope you went to a and e , I’m an ex surgical nurse and it looks like a staph a infection , sonetimes it needs vancomycin to clear but penicillins are the usual course of treatment

Rockschooldropout · 04/08/2022 14:01

Ahh just saw the update , hopefully you have been seen by now !

You must be a super nurse if you can name the pathogen just by looking!

My spider senses are suggesting that OP may have had her TT abroad and that’s why she’s not been able to get any practical help from her own surgical team.

All the UK plastic surgeons I know of would have had her back in for bloods/swabs/antibiotics/imaging like a shot, in order to check for an abdominal collection and decide whether she needed to go back to theatre.

momtoboys · 04/08/2022 14:40

Hope all is ok.

oakleaffy · 04/08/2022 15:41

Truly, @Brighton5555 that does not look good.
Can you not go back to the person who did it?..Or would you rather not?

I've seen far better work done by Vets.
That looks infected to my untutored eyes and needs attention.

oakleaffy · 04/08/2022 15:52

Brighton5555 · 04/08/2022 04:36

I’ve been here 5 hours now . Haven’t seen a doctor . There is one doctor working and one nurse taking bloods which I’ve had done and a swab. If I hadn’t had those I would have left.
my incisions hurt beyond believe and they have put a cannula in my arm.

I’ve asked how many in front and been told 3. I think by 7am I will be seen.

Hope you are feeling better soon.
That looks so painful. :(

You say the surgeons you know, could you please recommend? Looking at having TT in the UK in the next 6 months. TIA
