It's got zero to do with football or sport, please sing something else. John Barnes rap is preferable, really.

I like it because it brings back good memories of watching the darts at The Lakeside. However, I don't want to hear it attached to every sporting event.

It's just "Lakeside".

I'm from Frimley 🤪

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 01/08/2022 00:07

I said to my mum today, why do they sing it when it's not about football.

She said because Peter Kay sang it on the treadmill with Ronnie Corbett falling over 😑

Amarillo would actually have been a better song tbh.

Mississipi71 · 01/08/2022 00:09

An irritating song, worsened by Rod Stewart.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/08/2022 00:37

Eh.. it’s a fun song to sing that everyone knows the words to. It’s not my favorite but like the compulsion to mime out the letters when YMCA is played this too I shall involuntarily sing out “BE BE BE DE” whenever I hear it.

Murica · 01/08/2022 00:59

It started at Fenway Park in 1997 and it's been played during the seventh inning stretch at every Boston Red Sox game since. It started as a baseball song. Kinda cool that it's so popular in so many places but I can see why people are getting tired of it.

Have as much fun as possible and sing your hearts out just not with this bloody awful song!

The line ‘good times never seemed so good’ is why they sing it.

It’s pretty obvious really.

This thread is effin’ miserable and most here are unable to display basic listening skills if they can’t see why (even if loosely) this song has been chosen (for the men’s first I should add - did you moan then????)

They have just undertaken a massive achievement, they can sing what they bloody like.

Press mute if you don’t like it.

When you have a nice big win for the whole world to see after years of training and being one of the best in the world at what you do, you can probably sing what you like too. We won’t complain!

BunsyGirl · 01/08/2022 06:55

Well I went to an NBA match and they played it there too. It’s just a sports match song now. I don’t think anyone can claim (apart maybe the Redsocks as they used it first).

Quincythequince · 01/08/2022 06:56

‘I’m forever blowing bubbles’

‘You’ll never walk alone’

’Hey Jude’

’Right here, right now’

’Z cars’

The list goes on. Go educate yourself on football music culture a bit (there is one…)

derxa · 01/08/2022 07:09

Ohhhhhhhh Yessir I can boogie!!!!

Sparklingbrook · 01/08/2022 07:12

How is it ‘miserable’ to not like a song? Especially when there are other actually great songs?

It doesn’t stop what they did being a massive achievement just because you don’t like the theme tune. 🤷‍♀️

It’s miserable to moan about why a song is (very obviously song - any football fan would know) within the context of this historic win.

I’m sure the team don’t care, I don’t care for the song either but if you read many comments they say ‘what’s it got to do with football’

The ignorance is actually a bit 🤯 especially given a quick Google would explain why it’s used.

Moat football songs
are 1) a bit shit and 2) almost nothing explicitly to do with football. And most informed people would know that.

Oops apologies 🤭. Lakeside minus the 'The' 😁

@Igotjelly I'm just asking as I've been a season ticket holder for 35 years and don't recall ever singing this? Only reference being Stevie G saying "don't worry about alfredo he's in the singing room singing sweet Caroline"

It was after the videos of Alfie singing and dancing to it were posted everywhere

xalo · 01/08/2022 07:35

Yes it was adopted first by Boston Red Sox in the nineties so definitely not a soccer song.

xalo · 01/08/2022 07:36

Oops Red Socks!

GroggyLegs · 01/08/2022 07:38

The song itself doesn't matter - it's a joyful act, we sing together to celebrate!

Join in!

MrsDThomas · 01/08/2022 07:40

Yes please stop. I detest any song that’s associated with football esp when it has fuck all to do with it.

and this comes from someone who has been standing on the lune for 16 years with 3 kids, travels 160 each way to watch one of my girls play.

thank god they didn’t sing “champioooones champiooones”like 7 year olds

LakieLady · 01/08/2022 07:42

It gives me the worst ear worm ever. It's worse than my tinnitus.

gogohmm · 01/08/2022 07:43

Apparently they sing it in Germany too. Meant they could have it ready to play whoever won!

gogohmm · 01/08/2022 07:44

Daydream believer with alternative lyrics was sung at Derby

DappledThings · 01/08/2022 07:47

Davros · 31/07/2022 23:12

I'm sure it started at the cricket in 20:20 matches

Yep, football nicked it from cricket. The feckers.

SellFridges · 01/08/2022 07:47

I don’t really like it, but I was at Wembley yesterday and the players make a point of singing it with their families. So that makes it perfectly acceptable. I don’t want to hear it at every ground.

They also like to really like a dance to Ultra Nate which baffles me more, but again, they can do what they damn well like!

Quincythequince · 01/08/2022 07:48

gogohmm · 01/08/2022 07:43

The funniest was the German trolling that was adopting ‘Football’s coming home’ as their anthem!

😂

They still play it in international games too

generalh · 01/08/2022 07:50

I loved the Welsh fans singing "Please don't take me home" during 2016 Euros. We have now moved onto singing Welsh sings but have no clue about the words. I just love listening to all the fans singing "Yma o Hyd" but I don't know the words.

Clawdy · 01/08/2022 07:52

Neil Diamond fan here, so always loved the song, and the line "Good times never seemed so good " is perfect for a celebration!
