Not often i'm speechless.

How is this buried within the news?! Should this not be headline?

It's beyond disturbing.

Those poor children

I too remember the Satanic panic. This is a dreadful tale of abuse, I hope the victims receive justice and all the help they need.

Hopeandlove · 03/08/2022 16:56

I think we wait and see on this one. Sometimes things go quiet because a huge case against multiple people is being built and they don’t want to find that it a waste of time because something was incorrectly reported in the media etc

Mrsjayy · 03/08/2022 16:57

2bazookas · 03/08/2022 16:50

30 years ago there was a "satanic child abuse" accusation in Scotland which turned out to be completely false. But not before nine children were forcibly removed and allowed no parental contact.

Maybe people who remember the trauma those families suffered, are a bit more cautious before joining a witch hunt.

I remember this.

I've just been googiling and the op is in all the news papers from 2 days ago I dont know why you think it was covered up.

No-one will want another satanic panic/witch-hunt. People's imaginations get fired up and then innocent people get hurt. I know we'd all like to think we're rational people, but mass hysteria has a strange effect.

I agree with this. Look where it got us last time. I remember the Satanic Panic and I imagine reporting will be cautious.

SerendipityJane · 03/08/2022 17:30

I've just been googling and the op is in all the news papers from 2 days ago I don't know why you think it was covered up.

All part of the modern "how to wrangle the media" courses that people are going on everywhere. Generally this centres around incredibly privileged people getting eye-watering amounts of headlines in which they claim they are being "silenced" by an amorphous conspiracy. Laurence Fox springs to mind. The reason is now if you google "Glasgow" and "satanic cover up" you will actually get some hits. Making it look like Google agrees with you.

Redannie118 · 03/08/2022 17:37

The Satanist church is a humaitarian organisation. Three of their commandments are-

1Do not approach someone for sex unless they make it clear they want too

2 Do not harm small children

3 Do not harm animals.

The highest law of Wicca/witchcraft is " First harm none"

As a practicing Wiccan myself it makes my blood boil when stories like this come out. No one has ever said during the many thousand of
sex trials against the Catholic church that the only reason they commited these horrific crimes was their religion. Why are people utterly horrified that Satanism and Wicca are " allowed "to exist when the Catholic church has been systematically raping and murdering for thousands of years?

These crimes were commited by vile, evil people who had a Satanic kink and used it to scare and coerce vulnerable children. I hope the law sends them down for life. These monsters have nothing to do with Satanism or witchcraft and infact defile our laws and beliefs.

Remember, mankind is perfectly capable of commiting acts of evil without help from anyone, least of all Satan.

knittingaddict · 03/08/2022 17:44

If I was a betting woman I would say that this will be "simply" vile child abuse and the witchcraft stuff will be either not true or window dressing. It's probably why the BBC put " " around witchcraft.

After the Satanic Panic and the whole Nick debarcle the police and media will hopefully be more careful about what they claim and report.

The SNP are trying to hush this up because it doesn't reflect well on Scotland. Scotland has a terrible history with witchcraft (the British story of witches being persecuted is above all a Scottish one, though one wouldn't think it because the SNP do a good job of hushing it up), the last one being executed as recently as 1727, long after other countries ceased the hunt.

It is shocking to hear that witchcraft is still practiced north of the border and I'm not suprised - though disappointed - that Sturgeon & co. don't want this getting out.

Why is it shocking that ‘witchcraft’ is practiced in Scotland? Not that all ‘witches’ are Wiccan, but there are around 11,000 wiccans in England, and it probably has a presence in most countries in Europe at least.

Not that many participate in crimes like the one reported, of course.

Kazziek · 03/08/2022 17:51

What Redannie said. Witchcraft, Wicca and Sataniam have nothing to do with child abuse.

Stylishkidintheriot · 03/08/2022 17:55

I thought Satanism was nothing to do with abusing people (or animals)....

I don’t believe the whole “Satanism” thing. But the child abuse, unfortunately, I do believe this happens

I know mumsnet doesn't like NS but this is beyond ridiculous.

Isn't it just? I think "as recently as 1727" is one of the most bizarre things I've ever read on here. Apart from rocks who the fuck would 300 years ago as recently?

I'm also wondering why they would be shocked that witchcraft would still be being practiced north of the border. I mean 1) what does @crwnhgow think witchcraft is exactly and 2) do they realise that wicca aka modern witchcraft was founded in the 60s South of the border?

The SNP are hushing up something from the 1700s? What about previous governments? I must have missed their public service announcements.

I first saw about about 5 pages down on an online newspaper - and it was one of the only articles that was closed to comments.

