Wtf. I know that he hates it but he's got nothing to go to.
We stupidly have no savings as we've just moved house.
I'm sure he'll find something but he just announced it over coffee. Arghh!

OP posts:
3luckystars · 01/08/2022 13:19

No they used all their savings for the deposit and furnishing the house etc.

Lochnessgiraffe · 01/08/2022 13:19

Yes private school. Not a drip feed but not relevant

OP posts:
3luckystars · 01/08/2022 13:19

most people are broke just after buying a house!

3luckystars · 01/08/2022 13:20

I was wrong then. Sorry about that.

what will you do now, will they have to move school?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 01/08/2022 13:23

How much do you earn?

Lochnessgiraffe · 01/08/2022 13:24

No luckily one is off to local college and the others fees have been paid last month.

anotherbrewplease · 01/08/2022 13:27

I’d say the private school part absolutely is relevant- as it costs £££

He's currently updating LinkedIn and looking for jobs. So feeling a bit better. He's going to look at contract as well as perm. So fingers crossed.
I have just spoken to him and his probation was going to be extended that's why he did it now.

Well that's the reason why he's quit rather than be pushed.

I've known people quit high paying jobs after a similar time, often they're not meeting targets, performing as well, or they over stated how well they worked in a previous role (experience).

One job where I used to work, we hired a Partner in conveyancing. Glowing references, experienced but he messed up a few transactions badly, lied about it and we then got another solicitor (at associate level) to look into it, this was 5-6 months down the line. Then we fired him for under performing.

RJnomore1 · 01/08/2022 13:31

You’ve done really well being able to move two months ago when you were both in new posts for about 4 months and he was still on probation in his. If you could manage that you’ll be fine with anything. Must be a shock though.

Shgytfgtf111 · 01/08/2022 13:32

Some of the responses on this thread are very strange. I think the Op just wanted to blow off some steam about the fact that her hubby has quit his job without consulting her and suddenly its become all about - he must have been sacked/the notice period is a lie/why dont you have any savings and other things that arent relevant. The Op just wanted to vent as she needs to be supportive to him and cant vent directly to him.

Beachbreak2411 · 01/08/2022 13:32

Think I’ve got a tiny violin somewhere. Earned that much and no savings. Left with nowhere to go to after 6 months. I wouldn’t leave my minimum wage job with nowhere to go to. He’s jumped before he was pushed.

It isn't standard anywhere that I know of. Because those who can command £100k a year would never accept a job with only 1 weeks notice at any point in time. I am not on £100k but I do have a very good income; and "starting notice" is 2 months in my line of work, rising to 4 months after probation. There is no way on God's earth that I, or anyone I know, would accept a job that only had a 1 week notice period.

I can only talk from my industry but it’s very common. I’m an IT contractor earning over 100k on a 7 day notice period if either I want to quit or they want to stand me down. I left a well known telco last year as the project (and wider leadership) I was working on was an absolute car crash and was really affecting my mental health. I left without a new job lined up but had a new contract within 3 weeks. The contractor market is still absolutely booming so I’d have no concerns about finding another contract if needed too.

OP totally agree you should have been part of your DH’s decision but if he’s in same industry as me and contracting he’ll pick something up soon no problem

Why is it relevant?

OP hasn’t asked for budgeting advice.

@Chocolatelabradorsarethebest “too much time on Mumsnet “ ! says the person who is highlighting the OP’s previous post 😂

Yep
Totally agree
Finding it hard to have sympathy for this plight when many woman in the uk can barely afford food and basic sanitary products

It is relevant though, as you need to be able to pay for that too so that's potentially more upheaval for the family. Anyway, contracting is a good way to go, good luck.

Mindthegob · 01/08/2022 13:42

Nooooooo.

Because they have lots of commitments and no savings. It's relevant to how fucked they are going to be if he doesn't pick up another well paying job quickly.

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 01/08/2022 13:45

What sector is he in? Some are booming

neshtastic · 01/08/2022 13:49

WhackingPhoenix · 01/08/2022 13:15

How on earth do you have no savings when he has been earning at least £5k per month after tax? What the hell is it going on?!

We clear about £8000 a month and still don't have enough to put away every month.Blush

SleeplessInEngland · 01/08/2022 13:51

This thread feels like a very tedious drip feed so all I'll say is that if he was considered worthy of being paid 100k by someone then he'll probably find another well-paying job easily enough.

He's been there 6 months and it wasn't the right fit. I knew he wanted to quit but thought he'd find somewhere else first.

I reckon he hasn't passed his probation.
