It's got zero to do with football or sport, please sing something else. John Barnes rap is preferable, really.

I thought at the last mens World Cup it came out that this song was a bit of a thing privately for the players and so it was cottoned on to by the fans and it’s gone from there.

xalo · 01/08/2022 07:58

Think of the royalties!Confused

Oblomov22 · 01/08/2022 08:00

I love it.
Isn't their team song an Abba song though. They should play that aswell.

sunglassesonthetable · 01/08/2022 08:01

Love the song ! My sister is Caroline and my dear dad loved the song.

Sing away Lionesses! Enjoy!

I'm sure it started at the cricket in 20:20 matches

I associate it with cricket rather than football

WendellGeez · 01/08/2022 08:06

I always thought he was singing "Touch my behind".

paradyning · 01/08/2022 08:08

I agree I associate it with cricket and it irritates me it now with the football.

20 years in Glasgow and I never knew about the Rangers association. That totally explains Rod Stewart now, thanks pp.

Life long Gers fan here and we def don't sing sweet Caroline at ANY games. Simply the best and penny arcade are our songs if your talking about 'pop' songs. Please don't associate rod stewart with rangers fans Smile

@Quincythequince It's not miserable, I can't stand the bloody song and then it becomes an earworm. We Are The Champions seems much more appropriate. But of course there'll be folks who don't like that too.

I always thought the lyrics were “I’m feeling kind” rather than “I feel inclined”

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 01/08/2022 08:39

Quincythequince · 01/08/2022 06:56

‘I’m forever blowing bubbles’

‘You’ll never walk alone’

’Hey Jude’

’Right here, right now’

’Z cars’

The list goes on. Go educate yourself on football music culture a bit (there is one…)

Oh yes that old 🌰 "educate yourself". Don't you mean do a bit of fact finding, not enrol on a course? 😹

I was just thinking this.

”Sweeet Caroline- ba ba baaaa baaaaa”. Are we sheep? 😵‍💫

I thought it was a cricket song. But it's a nice tune and people can sing what they like

Fact finding is educational.

You clearly know nothing about football chants, or their roots, yet you posted anyway. Not liking the song is neither here nor there, is the general ‘what’s the point of this song’ that is plain ignorant.

And That’s fair enough- but you can expect to be picked up on it if you post something like ‘it’s nothing to do with football’

What has ‘blowing bubbles’ in the true sense have to do with West Ham? Or maybe it’s one or two of the lines that resonate. Or maybe a long time ago someone used to play a song for personal reasons etc. Just because you don’t understand it, it doesn’t mean there is no meaning.

People here are obviously unaware that Manchester City fans sing Blue Moon, West Ham United fans sing I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles (not Michael Jackson's bedtime song, by the way), that Crystal Palace fans sing Glad All Over on the rare occasions that they score, etc. "Football" songs rarely have anything to do with football.

The fact that fans of Newcastle United Football Club sing a song about travelling to a horse-race meeting will cause your brains to shut down completely.

How VERY dare you?! Wink We sing Glad All Over when the team take to the pitch. And yes, should we ever score. Blackpool also use Glad All Over as entrance music. Other teams use a new song each season which creates more of a moment in time approach. And let's not discuss Chelsea fans' love of celery Envy (not envy)

People make associations between songs and teams, sports and times. I think of Rugby League when I hear Sweet Caroline. It was an, ahem, embellished version. If you don't like so good x3, you are unlikely to enjoy that one.

Jerusalem = cricket to me. Sounds odd at the rugby to me, but I'm sure others will disagree.

Don't Take Me Home which is now EVERYWHERE for me will forever be Wales' Euro 2016 song. Now England football, cricket fans have taken it

The song that’s appropriate is the one that they want and seem to enjoy!

And 87k other people seemed to be having a pretty good time too.

Mindthegob · 01/08/2022 08:57

The Americans regularly send out Memos to the biggest stars to write songs about teams/winning/champions etc so they have something recent for fans to get behind. It’s actually a good idea!

Louise0701 · 01/08/2022 08:57

I associate it with boxing too but love hearing it at matches.

Someone said it was played at a funeral?! Wtf. Cannot think of a less appropriate song for a funeral. Makes me think of huge crowds in good spirits cheering people on. Love it.

Mindthegob · 01/08/2022 09:01

To be fair it’s the baaa ing I have a problem with, not Caroline

Daydream believer with alternative lyrics was sung at Derby

Ahem

Sunderland even got it into the charts (number 41 I believe) - yes I bought it on cassette tape.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 01/08/2022 09:08

I did appreciate this version at the time 😆

Davros · 01/08/2022 09:12

Anyone remember the Chelsea song "celery"? They used to chuck celery into the pitch and got banned at one time for taking celery into matches 😂