I guess that's what I mean. Yes, it's in the papers, but very very low down.

I didn't know about the other time - off to research that now. I can see though if it's happened before (or similar) that the media will be cautious.

Would be awful to be on the jury for this though.

I'm surprised some posters are adamant it must have been made up by the children though. Really? I can't get my 8 yr old to lie to the doctor that he's wearing his bloody insoles!

I don’t think anyone is adamant that it’s ‘made up’, just that it’s probably not some great satanic conspiracy. If it occurred it’s down to an abuse ring (sadly not uncommon), not the devil.

There’s a long history of Satanic Panic and the damage such hysteria causes, and it would be irresponsible of the media to whip one up in the present time. People don’t need to be worked into a fury that would undoubtedly be unleashed on anyone practicing alternative spirituality, anyone obviously belonging to an alt subculture, or just anyone that seems ‘weird’.

A child was shut in a microwave and they sacrificed a budgie bizarre.

I can't see how a child would fit in a microwave.

whumpthereitis · 03/08/2022 20:41

And children have been, and can be, manipulated into giving untrue statements by investigators who have already decided what they want the outcome to be.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satanic_panic

wikipedia link, but provides plenty of examples.

Eunorition · 03/08/2022 20:45

Lwren · 03/08/2022 16:53

One of the worst things the media do when it comes to children is use words like sex or say "breasts" when talking about a child, who don't have breasts or can have sex, it makes the victims sound older or consensual. Knocks me sick.

Many years ago I did a course and I was asked, "would you believe me if I told you winnie the poo or Donald duck raped me when I was a child?" I was a child myself and it really threw me, I was wondering wtf kind of person says that. They the man explained to a child being raped by family members, if they're wearing a mask of winnie etc, and believe that's who's raping them, who is going to believe a child or children saying such things?
Maybe this is a similar situation?

I read the same account in at least three different books - true crime exploration stuff and one personal journey thing, then I think it's been used in fiction as well - but it's another thing that then crops up over and over again, but always in second hand accounts, discredited Satanic Panic people who did the whole 'repressed memory' thing, and people discussing the very issue. It's become an urban legend at this point.

I can't see how a child would fit in a microwave.

Owens, Lannery, Williams, Brannan and Clark are also accused of the attempted murder of the younger of the two girls starting when she was just weeks old, between December 2015 and June 2019.

Both of my two when weeks old would have fitted in a microwave.

The language used throughout the entire BBC article is very odd...:

Prosecutors state all 11 are said to have got the boy and the older girl to take part in "seances (and) use a Ouija board...to call on spirits and demons".

They also allegedly got the children involved in "witchcraft", leading them to believe that they themselves had "metamorphosed into animals".

The 11 are further said to have worn cloaks and devil horns as well making the young boy stab a budgie to death.

The group are also accused of killing a number of dogs, including getting the children to attack the animals.

"Got the boy", "got the children", "making the boy", "getting the children".

It's the oddest language I've ever come across in a supposedly reputable source.

Very fishy...

Each time child abuse is discussed, it is insinuated that abusers in rings dont get caught or prosecuted or the children are not believed because the rings are made up of men of Muslim/asian groups and the police or social workers ignore the children because of that. Which doesnt make sense because the examples given are of rings that were prosecuted.

And that the media doesnt report it or its hidden away because of a fear of looking racist

Despite that child sex abusers are made up from all manner of communities in the UK.

I think the question here was why it took so long to break these rings and arrest people. I'm not sure why this comment even belongs on this thread tbf. Or I'm completely misunderstanding your comment.

BrendaHope · 03/08/2022 21:30

The media can't go into much detail at the moment because people have been charged, they can't risk prejudicing the up and coming trial. Once the trial takes place, they can then report on what is said during the trial.

N00tN00t · 03/08/2022 22:12

How awful for those poor children. Its weird to see this today. I ended up down a bit of a rabbit hole yesterday after reading something about Isaac Kappy. The actor who died/killed himself after outting some people in Hollywood. I some things that were definitely just way out there conspiracy theories. However, 'contact zero' and '5th world assemblage' freaked me out a bit. A lot of it was about this sort of thing and Scotland.

I hope the children get proper justice.

This is also the reason the article will be closed for comments. It falls under the contempt of court act.

Just beware when interpreting a child's words. Did the children report that the master of ceremonies wore a funny robe like a dress and an evil looking square hat? Did they say he wanted them to believe they were all sheep and called all the adults forward to kneel and drink blood and eat flesh? Are they scared to go to kirk again?
