Neighbour hates our hot tub

We only bought our hot tub yesterday and set it up, kids been in it this morning from 8:45. Neighbour was round within 30 minutes she thinks it’s an absolute joke it’s too noisy she can barely hear herself think apparently. She is so much younger than us but miserable as hell!

she is quite nosey and is always on the street when any drama is going on with any of the neighbours so I kind of expected it.

of course I wouldn’t put the bubbles on at night (as much as I’d like to) so have told the kids only in the day.

we will probably only use it a few times a week.

Aibu what do I do?

If your hot tub when its on is noisy and audible in her property then it could constitute a Statutory Noise Nuisance and action could be taken against you by the local authority. I am an ex EHO so know this as fact - not the sort of myths you will read on here about "oh you can do what you want in your own home she can just do one" You cant "oh well as long as its before 11pm you can make as much noise as you want" WRONG a noise can be a statutory noise nuisance any time of the day or night. You need to look at insulation to reduce the noise levels. there is lots of information out there on the internet about this because it is a huge problem in residential areas. And to all of the posters who "love a hot tub on holiday" you do realise that it needs testing twice a day in a commercial./ furnished holiday let setting. so if you stay somewhere and its not being tested twice a day, or its one of those plug and play ones then its not compliant with the law and you risk all sorts of very nasty skin diseases.

I’ve been waiting for a hot tub thread to nestle in this complaint about my neighbours.
Our gardens are tiny and you can see and hear into every one on our side (around 8 gardens) they are also overlooked by a row of terraces over a road to the back.
Over Easter the next door neighbours hired a hot tub for a weekend. Had a loud party in it on the first night. Fine that’s a one off I just closed our windows.
On the second night they had a bit of adult fun in it. Loudly. She was moaning and groaning and shouting out. Our houses are only around 10ft apart. Their hot tub was against our fence. I felt like they wanted to be caught as they knew our garden doors were kept open in an evening for the cat until quite late. It felt voyeur-istic so I shouted the cat in as loud as I could but they didn’t stop, only got louder. I closed the doors pretty quickly.
The next day I heard the male neighbour in there with their young child from around 8am.
I have never been as happy to see a hire company collect something as I was that hot tub.
Now I live in fear of them ever hiring another.
Anyone with a hot tub is BU in my opinion if they have neighbours.

When I lived in a terraced house my children weren’t allowed in the garden before 10 at the weekend. Maybe restrict the hours you allow your children to play in the tub. Loud child noises plus hot tub sound would probably be a bit irritating if it went on from early morning till children's bed time.

Shinyandnew1 · 01/08/2022 12:57

I think the difference between paddling pools and hot tubs is that hot tubs are generally more pleasantly warm to be in, so people stay in them for longer. They make their own noise as well so people talk louder over them to be heard, making them pretty annoying for neighbours.

Silvercatowner · 01/08/2022 13:06

My neighbour's hot tub isn't noisy (thank goodness) but when they are in it my garden stinks of chlorine. I want my garden to smell of plants and earth, not the chemicals that have been added to make the water safe,

LakieLady · 01/08/2022 13:07

My SIL has one. I was really surprised by how loud the humming is, you can hear it clearly inside the (huge) house, even with the doors and windows shut. When they had a family party a few weeks ago, they had it bubbling and the racket was astonishing, even before the kids started screaming in it.

But what got me the most was the awful chlorine smell. It smelt the worst municipal swimming pool.

theremustonlybeone · 01/08/2022 13:07

First of all your hot tub wouldn,t be ready at 0845am if you only got it yesterday
Second letting your kids in it at 0845 and switching on the bubbles is taking the piss- it is very very noisy and we only ever switch ours on if using it in the afternoon and only for a minute as its very very loud.

Ii have a few gardens that are joined to mine and we as neighbours are respectful to each other.

I think that was too early and environmentally they’re shit, but there’s nothing she can actually do as long as you’re not totally taking the piss.

Tuilpmouse · 01/08/2022 13:13

8:45 isn't too early.... 6:45 and you'd have a point.

Lots of grumpy people in this thread who think children should be seen and not heard!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/08/2022 13:17

Your neighbours would hate us. We have a 12ft pool with a filter. It doesn't make a loud noise though.

Are neigh are ace though and their kids use the pool too

So inconsiderate and selfish. Awful. If I was your neighbour I would move house. You have made their lives a misery within one day. Unbearable.

Not inconsiderate or selfish in the slightest. If I had a neighbour like you'd I'd be so over the moon you'd move

woodhill · 01/08/2022 13:24

0845 at the weekend is a bit much and it is good to be considerate of your neighbours.

What if your neighbours wanted to sleep in the afternoon? I reckon at least as many people are asleep at 3pm as they are at 8:45am. Stop being sanctimonious.

woodhill · 01/08/2022 13:28

I thought it occurred yesterday (Sunday)

woodhill · 01/08/2022 13:29

Yes I see 😀

theremustonlybeone · 01/08/2022 13:33

Tuilpmouse its not sanctimonious to be a considerate neighbour.

Chucking your DC in a hot tub (that wouldn't be ready anyway as it takes at least 24hrs for the chemicals to settle and you need to do a lot of work to maintain it). at 0845 and switching on the bubbles and leaving it on is a shit thing to do no matter if it is 0845 or the afternoon.

Bagpuss2022 · 01/08/2022 13:37

Where are all these hot tubs that “hum” my next door neighbour has a proper fixed one don’t hear it we have a blow up one it doesn’t hum when just the heat and filters on only makes a noise when bubbles on we don’t have them on as I don’t like getting my hair wet!

no different to having a paddling pool I will be getting in mine later with a book and a nice cold glass of wine

Figgygal · 01/08/2022 13:41

Im with your neighbour
Theyre ghastly things
And to let your kids in it pre 9am on a Sunday is even worse

It's brilliant how thick people make themselves seem on here

LunchPoems · 01/08/2022 13:59

I don’t understand why you went ahead and got something that you knew would upset your neighbour and are now asking about it.

It’s clear that you feel perfectly entitled to have this thing regardless, so there’s no point asking people what they think.

I live in fear of my neighbours getting one!
