One of the things it means to me is recognising that trans women are actual women and that they should be treated as such and supported by all women.

babyjellyfish · 03/08/2022 15:11

To me it means fighting for the rights of female people. It's an equality movement, but also a levelling up movement, in the context of historical and ongoing oppression of female people on the basis of their sex.

I say female people because I think it includes female people who identify as trans men or non binary, but not male people who identify as trans women. That doesn't mean you can't support rights for trans women, but for me, where there is a conflict between trans women and female people, feminism means you put the female people first.

And where there is a conflict of rights, whose are more important?

xogossipgirlxo · 03/08/2022 15:13

Well, I think I am feminist, but many people would probably say I'm not 😏

RainbowsMoonbeams · 03/08/2022 15:13

To me it means supporting the rights of biological women, end of. I don’t care if that’s not PC.

BlueKaftan · 03/08/2022 15:15

For me it means having equal rights to men. And trans women are NOT women.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 03/08/2022 15:18

Supporting the rights of anyone with XX chromosones regardless of how they present or identify.

Ponderingwindow · 03/08/2022 15:18

feminism means recognizing that women have a valuable intellectual and creative contribution to make to society. The fact that our society was built without recognizing that half of the species needs to deal with menstruation, gestation, and lactation while making that contribution is a problem that needs to be solved.

Cattenberg · 03/08/2022 15:19

I’d like to repeat this quote by Susan B. Anthony as it sums up my views pretty well.

Men their rights and nothing more;
women their rights and nothing less

Equality. End of.

AKnitterofThings · 03/08/2022 15:21

I believe the rights of biological women and girls to have equal rights to men, to have the same chances in education, health and employment and to have the right to be SAHMs if that is their choice. I also believe in our right to protected single sex spaces, hospital wards, toilets, changing rooms, prisons etc.

PuttingDownRoots · 03/08/2022 15:21

For me it means striving for equality for everyone while acknowledging their differences. And overcoming societal expectations of gender.

Yes, plus various other issues due to our biological differences from 'default humans' ie males.

minipie · 03/08/2022 15:23

To me there are two necessary components of feminism:

  1. belief that women and men should have equal rights and equal treatment (this doesn’t always mean exactly the same, women may need different things to help them be equal due to biology eg maternity rights, safe spaces)

  2. belief that there is still a long way to go before we have equality and so there are still changes to strive for

I have known quite a few women who believe 1) but not 2), they think it’s all done already…

Equality. End of.

Exactly this!

Unfortunately, this is no longer what feminism is about so no, I'm not a feminist in the modern sense.

SpiderVersed · 03/08/2022 15:25

To me it means fighting to change society until women and their rights are truly on a par with men - in work, at home, in society, in healthcare, in all aspects.

I think CCP’s Invisible Women was great at highlighting some of the many ways society ignores female people.

It also means standing with our sisters who are suffering because of their sex, like in Afghanistan. Feminism is about supporting all female people, even ones we disagree with. I included transmen and non-binary female people in my feminism because it is a movement for our sex, not gender.

Yes, this.

MajorCarolDanvers · 03/08/2022 15:27

For me

Its not having your choices and options in life limited by what kind of genitals you have.

Its make sure you bring your kids up as feminists too.

Its supporting and encouraging younger women colleagues in their careers.

Soubriquet · 03/08/2022 15:28

I’m a feminist. To me it means women have equal rights to men and not being lower on the totem pole

KimWexlersPonyTail · 03/08/2022 15:29

@FangsForTheMemory if Transwomen are 'actual women' as you stated, why are they called trans? Can I be a transwomen? If not why not?

BeyondPurpleTulips · 03/08/2022 15:30

Old school definition of liberation of the female sex, by addressing the root of the problem.

babyjellyfish · 03/08/2022 15:36

Personally I don't see how the belief that trans women are women, trans men are men and non binary people are neither men nor women is compatible with being a feminist.

The whole concept of gender identity depends on defining men and women as genders, rather than biological sex categories. For me as a feminist, that is really problematic. I have yet to see a definition of gender which isn't based in the very regressive stereotypes feminists are supposed to be fighting against. I don't see how it is possible to accept the legitimacy of gender at the same time as being a feminist.

FOJN · 03/08/2022 15:38

Like PP I believe in female liberation. I agree with Germaine Greer that equality is a profoundly conservative aim. I don't believe that patriarchy serves many men particularly well so it would be counter productive for me to think equality within a patriarchal system was desirable.
